wolverex Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 Hi guys, I'm thinking of replacing my wall socket receptacles to Furutechs . By comparing the layout of the screw holes on the gang box in my wall and the wall receptacles mounting holes, i've realized that they're different. I believe US households have a different size gang box? Mine's a standard gang box to accomodate the standard 2 socket receptacles used in most Singapore households. Anyone had experience with this? Is there some sort of bracket that i can buy to mount US Furutech wall receptacles to Singapore standard 2 socket gang box? thank you in advance!
liuhao Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 i believe you can get a face plate from x-audio for this purpose. the socket receptacle can be mounted to the face plate and face plate can be mounted to your existing wall outlet.

Thinking of installing that too, did u check the one from PS Audio? Where did u buy yours & at what price? I assume that's no switch on it, is it safe to plug & unplug?
liuhao Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 me using oyaide SWO-XXX and a customized aluminum face plate (for singapore local size) from x-audio. i saw a furutech face plate too with receptacle when i was there.
wolverex Posted August 19, 2007 Author Posted August 19, 2007 wow thanks guys! i'll go check it out! Actually i have not bought them yet cos i was just looking at pictures.

Guest Assys1606 Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 so do your appliances have a master switch to cut of current completely? what about surges.. I guess the master switch is the circuit breaker (on/off) that link to the wall receptacle that u want to install, correct me if i'm wrong. Understand u have to reduce the plug & unplug practice since there's no switch on the receptacle. Like they said the switch increases the resistance. Even normal UK wall socket in our HDB flat does not provide surge protection. Therefore i guess replacing them with US receptacle does not have surge protection too. Checked with Music Link, even the Al face plate costs the same price as the budget 2x US receptacle, that is S$38. Any idea where can i get at a cheaper price...both the face plate & the receptacle?
liuhao Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 you have wide choices for receptacles. for oyaide, price range from $100 to $150 (R1). my SWO-XXX (previous top of range) costs around $120. R1 is current top of range but i feel it's just unbelieable too tight. it's very hard to plug in and once plugged in, i really have a hard time to unplug. but some people feel R1 sounds better. SWO-XXX is also very tight but reasonable. the matching aluminium face plate costs $20 if i remember correctly. there are receptacles that come with bracket which you can tighen up the plug. CSE has it if i remember correctly. not sure about furutech receptacles but furutech has its own matching face plate also. saw it at x-audio but didnt ask price. yes the wall outlet doesnt have surge protect. there is a fuse box in my current house and also my previous hdb flat. i am sure your house has one too. well not really fuse but some kinda surge jumper (i dont know what its called). it will automatically jump off when short circuit. make sure you turn it off before you replace your wall receptacle. failing to do so may endanger to your life! i know many people try to avoid giving any advices regarding this topic due to potential risk and liability... for oyaide receptacles, there are some useful tips i found out when connecting wires to receptacle. for example, thoughout clean up bare wire before connect. also, you may find it's very hard to connect earth (ground) wire for oyaide receptacle because for earth there is only a screw there. you will need a spacer (can find in homefix) which can make life lots of easier. oh yes, x-audio does not have nuts that are required to fix receptacle to face plate (though you can use existing screws to fix face plate to wall). you will need to find this two screws somewhere (homefix should have it). ok the last, avoid using magnetic screw driver! honestly i am a bit worried about giving advice for this. abit kiasu but better be safe than sorry.
koma Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 u can try out ps audio outlets also. bout 120 for a 2 socket

Avoid using magnetic screw driver! Hi liuhao, thanks for your input. I believe the surge jumper u mentioned is a circuit breaker which will trip when there's a short. U reset by turning it off & then on again. So how's your sound quality after replacing the normal HDB wall receptacle? By the way, why avoid using a magnetic screw driver?

You will induce magnetism on the metallic parts which is a no-no. If i'm not wrong ...
liuhao Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 not very sure about the sonic difference because i also changed a powercord at same time. that introduced big difference but can not judge individual difference. heehee...
Guest Assys1606 Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 Hi, i have checked with LHS today. They do sell Hubbell US AC wall receptacle, model HBL 8200i for S$30, the face plate is S$5. The price is attractive for budget spender. One question, this model HBL 8200i is rated at 125V, can it be used with our 230V supply? Thanks!

Thanks! is the face plate made of aluminium? if yes it will be good for $5. but make sure it's not made of steel. i think all US receptacle rated 125V. actually all US plug powercord also rated 125V. should be no problem. oh yes china use US style receptacle and 240V voltage...so in principle "certified" MIC receptacle shall be more reliable. heehee...
Guest Assys1606 Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 Thanks. I wanted to install/convert my current HDB UK single 3 pin wall socket into twin US wall receptacle Hubbell 8200i but found the dimension not quite the same. May have problem mounting it therefore might drop the idea.
Olivia1624706006 Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 Found these on audiogon. yeppie99 Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 Sorry to dig up an old topic. Does anyone know where I can get those partition wall clip-on mounting box which can fit the hubbell/furutech/oyaide US receptacles? I have only seen those for our local receptacles.
Quest88 Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 Sorry to dig up an old topic. Does anyone know where I can get those partition wall clip-on mounting box which can fit the hubbell/furutech/oyaide US receptacles? I have only seen those for our local receptacles. should be available from LHS.. there should be no diff in the box, except if u want to use the US mounting plate. there are local version of aluminium plate which can fit into our standard UK slot.
yeppie99 Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 I've asked LHS and they only have a metal box version which I bought. It is difficult to install and I feel that having to screw onto the partition wall near to the hole cut out is not as firm as the clip version. The UK box cannot fit the US receptacles and the faceplate screws onto the receptacle itself, not the mounting box. So I'm stumped.
Audio Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 I have just converted my UK wall socket to US socket in just 1 hour over the last weekend. This is what I used:- Costs about $640 HKD. http://www.sineworld.com/html/s2.html Just located the CB for the wall socket and turn it off. Double check using a test pen and make sure you see the live light up with the CB on and then off when you flip the CB off. This is a very important step, means life or death. Unscrew the UK faceplace, remove the earth, neutral and live wire to the new US faceplate one by one. Do not allow any of the wires to touch each other, sometimes, touching earth and neutral can trip the ELCB. After transfer the wires over, the faceplate goes back to the 2 mounting holes.....very easy. Good luck and be careful. (Audio) PS: The hole shaped like a "T" is the neutral.

You dont need to use clip la, juz screw direct onto the parition wall with a small wooden plank in btw the parition walls, screw directly onto the partition wall without reinforcement you will feel not firm enough.

Audio Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 Wow. Nice but I doubt is it possible for this. From this picture cannot because the mounting holes are different. But I am sure you can replace the faceplate holder box to one that have the correct horizontal mounting holes. (Audio)
Guest jonlee Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 This is the older generation of holder that is smaller in size. Thew newer ones that are commonly used currently can fit Audio's faceplate. Wow. Nice but I doubt is it possible for this. Anyone got experience replacing this?
