petetherock Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 I am currently format neutral.... I have no Hi Def player.....! I sold my XA2 and am sitting by the sidelines to see how things evolve. My current options: Get a Toshiba A35 - ABT chip - No SHARC DAcs - SD DVD upscaling seems poorer than the XA2 PS3 - no analogue out 5.1 - cheap and cheerful - super VFM Samsung BD UP5000 - possible option - ?music quality - DACS?? - REON chip - 7.1 analogue out Please chip in on options available..... Thanks
petetherock Posted October 15, 2007 Author Posted October 15, 2007 BTW how many bros are still without a hi def player? Or are format neutral?
cn9601 Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 BTW how many bros are still without a hi def player? Or are format neutral? So Pete, u doing a Poll again ??? If I could consider my 1930 1080p upscaler player a HD player, then I hope to be in your elite group of HD owner :P For me, it is not so much as format neutral, rather it boils down to the software. I am in a dilemma bcos not all movies are released in both formats (for obvious reason of cost). Somehow, in Spore it gives me the impression that we are quite pro-BD, maybe bcos of PS3 (???). Pio BDP-LX70A is ard S$2,600 :'( More X than my onky ::)
petetherock Posted October 15, 2007 Author Posted October 15, 2007 No poll, just examining my options, and now that I have sold my XA2, I get floods of pms from previous bros who wanted it, should have actioned it off... Anyway, I am watching the scene for developments. If the Pioneer was dual format and region free, I am not fussed about the price. All my Pioneer products over the years have done well
Knight_Rider Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Me. Still on WS CRT. ;D Option to buy a PS3 like you or get a buffalo combo drive for the bedroom. Will upgrade the living room htpc ,avr and tv when it's more settled.
cn9601 Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 If the Pioneer was dual format and region free, I am not fussed about the price. Oh-ya...forgot to mention that Pio BDP-LX70A is SD-DVD Region-Code Free. But not dual-format :'( Got tis info at Pio Showroom@Adephi. Oso had a brief 7mins audition of the Pio 5.1EX series - yes tat $30,000+++ Greek pillar stuffs
naglfar Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 I am currently still format neutral - but have more or less decided to get the 40GB PS3 once it is out....
htfreak Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 How about the LG Dual format player. LG Singapore is going to launch the first gen version in the next one month according to the LG sales person at the HD5 Launch event. Me also no HD player in my study room. ;D Need to rectify that situation ASAP.
insomia Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 waiting to see who end up winning in the end... and prices of the player to be lower than now..... and too many things to upgrade.. so slowly slowly..
Doggie Howser Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 waiting to see who end up winning in the end... and prices of the player to be lower than now..... and too many things to upgrade.. so slowly slowly.. I guess I have repeated this point ad nauseum, but if you are going to continue building up yr media library with ORIGINAL titles ANYWAY, the longer you wait, the more you would have to pay to rebuild yr library with HD equivalents. :) IMHO 24-35 bucks for R3 DVDs (often badly encoded, and worse, with Dolby STEREO!!!) vs 30+-40+ bucks for an imported HD or BR disc is a no brainer. If you already have a HD display setup, and I know most people here do, you will see huge differences (lack of macroblocking, better shadow details, better fast motion, and often with superior sound).
insomia Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 currently i am doing selective buying of R3 or R1 disc.. probably only 1dvd a month depending on the release as i stop going to watch movies at the cinema for awhile now... and of course, they are many alternative than buying DVD right now... :) so at the end of the day, either i get a dual format format player or i will wait and see who wins... (if there is a winner) dont like to be restricted to only 1 format and can only drool at release from the other.. if you know what i mean.. cheers
insomia Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 oh.. and to add further... i dont have a HD setup... basically i need to change everything and start from scratch = $$$$ so right now, family come first right now..

