Yo guys

Encountered this weird issue trying to sort out PS3 audio output via HDMI.

It seems like the console will output 5.1 MLPCM for music, downloaded videos and games. This occurred after I enabled the equivalent audio format and linear PCM under Sound and BD configuration, respectively.

For the above materials, it is actually outputting 2.0 instead of the full 5.1 and that deters the AVR from applying sound processing such as DPL2 and Neo6.

Yup, am pretty sure I documented this in my one of my earlier posts.

BUT I recall that the Onkyo seems to be aware that only the L/R channels are working even though PS3 outputs a 7.1 MPCM signal. Hope I am not wrong.

It did bug me a lot at that time, but I guess most of my sources are in MPCM/DD so this does not affect me much (only for the odd trailer). I don't use CD and SACD.

Doesn't work for my case unless I disable 5.1 MLPCM. The 875 will identify the source as 5.1/7.1 MPCM 48kHz although only stereo sound is output. Damn...

Up till now I've used an optical output for my PS3 to AVR. When I set audio output to PCM, I get stereo only. When I change it to bitstream (with the warning that some audio signal may be lost) I get 5.1 sound (even 7.1 with my 2nd amp). Comments guys, and what's the explanation?

I'm going to get the Onkyo 875 and changing to HDMI cables. Does that mean the same will happen?

Most probably.

Could be a bug somewhere but at least it works where it matters most in game discs and movie discs.  Probably need to dig through those super long AVS threads to find out the actual cause.

yup. this was the problem i was facing before my PS3 drive failed. i get 7.1 signal source on my Denon AVR thru HDMI when i was just playing 2chn audio CD. now using optical instead so as not to mixed up. the thing i dun like is PS3 can only use 1 dedicate output at only 1 time. each time video n audio is changed gotta reconfigure the settings. wah piang!!! ???

Yup.. I'm back on optical too and will be manually switching over to HDMI for SACD and BD playback. Sucks.

they dont want support for SACD but blue ray. Honestly they are selling this 40G version as cheap blue ray player.  ;)

How about video upscaling?

My Marantz also handles the "7.1LPCM" output (ie playing MP3s, CDs etc) to my receiver as 2.0. Not sure if it can do it 2.1 as i use pure direct mode for listening to CDs anyway.

Why don't you try activating DPL2 for starters. I think the AVR will not allow this because it's assuming the input signal was already multichannel.

My concern is why can't the PS3 output the native audio format of the materials. 2.0 for CD, MP3 and AVC movies instead of throwing everything out as MLPCM.

still support video upscaling. The only different from 80G version will be cant play SACD, 2 USB ports only and cant play games from other PS models.

I thought of that at first as weird at first but as it was still a 2.0 sound i was getting i did not explore further. But thanks for pointing that out i will try to apply some post proc and see if can work :p
