freebird2003 Posted September 7, 2007 Posted September 7, 2007 Hello, Like the onkyo thread, i would like to start this thread to discuss information on the new denons. Please share your information, experience or even tips how to tweak settings. I just got my 3808 few days back. it powerfull. i don't really need upscalling. i just stayed away from onkyo cause of pop issues and over heating. i like denon alot and i know that i will not be disapointed. the remote also works for me. the gui is simple. actually i did not read the manual cause i have studied abt 3 weeks before i buy. i knew kinda what i was expecting. to tell the truth i did not use audssey. i use manual setup all the way. the web interface is not very good. when you have set the setings in amp and got to web interface, the settings get messed up and i don't like the web interface. you cannot control all the setting as the main gui. so i suggest just stick with the gui. Another problem, i got was all my speaker's wire was banana plug. At first i was not able to insert into the speakers connectors. i use a screw or pin to remove the black plastic before i could insert the banana plug. i do not have may inputs. dvd player, ps3 and htpc. my htpc and ps3 are connect via hdmi to the 3808 and only my pioneer dvd player's component cable is connect direct to my plasma. only dvd'd optcial audio goes to 3808. Thanks Please share your information, experience or even tips how to tweak settings.
htfreak Posted September 7, 2007 Posted September 7, 2007 Maybe you can help to answer one fundamental question about the Denon's. Do you face the popping sound issue when connected to a PS3 player and playing back BD's. I'm on the lookout for a second AV receiver for my room and the Denon's shorter depth meets one of my criteria.

freebird2003 Posted September 7, 2007 Author Posted September 7, 2007 There some bugs mentions @ avs. There is the list: BUGS - things that are broken or just plain incorrect. Examples that have come up so far would include: GREY / BLACK SCREEN - Internet Radio function. May happen when changing stations, or just sitting there playing for a while. The screen which was previously displaying info about the current song, etc, just goes grey or black, and stays that way. It will blank normally when playing internet radio, then periodically show information, and pressing the left arrow should unblank it. When the bug happens, it will not unblank. It may be grey or black. Switching to another input such as TV/Charlie BravoL works fine, but when switching back to the NET/USB, it remains grey or black. UPDATE: other inputs are affected in a different way - when adjusting the volume, it no longer displays on the screen until this is cleared by the power cycle. Frequency: intermittant Impact: mostly annoying Fix / Workaround: Power cycle the AVR (small power button) MUTE BUG - this is consistant. When the menu is being displayed, pressing MUTE will blank the screen for a few seconds, the input signal channel indicators on the lower left of the display blank, along with some other display indicators (3808 manual page 4 #2). This sequence of events is similar to the results when changing inputs. Some have reported that the menu could not be redisplayed at this point. A related issue has been seen - when pressing mute, the screen normally displays "Muting : ON" for the duration of the mute. This may on occasion display only for a fraction of a second, then dissappear. This may be related to the above bug. Edit 8/27 Yesterday, the "Muting: ON" message only displayed for a few seconds and went away. This should be the normal operation for this message, it should tell you for a few seconds, then get out of the way. The fact that it did it this time indicates that this probably is the intended normal operation, but it has been doing it wrong all of the other times. Frequency: consistant Impact: very annoying Fix / Workaround: none NETWORK INFO BUG - In Manual Setup / Network Setup / Network Information the information is incorrectly displayed, the columns do not match up. The information is correct, but mislabled. Display shows IP on mac address 192.168.15.106 dhcp 0005dcxxxxxx It should say IP 192.168.15.106 mac address 0005dcxxxxxx dhcp on The issue here is that these are switched around. IP is not "on", IP is "192.168.15.106". DHCP is not "0005dcxxxxxx", DHCP is "on" MAC address is not "192.168.15.106", MAC address is "0005dcxxxxx" Frequency: consistant Impact: this can be very confusing to a network novice trying to configure the network settings Fix/Workaround: none MAC ROUTER CONNECTIVITY - Maybe a bug, or just compatibilty issues, will not connect to wireless. Linksys is not a problem Frequency: consistant Impact: High for these users with MAC routers Fix/Workaround: add a piggy-backed Linksys or other non-MAC router HDMI scaler resets If you change any of the HDMI Setup i/p scaler options and then you run Audyssey, all the i/p scaler options are reverted to their defaults Frequency: consistant Impact: annoying Fix/Workaround: TBD AUDYSSEY does not support 6.1 configuration The Audyssey setup does not support a 6.1 speaker configuration. Denon has acknowledged that this is a bug - see this post for more info: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...&postcount=673 UNDESIRED FEATURES: INTERNET RADIO SETUP edit - apparently not everybody has had to register at RadioDenon - is this a bug that some do and some don't?? For those people that internet radio does NOT work for: Getting initial access to Internet Radio is somewhat clumsy, and not well documented by Denon, they just say in the manual to register at RadioDenon. However, before you can register at their website, you must do two things: 1) Determine your MAC address from Network setup / Network info 2) This is the clumsy part - you must first "send" your MAC address to RadioDenon, from the AVR, before RadioDenon will recognize it. To do this, you must first try using your Internet Radio from the NET/USB screen. The initial attempt to use Internet Radio seems to lock up the Denon, it does not respond for a period of time, and many do not wait it out, as it appears to be malfunctioning. At this point, it is attempting to send your MAC address to RadioDenon, it can take several minutes for that to work. Just wait until it is done, it will come back to the menu after a bit. Once it has come back, it should have sent the MAC address to Denon, you should then be able to successfully register at RadioDenon, it should recognize your MAC address after this step. To the programmers and documentation writers at Denon: Please: 1) Document this better in the manual 2) Display a message on the screen that says something like: "Registering MAC address - please wait" NETWORK STREAMING - When streaming across the network, when changing to another input (not NET/USB), the streaming does not stop. The stream continues until you turn the AVR off. This can be observed on a network switch, which continually flashes on the input port and AVR port, when streaming, this continues the flashing the AVR is turned off, but will return when the AVR is turned on, even though the NET/USB mode is not the current selection. It appears that there is no way to stop the streaming, except by: 1) change streaming to another streaming source 2) interrupt the streaming by disconnecting or turning off the source 3) turn the AVR off Frequency: seems to be consistant Impact: consumes network bandwidth, possibly interrupting other network flow Fix/Workaround: not determined yet ENHANCEMENTS NEEDED Current firmware version should be listed under the information menu. Impact: high - this is needed information, and should also be displayed at the web site. Workaround: Maintenance mode? Aspect - 4:3 or full - should be settable per input, rather than a blanket setting for all inputs. Impact: inconvenient Workaround: change system setting each time the input is changed, as needed. Web interface - looks to be designed by engineers for engineers, needs to be more user friendly, a better look and feel would go far. Impact: low Workaround: use the remote or the front panel ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Did i have any of this problem ?? Our denon and the usa version is bit different. Our local new denon, europe or country who's power 240-250v will be the non CI version. i think the firmware will also be slightly different. i had some of the problems (not all) but is not a real issues to me. 1. I had the GREY / BLACK SCREEN problem. when i was in htpc input and installing some software to the computer, the 3808 suddenly when like screensaver mode. i turn off screensaver and restarted the denon. i did not have that problem. 2. I had the MUTE BUG issue. when i press the mute button, the screen when black and on. I encounter this when in ps3 input but in htpc in input, there was no black sctrrn when i press the mute button. also when i was in htpc input, the gui overlay did not appear. 3. I did not have other problem/bug like mention above. the ip address all stated correctly. Thanks

