valjean Posted September 1, 2007 Posted September 1, 2007 Hi all I'm looking around for a LCD panel for living room and master bedroom. Need not get a full HD panel as I don't watch that much DVDs, much less BR or HD-DVD. Currently, I am pretty keen on the Sharp PX5 series. Any suggestions on which LCD panels are good to get, and also do well for normal TV broadcasts as well? TIA!
petetherock Posted September 1, 2007 Posted September 1, 2007 Hi and welcome You may notice we like plasmas more, esp in SD TV and other SD sources. The panny is a v decent buy, see jeffong's thread, if you do a search you will turn up more recommendations for plasmas
valjean Posted September 1, 2007 Author Posted September 1, 2007 Thks, Pete, for the advice. I had exclude plasmas primarily due to the reflective glare of these panels.
petetherock Posted September 1, 2007 Posted September 1, 2007 I suggest you SEE the panels and see if this reflection is an issue with either panels I have both LCD and plasma side by side, you can see my comments and those of others who have been to my place
valjean Posted September 1, 2007 Author Posted September 1, 2007 Ok thanks - will go compare the Pioneer 427 and the Panny 40PV70 with the Sharp PX5.
Doggie Howser Posted September 1, 2007 Posted September 1, 2007 The other alternative is to improve the source :) Using the HDTV set top box can improve the image quality significantly even for SD sources.
cracker Posted September 2, 2007 Posted September 2, 2007 I had just bought a Bravia D series and using the Starhub digital box. Is it true certain channel signal is "Stronger" resulting in better PQ ? I found tat the PQ fron HBO was very good..."almost better than DVD". The image is super clear and very "real life" ( almost have a 3D effect). I dun noe how to describe it....but if u guys had ever watched or sampled those soap opera shown on Tv 5 yrs ago, I believed u will noticed the PQ is very different from conventional programe. This phenonmenon was also presence in certain scene on the free to air,,,,saw similar effect while watching "Thomas Crown" on TV5 yesterday nite. Any idea what can cause such difference ? But of cos, certain channels were terrible..... thx.
valjean Posted September 2, 2007 Author Posted September 2, 2007 Have checked out 427XG, 42PV70 and 42PX5 at Courts today. The 427XG indeed has noticeably better PQ, especially for SD broadcasts, compared to the 42PX5. But the reflections were also very evident on the former during dark scenes. This is a concern especially when I have full-height windows on both sides of the TV console. PQ on the PV70 wasn't fantastic but that could be due to the settings on the display set. Am torn in between plasma and LCD now for my living room. ???
ekardo Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 Thks, Pete, for the advice. I had exclude plasmas primarily due to the reflective glare of these panels. do you know CRT was reflective since day 1? did you mind that ? haa.. the big CRT in my parent's house was also reflecting the lights from everywhere, but I did not notice until I really want to take note of it...
Ong Hai Peng Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 The best LCD panel I've seen for tv broadcasts is the Philips Pixel Plus 2. Watched in a home setting it's very fluid and plasma like without reflections. The colours are too rich for my liking though. Just make sure you ask for Pixel Plus 2, it's far better than the normal pixel plus series.
hdtvsg Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 A lot of time it is due to the circuitry that does all the noise filtering etc. The more complex it is , the more expensive the set is. I have played with Samsung LCD and they do display Ch 5 8 U SD channels very well.
valjean Posted September 4, 2007 Author Posted September 4, 2007 Noted and reflection is indeed one of my considerations, for reasons I've stated in my previous post. No need for you to be condescending. do you know CRT was reflective since day 1? did you mind that ? haa.. the big CRT in my parent's house was also reflecting the lights from everywhere, but I did not notice until I really want to take note of it...

petetherock Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 Bro ask yourself what is your viewing conditions, actually a bit of curtains and dimmer viewing conditions will really help improve your viewing satisfaction. See the pictures of my setup, it makes my room feel like Odeon!
