Thinking of getting a Full-HD Plasma/LCD

I have not been here for awhile .....and have lost touch with the developments in xtremeplace.

Anyway, I'm considering replacing my 42" Panny (2nd/3rd Gen) plasma which I bought in 2003.

Dunno how much it's worth if I were to sell.... ;D

Anyway, am considering getting a full HD (not HD-Ready, hor.) plasma/lcd and not too sure what are the better brands/model to look for.

I was eyeing the Sharp Aquos and the Samsungs but I need actual 'on-the-ground' feedback from

owners rather than from the sales blokes at Denki/HN/Courts.

Any advice, suggestions appreciated. Thank you.

LED backlight offers better whites and lower power consumption, but otherwise not really a big deal for big screens.

For me, the crucial features to look for are:

Full HD

response time

HDMI 1.3 (if lipsynch mode is supported, Deep Color may be nice if I have a new Deep Color compatible camcorder)

4ms response time

1080p24 support

I can live without Bravia processing cos you can get better processors in AV receivers, HDDVD/BR/DVD players or even standalone ones.

Saw a Sony 42" with these specs (except for HDMI 1.3 I think) for US$1.9k. Tamade. Damn cheap!!

you want big screen, then get a projector lah, anything less than 60" is not going to be shoik at all! :D I'm on 70"-104" most of the time.

threadstarter did not say anything about 'large screen'.

By the end of the year, we will have a lot more full-HD plasma coming in from the Japanese.

Phil

Sorry OT alittle..

Phil, does the new Sharp A83 full-HD LCD support HDMI lip-sync and CEC?

I think its the best to wait till next year because lots of new modles are coming in every month and there is no stability in Full-HD department yet. I am also waiting to buy a full HD TV and currently i just bought one cheap LCD TV for temporary.

Wait! don't buy now of you don't have to.

If you buy LCD you have to wait to 120Hz displays

NO!!!! wait for LED backlight LCD!!!!!

I, for one, was being serious....

120Hz were presented as this year CEDIA, they will come and your LCDs will look bad on moving pictures.

The reason for waiting for 120Hz LCD displays is that now the problem of perceived judder on LCD is not due to the response time but to the image display time, which on LCDs is the same as the refresh rate; that's probably why the manufacturers are currently all proudly displaying their response times...

Now I will not translate to english the post I made in French somedays ago, I am sure google will help you.

The 100Hz/120hz jargons are confusing and possibly misleading.

I just went thru the local ad literature from Sony, Phillips and Sharp on their implementation of "motion-flow", "100Hz clear", "Fine motion advanced" respectively.. Sony and Phillips mentioned doubling the frame-rate to 100Hz from 50Hz, but only Sharp indicated that doubling 60Hz to 120hz.

So does that mean Sharp's implementation will also work on NTSC (catering to most of our DVDs, Blu-Rays and HD DVDs) format, which is 60Hz while the other 2 brands only support PAL inputs?  ???

Samsung also has a similar technology

MoviePlus or something. Suggests it can smooth up 24 25 and 30fps sources.

Oh no.. more confusion.  :(

Read the specs of new Samsung LA46N81B. It has the "Movie Plus" feature but a No to "LCD 100Hz". The existence of the field item "LCD 100Hz" should pave the way for a new model with this feature in the near future.

100 or 120  will depend on the input signal's frequency.

So,

If that realy the case the perhaps Pioneer and Panasonic shouldn't make a Full HD model since they are all the same in picture sharpness and quality. I guess there is more than meet the eye.

For a 42/46 inch with sitting position of a few meter (probaby 3-4 meter) it seems to be almost impossible to discern the difference on picture quality. But this does not necessarily holds true if you were seated closer or when the display set are bigger ( > 60 inches).

So I guess the bottom line is that, all the factor has to come down in place for the value to be brought out for this Full HD / HD Ready debate.

I also will not jump to conclusion to fast on test conducted by certain vendor as they are tend to be tuned in favour of their respective products.
