Hi, Bros. Juz audition Onkyo 875 and Denon 3808. In fact, oredi heard/tested Denon 3808 and oredi thought tat it is good AVR to toy with, esp. quite 'future-proof' bcos of its HDMI v1.3a.

Now, after auditioning Onkyo 875  :o  :o  :o

Tom will go back again, tis time fully equipped with DVD, SACD, MIC CD.......I juz need to cross tat line to put down the downpaymt  8)

The THX Ulta2 is AWESOME, which beats all my likings of Yammy DSP modes. The 5.1ch movie is AMAZING and ACTION-ENGAGING. Playing CD also produces good soundstage. Denon 3808 tends to have more high detail. Though Onkyo audio is slightly lack of high (compared to Denon 3808), I still incline towards its warmer musical reproduction.

But I am very relunctant to part my hard-earned cash of ard $2000 to get Onkyo 875. I am oso pretty Yammy, but has been told for Yammy with such features of Onkyo will easily cost ard $2700  :-X

So, any Bros out there who are oredi PROUD owners of Onkyo 875 to share the AV xprerience?

if you like Yamaha why not wait for Yamaha's 1.3 receivers they should be out soon...

do not rush into buying just because of the feature set - sooner or later all brands (especially your favourite sounding brand) will have same/similar feature set that made you choose it previously

I am not sure but hard to expect Denon or Yamaha will offer THX Ultra 2 Certification as well as HQV Reon Chipset for video processing with similar price upcoming model...

THX Ultra 2 Cerification might have nothing to do with sound quality, but at least it make sure that the power amp section of the 875/805/905 has the ability to drive speaker at reference level volume in quite a big room with the sound undistorted. In fact, I like the THX Cinema and Neural 7.1 much more than others sound mode offers in Onkyo, I am not sure such DSP will be included in Denon/Yamaha similar price model or not.

HQV Reon is nice for SD TV or SD DVD upscaling and de-interlacing too although it still has room for improvement like the various adjustment and PAL playback as found out by eggz.

[EDIT: eggz found out PAL problem has nothing to do with 875, it was Oppo 980 causing the issue.]

But juz now, playing from the SAME source, SAME software, the THX Ultra2 does make audible difference, though not WOW difference. Shld I say it also gives a little more audible detail, esp. when playing Stealth during the dog-fight, the afterburn sound detail - BAGUS. I always love DTS, but the THX Ultra2 somehow just makes it audible better with more body and detail.

Now I have Denon 1930 connected to Yammy 995 (dun laugh...I know it is a dino oredi :-X)  Oso my Front L/R is Pre-Out to a stereo amp. Understand that 875 has tis bridging feature to 'pump-up' the output power, and oso Bi-Wire feature  :o Tomorrow will get them to demo 1930 on 875, esp. to hear SACD.

Now in a dilemma whether to go for it. Does that mean the current stereo setup will be rubbish ??? cos juz now the 1930 audio thru 875 sounds GOOD oso.

Thinking hard.........oso digging deep into my pocket. But cant resist the dream of 1930 to 875 to Panny TH-37PX70  ::)  ;D

Try auditioning the 875 with THX Neural 7.1...  ;D

Else, if u don't need the HQC, can save a bit and go for the onkyo 805 instead.
