I don't remember REL Acoustics having a Sunfire model. perhaps you've gotten it mixed up. If it is an REL, I can help you as I have owned 4 REL subwoofers in the past and have decades of experience in sub bass tuning the REL way. Cheers, Bose Is The Best!!!

boseguru Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 did you check your cone? as you mentioned, your kid turned both knobs. he might have turned the volume knob all the way up without you knowing it and something must have given in when you played it some day. Could you please trouble shoot some possibilities.
Guest francis woo Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Wen, try these - 1. Crossover frequency at 9 o'clock 2. Phase control at 9 o'clock 3. Flat-Video contour switch at 'flat' position. Good luck.

Jason Yeo Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 sorry not REL .. got it mixed.. its sunfire.. btw the sound is always very wobbly.. like farting like that.. no matter how i try to tweak it Wen , set the flat/video to video . If remember correctly ,Flat means tune at 16hz , video is 20hz . For sunfire , it is bit dangerous to set at flat . Crossover set at higher freq(higher than your receiver/prepro crossover freq so check yoour receiver/prepro) . Phase control cannot comment . Need to do time alignment/in phase with the speakers . The speakers distance settings at receiver also can affect it . If you do not have any equipment and software , what you can do is ...... Set receiver at crossover freq at 80hz. Sub amp crossover around 90 to 100hz. Play some CD with 70 to 100hz bass . Adjust the phase control so that you can listen and feel the best and loudest bass . (Note: If your sunfire sub has auto EQ, do it now) For level , use SPL meter , play AVIA/DVE test tones so that the sub and speakers level is the same . You can tune the sub level higher a bit (3db hotter) if you like .
boseguru Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 What's yr volume level like??? Sorry that question was mean for Wen.
Guest francis woo Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Sorry to contradict you Jason bro. The instruction manuel says the 'Flat' position is the recommended setting for audio and video playback because it extends the frequency to 18 HZ. I am currently using the Sunfire signature.
wen1624705757 Posted October 16, 2007 Author Posted October 16, 2007 What's yr volume level like??? even i set it to min, and when some heavy bass kicks in.. then it farts.. so i turn it slightly higher, and at same scene it farts harder... jialat man.... OK francis & jason.. i will try to suggestion given.. hope its not faulty.. that damn thing is sooo heavy
Jason Yeo Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Sorry to contradict you Jason bro. The instruction manuel says the 'Flat' position is the recommended setting for audio and video playback because it extends the frequency to 18 HZ. I am currently using the Sunfire signature. Hi Francis , I do have a sunfire true signature before . I run a test on flat and video and found out when you set to flat extend to 18hz , sunfire create distortion below 20hz and >20hz got less headroom . As such , ppl will tend to increase the volumn level on the sunfire since 90% of the movies has better upper 30hz frequency . However , once you watch some movies which has deep and power bass , the sunfire will be in danger to bottom out or worst still, damage the driver . For video , although it do not extend to deeper freq , the above 20hz is more powerful and start to roll off after 20hz . This tuning is more safe to protect your sunfire . For below 20hz , we need higher db to get the relevant feel so even you extend to 18hz on sunfire and calibrate properly , I bet you feel nothing more but on the other hand , endanger the driver . I always suggest to freinds not to risk their sub unnecessary unless your driver is good enough and set extend below 20hz has real good feel .
Jason Yeo Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 even i set it to min, and when some heavy bass kicks in.. then it farts.. so i turn it slightly higher, and at same scene it farts harder... jialat man.... OK francis & jason.. i will try to suggestion given.. hope its not faulty.. that damn thing is sooo heavy If the driver got fart sound , bro , your driver need ambulance liao . Today when you go back , try using 2 big thumbs , each at one side of A DRIVER , slowly press it in and out . If got "gi gi" sound, confirm your drver is gone. If no , maybe your receiver side has set the sub level too high so even at minimum for sunfire side level , it still bottom at certain heavy bass scenes. Pls double check again .
Guest francis woo Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Jason bro, tks yr comments. I am not tech savvy so have to rely on manuals. I will try out the video position and see how it goes........ :)