Are you saying that at -30db level, there is popping but not at other levels? ??? no pop sound at all. at any level. what i ment was, i also tested at-30db level. it was still ok. don't worry :)
freebird2003 Posted September 10, 2007 Author Posted September 10, 2007 Any brothers out there who got 3808 will like to share their experience. Thanks alot
ALERT1624705860 Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 Seems like most of the bugs are related to things that requires network connection. BTW, why would you wanna press the "MUTE" button while you're in the Menu? Waiting for more comments on picture and HT sound quality of this amp.

BTW, why would you wanna press the "MUTE" button while you're in the Menu? Waiting for more comments on picture and HT sound quality of this amp. i have not really got into networking stuff yet. The picture quality is good. i have turn off upscaling (so the hdmi signal is passthrough mode) cause my plasma max is 1080i. the picture quality is superb. the sound quality rocks. i am still fine tuning on the crossover. i did not do audessy setup. i am still very skeptical abt it casue my previous receiver did not had any advance eq stuff yet the sound quality was rich and powerfull. maybe someone can share their exp with audessy. thanks

Hamilton Posted September 22, 2007 Posted September 22, 2007 I'm looking at getting a Denon 3808 or Yamaha 1800 next time I come to Singapore. I was looking at the Onkyo 875 as well but the heat issues it has got me looking at other brands instead. Could someone tell me what the current price is for the 3808?
freebird2003 Posted September 23, 2007 Author Posted September 23, 2007 it should be in the 1880 range. might be abit lower than that.
ricky101 Posted September 23, 2007 Posted September 23, 2007 it should be in the 1880 range. might be abit lower than that. FB - I was at KEC abt 1 week back... was quoted 1884. Btw, what speakers are you using? I'm doing some research b4 taking a plunge at this... was looking at the Onkyo 875 and 975 - liked the THX cert but was put off by the way they rate the pwr - 200w @1 ch driven... kinda stupid since we will rarely get only 1ch driven at any one time. You mentioned the Denon to be powerful... so would like to know what brand and model of speakers that you are using. Any major issue or minor bug so far? Are some of the issues reported in AVS exist in the Sg version?

