oasis1624705873 Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 Hi Bros, This is my 1st post for this forum. I would like to find out which is a better source. HD or BlueRay cos i'm getting a player. Can bros also recommend some players too? Thanks
desray Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 Each has its own merits. Its hard to pick a winner especially when the format war still wages on. For the most part, BD sales in Singapore seem more favorable than HD DVD sales...partly because of the cheaper PS 3 Console which can double-up as a Gaming system and play BD titles...so retailers are more willing to bring in BD titles over HD DVD here...This is my own observation and I may be wrong.
oasis1624705873 Posted September 4, 2007 Author Posted September 4, 2007 I notice that too, however xbox has the HD DVD drive so that's why i'm still contemplating of which to get. I also notice that BD are more expensive then HD, any reason for that ? becos of quality of the disc?
Jag Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 BRD expensive?.. of cos its more expensive. Its a Sony technology after all....Sony isn't cheap. HD-DVD main bargaining chip till now is the lower cost of production of the media. Picture quality wise, I feel both BRD and HD-DVD are close equals and in many movies, we dun have a choice to choose BRD or HD-DVD version. Most times, a movie is available in either one or the other format, and not both. If you want to start watching HD movies now, just pick a format today that you like, enjoy the movies on that format and enjoy them till you can enjoy the other format.
htfreak Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 I notice that too, however xbox has the HD DVD drive so that's why i'm still contemplating of which to get. I also notice that BD are more expensive then HD, any reason for that ? becos of quality of the disc? If you don't mind the hassle, you can import in the Toshiba HD-A2 which is the cheapest stand-alone HD-DVD player on the market from places like Amazon and ValueElectronics and use VpostUSA to ship it back. Total cost inclusive of shipping charges should not exceed S$500 but you can redeem 5 free discs from Toshiba. Many members here have gone this route without any major problems. In comparison the Singapore equivalent player, the HD-E1 costs $919 during Comex but came with 3 movie titles and a $120 HMV voucher.
yulee Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 There's unbelievable deep hatred between the Blue-Ray and HD DVD camps - if you want you go here to read what they have to say about one another ;) http://forums.highdefdigest.com/ I have a PS3 so I'm stuck with Blue-ray for the moment but I'm format neutral. I think the best solution is to have a dual-format player. They should really be joining forces to fight the Real opponent SD DVDs ::)
jayson1624705825 Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 Soon one of the format will die off, remember VHS and Betamax, and you will soon end up will a lot of useless discs. ;D ;D
Jag Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 I'd rather remain format neutral.........when the time comes whatever format wins (or peaceful coexistance). I feel that this war will not be like a VHS/Betamax outcome due to several reasons. Unlike VHA/Betamax where they were mechanically different, the HD-DVD/BRD shares alot of similarities that can really make coexistance a reality. Another point is that there have been several wars that resulted in actual co-existance.... leading to the point that the global market is indeed big enough to support 2 formats; with the low cost of electronics being a major driver. I think consumers will prefer to wait out.....but they will wait until their backside itchy after seeing so many friends with Hidef movies on their hidef displays. See liao they will also jump in even with the war still on-going. I feel that this war can really last for many years......... if we choose to be loyal to only one format, I think there's going to be alot of great movies that you will miss out over the next few blockbuster seasons. After all, a HD-DVDP is not very expensive, and a PS3 is really a competent BRDP too.
armoury Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 Well said Jag. I too am neutral, and am waiting for a dual format player to come out before jumping in. Although price-wise getting two machines isn't prohibitive, the real estate in the entertainment console is... I simply don't have the space for two more players, nor do I want to have to fiddle with switching connectors back and forth -- unfortunately my display is already 3 years old, so it only has one HDMI input. Then again, some people have none (yes, this means you, yellowhandman... ;) )
oasis1624705873 Posted September 4, 2007 Author Posted September 4, 2007 There's actually a possibility of a dual format player?? Sorry becos i'm new to this
Guest tonytakitani Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 I also notice that BD are more expensive then HD, any reason for that ? becos of quality of the disc? By "expensive", do you mean the players? If so, the PS3 is the cheapest hidef player in the local market, at SG$750ish. If you mean the discs themselves, there is very little difference in average prices between the two formats. As you can see from the Amazon prices: http://www.blu-raystats.com/amazonstats.php?OrderBy=Price http://www.hddvdstats.com/amazonstats.php?OrderBy=Price
yulee Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 I'm sure prices will fall once the OEM China manufacturers move in - they always do
jayson1624705825 Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 I'm sure prices will fall once the OEM China manufacturers move in - they always do what makes you think they are currently not made in china?
varun1624705824 Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 Hmmm... a clue might be the sticker behind, which says "Made in Japan". ;) Of course, they could be lying... - V. what makes you think they are currently not made in china?
Fred1624705785 Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 There's actually a possibility of a dual format player?? Sorry becos i'm new to this yes, there's ;D from LG & Samsung.

Doggie Howser Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 on a side note, for bros who own PS3 , is the blueray player region free? cos i believe that there's various region code for BD ya? then if its not region free, what region coded disc can PS3 play ? Phaton Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Hee...hee....Like what "Alien vs Predator" movie promo slogan says, "Who Ever Wins, We Lose". Winners are still the movie makers. ;D
lwm99 Posted September 26, 2007 Posted September 26, 2007 If you don't mind the hassle, you can import in the Toshiba HD-A2 which is the cheapest stand-alone HD-DVD player on the market from places like Amazon and ValueElectronics and use VpostUSA to ship it back. For the 5 free discs, are you referring to the rebate? How do you redeem the 5 discs from Singapore?
Audio Posted September 26, 2007 Posted September 26, 2007 No much chance at all. Closing date is 30 Sep. I bought my HD-A30 on Sat 22 Sep. Failed to pass receipt and coupon to my US friend residing in US. The coupon allow you to tick 5 titles out of 14. (I didn't made the efforts because I own almost all the selection short of 2 which I have no interest in.) (Audio)
nawoo Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 How come in the US, blue ray prices are so low ah. I see Amazon.com selling each disc for less than 20 dollars only. Then i see the blu ray dvds selling 2nd hand in this forum for 50 dollars sing. Doesn't make sense
lwm99 Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 Generally new Blu-ray movies selling at S$49.90-S$59.90 in local stores.
nawoo Posted September 27, 2007 Posted September 27, 2007 that's crap might as well just order from amazon man
Norman_Chan Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 Also notice that local BR movies are price higher than the HD movies ....
