MuttonFlanks Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 Need some expert help here... I have a chance to pick up one of these TVs at an amazing price. Would they work here in Singapore? Shipping is not an issue so I won't have to worry about that. I'm just not very familiar with the technology and standards for TVs so I would appreciate any help. Thanks ;D LC46D64U: http://www.sharpusa.com/products/QuickPrint/0,1242,1921,00.html LC52D64U: http://www.sharpusa.com/products/QuickPrint/0,1242,1920,00.html
petetherock Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 Mate, Go through this thread and see if you still want to go through the trouble. http://www.xtremeplace.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=46563.15 Good luck
MuttonFlanks Posted September 11, 2007 Author Posted September 11, 2007 Thanks pete, I've already weighed all those options, but: #1 - I don't have to worry about shipping. #2 - The price I can get the TV at I wouldn't really care if it just broke one day for no reason at all. #3 - I already have a transformer. All I want to know is if the TV will work with the local channels and starhub STB.
petetherock Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 ATSC tuners and NTSC tuners do not work with local TV. P
FookLai Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 If I am not wrong, you can use the tuner inside VCR or DVR and output with NTSC format using composite/component/HDMI to the TV. Fook Lai
MuttonFlanks Posted September 11, 2007 Author Posted September 11, 2007 Ahhh... right now I have the StarHub DVR connected through component to my Hitachi plasma. So this would work with a NTSC TV?
FookLai Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 Ah ok. So there's no simple way to get my StarHub DVR box to work with this TV? :'( Check the StarHub DVR see if there is NTSC format output? If it has, then maybe is workable. Fook Lai

FookLai Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 hmm ok, will check when i get home... thanks! Hi Muttons, you might want to read Pete thread on exporting tv: http://www.xtremeplace.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=47828.0 I was saying about the VCR/DVR method cause I saw this guy having success to use a imported tv but me myself never try, I think you have to get double confirm before proceed: http://www.xtremeplace.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=46856.0
imbest Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 if i'm not wrong, hubstation is sending PAL signal, but i thought most TV can resolve both PAL and NTSC. TS, you got lobang to ship them over? share share leh.
tsammyc Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 Might not matter with HDMI, if its just a digital signal...
htfreak Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 It may still be a problem if the TV can only accept 1080i signal in 60hz only. Starhub sends their signal out from the set-top box at 1080i50hz. This was what happened to those early bird US Xbox360 buyers who took up the Samsung CRT offer that provided 1080i support only to find out that that TV only supported 50hz. Hence, other than resolution support, ensure that the correct hertz cycle is supported.
imbest Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 it's quite troublesome, unless you have a universal box to take in any zapalang input and output to the local standards. maybe we need to come out a DIY way to get the universal box done hehe...
technobagus Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 The lack of PAL tuner is not a problem. Heh heh, I have a Gefen HTS which takes HDMI/Component in almost any format (PAL/NTSC) and outputs to 1080p60 (NTSC). This means that in theory, one can use any PAL device with a NTSC LCD TV, be it a mioTV or Hubstation stb. I am sure that with an appropriate AV receiver (Onkyo 875???) or scaler, the imported LCD TV will work flawlessly with almost all inputs....
MuttonFlanks Posted September 12, 2007 Author Posted September 12, 2007 Hmm... I don't have much time to decide now lol I checked my Starhub DVR and it is in PAL with no option for me to change to NTSC. So if I get a decent receiver I should be able to make this work? Umm the reason I don't have to worry about shipping is because my from the US owns a shipping company so he will take care of it for me :)
technobagus Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 I dont see why not? If my el cheapo Gefen Scaler (from/to NTSC/PAL) can do the trick, why not a more expensive AV receiver like the Onkyo 875. But do check the specs of the receiver first. I dont have that receiver so I can't vouch for its conversion capabilities. If you check out the 875 manual, http://www.intl.onkyo.com/downloads/manuals/pdf/tx-sr875_805_manual_e.pdf it does seem to suggest that you can configure it for NTSC output although whether it will convert PAL input signals to NTSC output is another issue altogether......
Quest88 Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 buy and try out! if doesn't work, sell to me to use as a monitor. :P

I was at my parents' house yesterday, my old 34" Trinitron is so nice while watching the Channel U 娱乐百分百....it has very bad resolution so it looks pretty awful on my P9 :(
technobagus Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 heh heh, the Gefen HTS has been superseded by my Philips 46/9532 so it is sitting in the storeroom. The SD upscaling of my current TV is superb so I have no intention of getting the HTS to do the job. However, I am sending the HTS back to the US for firmware upgrading so mebbe I might test it after it is back. The Gefen is however too expensive (700+) for what it was capable of doing when I bought it.
imbest Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 I almost bought 1 from ebay, for just about USD160. when are you sending it back? mind loaning me a few days to see if it's worth the trouble to upscale all the SD channels from SCV? Philips 46/9532? the LCD TV right? Is it better than any decent Plasma? is the internal scaler better than the Gefen?
Knight_Rider Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 Ahhh... right now I have the StarHub DVR connected through component to my Hitachi plasma. So this would work with a NTSC TV? Now TV box all use RCA and HDMI so should be no issue with NTSC/PAL. Power is also 110-240V so no need to worry.

Unfortunately, it is not the connectivity that makes the difference. It is whether the TV will support 60hz video which is one of the main distinguishing feature of NTSC.

I cant comment on Plasmas coz I have never really bothered with plasma screens. The pixelated displays that I have seen on them thus far tend to put me off. But the Phillips certainly looks better than my Toshiba 37WL68E or the Amoi 42inch FullHD screen that I had.
imbest Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 pixalated display? in what sense? i thought LCD is worse?