Are some of the issues reported in AVS exist in the Sg version? hello, This can be subjective. i am using a very old speakers set. These are rosewood kenwood speakers. They can produce very strong bass and glass shattering like treble. i am using these speakers for abt 7 years. not for once they have dissapointed me. i have listen to many speaker systems but always when i return home, the sound of my speaker always entertain. Front : Kenwood LS-V710 3-way 4 Speaker System [Magnetically Shield] Woofer 200mm cone Type x2 Midrange 100mm cone type Tweeter Linaeum Type 8Ω 180w 35Hz-30000Hz (Freq Response) 600Hz, 3000Hz (Crossover Response) Center : Kenwood CS – V610 3-way 3Speaker System [Magnetically Shield] Woofer 100mm cone Type x2 Tweeter Linaeum Type 8Ω 150w 80Hz-30000Hz (Freq Response) 1000Hz, 3000Hz (Crossover Response) Surround: Kenwood RS- 610 2-way 3Speaker System [Dipolar Radiation] Woofer 100mm cone Type Fullrange 80mm cone Type x 2 8Ω 100w 100Hz-20000Hz (Freq Response) 2000Hz (Crossover Response) Subwoofer = Velodyne CHT-10R When i connect the 3808 to this speakers, it was like giving them a new life. the soundstage was bright, rich & clear. As for the bugs, they do not bother me at all. For daily and normal operation they seem transparent. Thanks
ricky101 Posted September 24, 2007 Posted September 24, 2007 Thanks FB. Anyone know what's the price for the 4308? Has it arrived at our shore? Looks like very little diff btw the 3808 and 4308 - the 10w gain in pwr would not mean much. I'm currently having a dedicated pwr amp to drive my Front L+R. Having the Rotel RMB 6ch driving my center (Bridged) and 4xrears. I felt that the Rotel is not powerful enuff at 6x60w (dunno if it's all ch driven) especially for the center. I've a huge ctr - see avatar, 5 drivers 3way config. In the long run, my ideal would be to get a dedicated mono amp (ctr) and a 4ch for the rear, or just stick with a dedicated mono and leave the receiver driving the rears. To me the surr are impt but not as crucial as the LCR - thus, the lower quality amp driving them should be fine and would not make that much a diff. Does KEC has the Onkyo to do a side by side comparison? rt
Hamilton Posted September 24, 2007 Posted September 24, 2007 FB - I was at KEC abt 1 week back... was quoted 1884. WOW!!! :D That's almost half price compared to here in Sweden!! And better than the S$2050 I was quoted for the Onkyo 875! Just waiting for them to get the Yamaha 1800 in stock (was told mid-november...) and see how much they want for that. Was listening to a pair of MA RS6 with a Yamaha 1800 last week (first shop here to get them in stock) and it sounded very nice!! 8) Also listened to a pair of Dali Ikon 6 with a Denon 3808 that sounded really sweet as well... Now I only have to decide which brand of receiver and which brand of speakers to get... Choices, choices... :)
c7221624705751 Posted September 25, 2007 Posted September 25, 2007 WOW!!! :D That's almost half price compared to here in Sweden!! I'm sure u know how many *times* more we pay for a Swedish car aka volvo here.... >:( (sorry for the OT). Denon pricing has always been very competitive here.

Denon pricing has always been very competitive here. Yeah, I know about the insane pricing for cars there in SG as well they are supposed to be scrapped after 10 years unless you pay another insane fee for it... ::) Back to Denon: With a 3808 receiver and a Denon 1940 dvd, is there a way to send DVD-Audio other than through 6 analog cables?
audiovideo Posted September 28, 2007 Posted September 28, 2007 what's the difference between 3808 & 3808CI? any price difference?
freebird2003 Posted September 29, 2007 Author Posted September 29, 2007 no difference in function but ci is for usa only. non- ci is for asia and europe region. Thanks
Guest xryptic Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Hi, Got the Denon 3808 av receiver a few weeks back, its working well with my HTPC and mediacorp Humax HD receiver. I also really love the internet audio streaming and am satisfied with its feature rich set for the price. I have a question, so did anybody manage to do a firmware update on this amp? I'm always getting a 'Login Failed" message when executing it. I am using a static assigned IP, using open DNS for the DNS servers. Regards
htfreak Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Just noticed the new 4308 receiver comes equipped with a DAB receiver on board. Pretty cool feature provided my place can receive the signal in the first place.

Regards Ok answering my own questions after doing some googling around. Saw on AVSForums that the way to get the player to update is to reset the amp to default settings using the 3 button method. That is to hold down the 'up' and 'down' arrow buttons on the amp and turn off the amp using the small power button. While still holding down the arrows, proceed to turn the set on using the same small power button. When the LED blinks continuously, you can let go of the arrow buttons. Next proceed to update through the GUI and presto! It updates just fine!
freebird2003 Posted November 14, 2007 Author Posted November 14, 2007 Hello, Anyone try to update the 3808 for the latest firmware. Please share your exp. Did you have to a reset to the reciver. Thanks
