Guest wcseow Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 Was looking to replace my bedroom Panasonic 32 LCD TV with a 40-42 range. Was at Courts for a quick look and got recommend for a Samsung 40M8 (at $4400, 200 extra for built in HD tuner) and a Sharp Aquos P7 (42") at $3999 I kind of like the Samsung but was intriqque with Sharp low pricing. Any comment?
dmateo Posted September 21, 2007 Posted September 21, 2007 gaincity in marina square is selling this at 4119. you might even be able to bargain that down a again.
louco73 Posted September 22, 2007 Posted September 22, 2007 I'm going to say something that many people will probably disagree with, but anyway.... At 40-42 inch, do you REALLY need a full HD screen? How far do you sit back from it? Can you REALLY tell the difference between 1080i/p and 720p? It's difficult enough to notice the difference between SCV 720p and 1080i on my 100" projector screen, so I can't imagine there being much difference at all at 40-42 inch. There is a difference at 100", but it's really quite small in comparison to SD to 720p. My humble opinion :).

Sometimes downconverting native 1080p sources to 720p, you can create rescaling artefacts. Noticed this when outputting King Kong HD DVD to 720p screen.
Guest wcseow Posted September 22, 2007 Posted September 22, 2007 Hi Thanks. I went to a neighbourhood store and they quote 4080 for the Samsung M8. A further $300 wsa offered to take the "free" 19" LCD thus total cost is $3700. !! But then I wsa surprised he told me that the Sharp P7 cannot be $3999. His pricing is nowhere near there// Mmmmmmmm
HT102 Posted September 22, 2007 Posted September 22, 2007 But then I wsa surprised he told me that the Sharp P7 cannot be $3999. His pricing is nowhere near there// I just picked up the Sharp brochures from Junction8 BD. There is a promotion (till 30th Sep'07) of $4399 for the Sharp LC-42P7M with $300 of NTUC or Takashimaya vouchers. $3999 is absolutely credible. Note that these Sharp LCDs are not capable of accepting 1080p24Hz input from hi-def players to get judder-free video playback..
Guest wcseow Posted September 22, 2007 Posted September 22, 2007 Gee thanks.. I gather the samsung M8 does not too, right? HT102 Posted September 22, 2007 Posted September 22, 2007 Gee thanks.. I gather the samsung M8 does not too, right? So far those local sets I know don't, including the one Pete reviewed. However according to UK AVForums, it is a firmware thingy, i.e. some panels have the updated firmware to support 1080p24Hz input. Ref: http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=546639
dmateo Posted September 22, 2007 Posted September 22, 2007 I believe Pete review mentioned they can. But you need to upgrade the firmware.
Guest wcseow Posted September 30, 2007 Posted September 30, 2007 Hi After some advice and reading, tell my wife ok full HD LCD wait till next year to replace 46" living room model. So now change to simply replacing my 32" with a larger screen. So I thoughy it is easier now as 1080i support would be easier to decde..WRONG!.. so eventually down to the following a. Sony Bravia 40V300 - $2980 b. Samsung 40R8 - $2700 c. Samsung 37R8 - $1800 (after trade in) Was decided on 37R81 and about to order then wife side "Are u sure big enough cause I do not want to replace it again next year",,,,,mmm do a double take and now asking for Toshiba 42A3000 cause I heard it is cheap (and good)......... thanks

But 1 thing to take note, it's not going to kill you if it's not full HD 1080p, what's more important shall be the content, not the resolutions. I noticed a lot of so called "hardcore" people just cheong blindly. Maybe they just feel shoik when they can finally hit the highest specs, and then feel regretted for the rest of their life :D dun over buy lah, 720p panel is more than enough for the current programming.....

Buy what you can afford lah... is not over buying! If you have budget for the premium stuff, go for it... enjoy first. We need rich people to spent and keeps the economy going. ;D Hardcore people will not cheong blindly, they support. We respect.

Quest88 Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 imbest, not sure what u are contesting. hmm. 720p display can only display 720p right? if its 1080p then the display will downscale automatically? ??? of course if comparing 1080p source downscaled vs 480p source upscaled, the 1080p is the winner. but we are talking about displays here right? anyway, no need full HD for 40 inch if its around 2m away from you. i currently own a 1366x768 n the pixels are already almost too small for me to make out from that distance. there is a chart on this which u probably can view..
