monstertruck Posted October 4, 2007 Posted October 4, 2007 harlow everybody, need y'all help again. did a search everywhere, but couldn't find a satisfactory answer to my problem. i had just changed to a NAD C350 amp and when i turn on the amp or switching it off, there's a slightly audible 'pop' sound in both my speakers. i tried to change the cables, plug in an out of the input, and switch on and off a few more times to test and turn on and off the tone defeat and soft clipping, but the 'pop' sound still remains. it's not irritating and does not affect the sound quality, but it's a concern. a friend told me that the amp might have a leakage *gasps in horror* and hence there's a pop sound in the speakers heard. Please enlighten me. is this a serious problem in the short and long run? will it spoil any of the components? what can i do about it (or nothing about it)? is it a natural phenomenon? i don't have this soft 'pop' sound with my previous nad amp leh.
dbchoong Posted October 4, 2007 Posted October 4, 2007 Too much pop music? Just kidding. The "pop" is a pretty normal thing that happens to some amps especially older or lower models. It happens to my cheap Akira HTIB but not on my other amps. If I'm not wrong, it happens when a capacitor discharges when powering off. But many amps these days have eliminated this phenomenon with some simple electronic circuitry that blocks out the signal created by the discharge from the amp when you power off. I think you need not worry about the pop as it should not damage anything. :)

SiriuslyCold Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 ... occasionally interrupted by a soft "pop" ;D
monstertruck Posted October 5, 2007 Author Posted October 5, 2007 ... occasionally interrupted by a soft "pop" ;D yoz dude! u also have a similar experience? care to explain more? do you still experience it nowadays?
kzone Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 what can i do about it (or nothing about it)? U can leave the amp on 24/7...
monstertruck Posted October 5, 2007 Author Posted October 5, 2007 U can leave the amp on 24/7... seriously ar? the amp won't spoil? and if there's a power breakdown, will it affect the amp? but like what dbchoong said, if there's no significant problem with the 'pop' sound in the long run, i can live with it then.
kzone Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 won't ah... many of us here leaving it on also.. not very environmental friendly though
SiriuslyCold Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 no problem here. only sometimes but not regularly. but like almost everyone my amps are either on or on standby
kelso1624705851 Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 What you can do is when powering on turn on the amp first followed by the pre then the source, powering off the reverse turn down vol then turn off the source, pre then power amp.
monstertruck Posted October 5, 2007 Author Posted October 5, 2007 thanks for all the helpful advice... really really appreciate it. to sort of compound matters, i do not know what's softstart. but my amp can be on standby mode. in fact i like to turn my amp to standby mode for convenience sake (and hence the decision to get the C570 which has this function), but when i turn it on from standby mode, the 'pop' sound still happens. my previous amp, C520, has to be on and off manually and no standby mode, and there's no absolutely no issue with the 'pop' sound. i do not own a pre-amp as i just want a simple setup. the nad components (just a cdp and an integrated amp) work really well for me.
Mr. Big Posted October 6, 2007 Posted October 6, 2007 If power cord comes with 2-pin plug, try reversing it (Live and Neutral)
monstertruck Posted October 6, 2007 Author Posted October 6, 2007 If power cord comes with 2-pin plug, try reversing it (Live and Neutral) haha, thanks, but the problem still persists. i once thought of this possibility, and tried out your recommendation, but suck thumb, nothing's changed for the better. thanks anyway!!
bolts1624705732 Posted October 7, 2007 Posted October 7, 2007 pop sound sometimes caused by rush of current when the amp is on. A soft start circuit limits this current rush and gradually brings the amp up to full power. No pop sound.

A soft start circuit limits this current rush and gradually brings the amp up to full power. No pop sound. harlow bolts! care to explain more to me as i know nuts (pun unintended) about soft start circuit? what's that actually? need to open up the amp right? *pardon me for my ignorance. i had checked the net and saw tons of engineering diagrams in which i know nuts sia...*
bolts1624705732 Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 Send you a pm already. Talk to James. He may be able to wire up one for you if your amp really don't have one.
