hifiice Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 Dear all, Just took over an used local PS3 console (with latest firmware 1.90 upgraded) to be mainly as my DVD/BD player. Not really a gamer and dont know how to do the setting of PS3 to pair with my AV system. Hence, I wld appreciate if any bro could enlighten me by sharing your advice on the setting, thks in advance :) PS3 -> Marantz AVR via Optical -> 6.1 spk setup PS3 -> HD Ready LCD TV via HDMI -> 1080i PS3 Setting = A) BD/DVD Setting - Cinema Conversion (Automatic/Video?) - DVD upscaler (off/Double Scale/Normal/Full Screen?) - BD/DVD Video Output(HDMI) (Automatic/RGB/Ycr?) - BD 1080p 24Hz Output(HDMI) (Automatic/Off/On?) - BD/DVD Audio Output Format(HDMI) (Bitstream/LPCM?) - BD Audio Output Format (Optical Digital) (Bitstream/LPCM?) B) Music Setting - Audio CD Output Freq (48kHz or 44.1/88.2/176.4kHz?) - Bitmapping (off/Type1/Type2?) C) Display Setting - Cross Color Reduction Filter (On/Off?) - RGB Full Range (HDMI) (Limited/Full?) D) Network Settings - Saw the wireless connection guide provided in early thread and managed to connect successfully after following the step by step guidance. However, when I go to Playstation@Store, it prompted me to do a System Update via Setting. I thought since my current version is already 1.90, I need not update the version in order to surf the Store. Any one could offer their advice? Cheers!

In the process of learning, I wish to equip with better knowledge on HT and would appreciate if you could help me to understand better on the following : 1) For BD/DVD Video Output(HDMI), why not choosing Automatic instead of YCr? since my connect of video is via HDMI to my LCD TV? 2) Between BD Audio Output(optical) and BD/DVD Audio Output(HDMI), - why one is set at LPCM but the other is Bitstream? What is the difference? since I am using Optical to output to my AVR (both BD/DVD playback) as my existing AVR does not have HDMI input. - Also, when I change my AVR with HDMI input & output in future, will the setting remain the same if both video & audio signal is delivered via HDMI from PS3 to the new AVR? - Why there is no option for DVD Audio Output(Optical)? as I am playing DVD by PS3 via Optical currently 3) Network Settings, must I update my PS3 to be 1.92 ver before I can start downloading software from Playstation@Store? Since I am already 1.9 version currently. Last but not least, hope you dont mind my innocent questions as I am in the processing of learning and I guess this is the "fun part" of setting HT ourselves :p Cheers!
hifiice Posted September 6, 2007 Author Posted September 6, 2007 http://www.ps3sacd.com/faq.html Thks for your link bro, haha, I like the way this website put it :p
Doggie Howser Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 1) For BD/DVD Video Output(HDMI), why not choosing Automatic instead of YCr? since my connect of video is via HDMI to my LCD TV? YCrCb is the standard used in video encoding. RGB means the BR encoding has to be processed by the PS3. There is no right or wrong answer. I generally prefer to leave the source untouched and let the display handle the conversion. But if your display does a worse off job, switch to the other. Some displays also don't handle BTB and WTW properly when fed RGB. HDMI in LPCM gives you the full uncompressed audio but as you said, you don't have HDMI out now so that's irrelevant. But should you use HDMI for audio and video in future, this will make sure you don't get tripped up. A lot of owners had problems running TrueHD soundtracks with the new firmware cos they used Bitstream, and ended up getting Dolby Digital basic from the BR instead. Optical with Bitstream is cos otherwise you only get stereo PCM with the other option - Also, when I change my AVR with HDMI input & output in future, will the setting remain the same if both video & audio signal is delivered via HDMI from PS3 to the new AVR? Yes, keep the same settings - Why there is no option for DVD Audio Output(Optical)? as I am playing DVD by PS3 via Optical currently BR/DVD audio is handled the same way. you don't mean DVD-Audio, do you? That's not a supported format. 3) Network Settings, must I update my PS3 to be 1.92 ver before I can start downloading software from Playstation@Store? Since I am already 1.9 version currently. Yes. PS3 will not let you log on to the store if you don't have the latest firmware.
hifiice Posted September 6, 2007 Author Posted September 6, 2007 Bro Doggie, many many thks for your clear advices and guidance, very much appreciated. :) cheers!
ALERT1624705860 Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 - RGB Full Range (HDMI) (Limited/Full?) Full for RGB Hi Doggie, What does this option do? When to select "Full" vice versa.
Doggie Howser Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Hi Doggie, What does this option do? When to select "Full" vice versa. Full/Super White mean basically the same thing, just for different color space: RGB or YCrCb In some displays, they support an "enhanced" black level mode. If you enable the enhanced mode in the display, the source should also be in the same enhanced mode. Often this just enables the combination to pass BTB and WTW signals. You can try out different combinations with a demo source. Some BR DVDs from Sony have a secret test screen menu (key 7337 aka SONY in T9 speak) in the main menu and the test screens will be displayed. You can check to see if BTB and WTW are passed using this mode. ps what wud tonytakitani say? :) he paints me as an anti-BR fanboy and here I am dispensing PS3 configuration information... DUH!!!

hifiice Posted September 7, 2007 Author Posted September 7, 2007 HI! Bro Doggie, I had done the setting on BD/DVD Audio (HDMI) as LPCM and BD Audio (optical) as Bitstream. However, when I play my BD movie and I selected the option as PCM 5.1 (uncompressed) under the Audio Setup of the BD movie, my AVR only can show stereo (2 channels) output for the audio but not 5.1. However, if I select the option of normal 5.1 under the same Audio Setup, my AVR will directly output the 5.1 channels. May I know if I have done anything not correct? Thks for your advice again. :) cheers!

Just choose Dolby Digital for yr soundtrack for now.

How abt if I set my PS3's BD Audio (Optical) to PCM (from my existing Bitstream), will it be better off in SQ also? :) Cheers!

But there is no way the SPDIF connection (optical or coax) has enough bandwidth. So setting BD Audio to PCM will just give u stereo PCM. Ideally you need an HDMI receiver for the uncompressed audio quality.

Cheers! :)