Sorrie, bro DH. I think our prob is format. And it is format that is holding most of us back for not being decisive to dive into HD ::) My impression of dual-format player is not completely dual-format, such that it can still pretty be pro-HD or pro-BD, depending on the player maker :-\
kzone Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Dont quite understand the problem with format.. with the 40g PS3, it'll cost u about 1k to get both HD & BD players.. & if one of them loose, u still have the software & player to play the loosing format...
xfi Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 currently i am doing selective buying of R3 or R1 disc.. probably only 1dvd a month depending on the release as i stop going to watch movies at the cinema for awhile now... and of course, they are many alternative than buying DVD right now... :) I'm even more selective. I've stopped buying new DVDs now. Only resale DVDs and if I like it then perhaps get the BD. I've set my standard as HD cos the PQ n SQ is so much better. Totally agree. I've given up on dvds. In fact I think the HD has bridged the PQ gap btw LCD and plasma, seriously I think one looks as good as the other when on HD. Tell me i'm wrong...but that's what I see.
1AngMoh Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 BTW how many bros are still without a hi def player? Or are format neutral? Yep, i'm still without a HD player. I have some concerns on the longevity of the HD formats and adopting a wait and see approach. I’m not sure that either BR or HD-DVD will replace SD-DVD by scaling to mass market status. I hope i'm wrong. For now my Marantz DV9600 does a great job upscaling SD to 1080 for my plasma. There is no doubt in my mind that HD affords a better PQ but the present premium one has to pay for this incremental difference is too great at this time.
petetherock Posted October 16, 2007 Author Posted October 16, 2007 I have two factions pulling me apart, a - wait for the new duo players with analogue out, or simply get 2 players b - wait for the format war a little longer As doggie said though, the influx of new movies makes it tempting, but on the other hand, the startup cost is also daunting. I am a cheapo, and paying $40-50 a pop can be quite painful. I have been selling some of my older discs in anticipation of a shift to HD. Even as I speak, another package of new HD DVDs arrived and I have nothing to view them with. But to replace my large number of discs, would cost me enough $$ to get a small car... So I might lie low, and see how the world shapes up first... Anyone want to start a HD DVD exchange club? http://www.xtremeplace.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=48641.0
Knight_Rider Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 So I might lie low, and see how the world shapes up first... Anyone want to start a HD DVD exchange club? I even more cheapo all my DVDs are rental. :P But hey it's a good idea for a cd/dvd/hd wadever exchange club. ;D
DanDon Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 I dun have HD player and display. Still waiting for the price to slide. Me too! Majority DVDs are rental. Agreed it's a good idea to have a "Disc X-change Club". I even more cheapo all my DVDs are rental. :P But hey it's a good idea for a cd/dvd/hd wadever exchange club. ;D
Pingu1624705792 Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 I am currently still format neutral - but have more or less decided to get the 40GB PS3 once it is out.... Ditto :)
dethangel Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 Still neutral format. Still using WS HD CRT. Am waiting for the wars to stabilize. Everything seems a chaos now. Deciding how much my RXV-2200 is still worth now ::) Probably let this go and see how my options are since DD-HD DTS-HD processors/amps are starting to emerge. No plans to go HDMI yet either. Most of my collections are in DVD format.
xfi Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 Those who are format neutral should have a look at this to see where the wind is blowing...even when Amazon's recent offer is considered. http://charts.highdefdigest.com/rank.aspx
petetherock Posted December 7, 2007 Author Posted December 7, 2007 For those waiting to jump in, its not really imperative to acrue a huge pile of discs in anticipation of your new player. Prices will come down and when you decide which format to get, or both, disc prices may have dropped further. Its not like watches, or property, technology tends to decrease in price ;)
petetherock Posted December 17, 2007 Author Posted December 17, 2007 For those waiting, actually with the X Mas sales in USA, it is a pretty decent time to grab a Toshiba, or even a Panny BD30, then you can be format neutral. For those who sold off their XA2, no worries, it is being discontinued, i.e. replacements will arrive.
