SEEL Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 Hi, I just got the Denon 3808, together with Anthony Gallo A'Divas 5.1. I managed to hook it all up and I think it seems to be working ok except that I find the dialog volume very soft but the explosives scenes are very loud. I'm currently running it around -20. I think the volume scale runs from 0 to -70 - should I be expecting very clear dialogs around -20? I thought I heard louder volumes at the showroom. I did run the sound tests through the Audessey and it keeps repeating itself for multiple positions(?) - I terminated it around the third time it asks for a sound test. Have I done anything wrong? Another thing peculiar I find is that the opening sequences on the DVD seems to run at a 4:3 format - I use to get it stretched to full screen (16:9) before. Anyway I can fix this? Appreciate if anyone can advise on this. Many thanks
dmateo Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 i suppose you are running auto calibration. If so and it stoped before completely finished running the whole test, check the log. There should be some error in the test that cause it to stop. This happens to me when I ran YPAO (yamaha auto calibration) on my system Also make sure that you securetly fasten all speaker cable, and when in doubt redo it to get it working. My test was reporting inverted cable once, only to find out later on that it's actually loose and was not connecting well. Have fun!
SEEL Posted September 16, 2007 Author Posted September 16, 2007 Thanks dmateo! Do you have any idea on the strange black bars on the left and right of the screen? It happens to some films (eg Hunt for the Red October). Any idea on how i can get rid of it? Thanks.

Many thanks Hello, i did not even touch audessey at all. i use manual all the way. i think your channel level are very low. goin to -20 is abit crazy. you shouh up your channel levels to +12 than control using the master vol. in this way you don't have to go to that far. for me in pcm track usually, i go around -40, it is very very lound for me. i thing you have on your upscalling. there is a option in the input settings, to turn the upscalling off. Thanks
freebird2003 Posted September 17, 2007 Posted September 17, 2007 you might want to add your comments to this thread. http://www.xtremeplace.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=47726.0 Thanks alot
SEEL Posted September 17, 2007 Author Posted September 17, 2007 Many thanks FreeBird. On the black bars issue (on 4 sides), strangely, this somehow disappears when I reduce both the DVD output and upscale resolution to 480p/576p. The downside is that the Hunt of the Red October DVD (HOTRO) picture becomes very grainy. I understand its a very old film and i recall it has never looked good on TV. Unfortunately I love this film. Is there anyway I can get a better picture? Will I have to adjust my resolution on different DVDs. I played some other DVDs on 1080i upscale resolution and they worked fine before. Very puzzling............ On the master volume, do i have to adjust it manually per channel or is there a master volume adjustment?

Very puzzling............ On the master volume, do i have to adjust it manually per channel or is there a master volume adjustment? Under Manual Setup > Channel Level Use Manual Mode and don't press start yet (it will be very very loud). Go to default . now all ch. will be 0db level. Reduce the master vol. on your remote to something like -80. now adjust each to +10 - +12. once all set press return and never go back to this menu again. Why ?? i am not sure this is a bug or the standard feature. for my case if i set all ch to +12 and return and go back to start again, the master volume becomes something like +12 level (Which is dam lound and can damage ur speakers). So unless you want to change the ch. level you must start from default. i hope this helps. i am not sure abt ur dvd player. may be it might be due to the nature of the particular dvd or the dvd's acpect ratio. Thanks.
SEEL Posted September 19, 2007 Author Posted September 19, 2007 Thanks. BTW, what are your favourite simulation settings on the Denon 3808?

In order to get the best out of your investment, U should run thru' the entire auto-calibration setup. Before U start your cal, make sure U find yourself a tripod to mount the mic, adjust the tripod height so that the mic is at your ear level when U r seated. Predetermined all the auto cal. positions before hand & move the tripod to these positions thru' the cal. & be patient & let the AVR finish the entire cal. Lastly try to do the cal. with no or min. ambient sounds as noise may influence the results. You should find a great improvement after that if the cal. was properly done. ;)
SEEL Posted September 19, 2007 Author Posted September 19, 2007 Hi, I was expecting that the calibration should be done for only 1 position. Do I have to run through all 8 positions? Where else should I be placing the Audessy mike?

Where else should I be placing the Audessy mike? Yes U will need to run thru' all positions. Centre is definitely the first position. As for the rest, just space them out along your sofa & another row just infront of your sofa. Go thru' your manual to get a better picture.
