My choice of HDMI DVD Players narrow down to 2 model, OPPO DV-981HD ($435 MO) & Pioneer DV-400V ($319).

Which player should I get? Will it be better to top up $116 to get OPPO DV-981HD better?

Any advise?

Thanks.

i'm biased, please note. :D

1. do a web search on the best value allinone dvd player, you'd see Oppo pop out many times.

2. quality components + proven track record. (except for the flimsy tray, internals are excellent)

3. 2 succesful MOs done in xtremeplace. plus you can see the high demand in the WTB section

If TV's native res is not true HD (e,g 1080p) you can not watch OPPO at 1080p because OPPO 981 do not upscale 1080p signal at 24hz. For 1080i native res tv, max res you will get 720p, 1080i

Yup thats correct. Another important thing to note is the display. However it is a good upscaler for 720p and 1080i (my current disply max is 1080i) due to the superior video chipset (DCDI Faroudja) Its a big upgrade compared to conventional DVD player.

Check out my reviews on the Oppo 981 on my Sharp display. I also did an A/B comparision between the 981 and 970.

So even other player can upscale 1080p on my LG 37LC7R,

doesn't mean Oppo also can cos it is not 24hz?

You cant upscale to 1080p because you need to have a 1080p display.

Err.. well, there exists non Full-HD TVs that accept 1080p50/60Hz video signal, e.g. Panasonic PV70/PV700 plasmas. When fed with 1080p, the Panny will downscale the signal to fit its WXGA (1366x768) resolution.

What really matters is which device provide better de-interlacing and scaling, the TV or the DVD-player?

correct me if I am wrong....

the issue is can the display device (be it LCD or Plasma TV) display whatever signal being fed.

Some TV can accept 1080p (24/50/60 or watever)  or 1080i  but if they are only HD ready....they will definitely have to scale down the signal to fit the panel's configuration.

I did a search in the net and found that my TV can input 1080p at

HDMI 60p/30p/50p/24p.

So my TV can accept the 1080p from Oppo instaed of 1080i?

It means your TV can accept both 1080i & 1080p.

If can accept 1080p, definitely able to accpet 1080i & below. ;D

Any idea which DCDi chip is the Oppo using (FLi2310 or 2301)? Base on the numbers, do it mean the FLi2310 has better specs?

They are the distributor for Oppo and have no shop front. They have stop bringing in 981 since 3/4 of last year. You may want to consider the 980 or wait for the 983 to be available.

Yup all units are region free by using the remote to unlock it.
