Guest jonlee Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 Oppo 981 or denon 2930 are the 2 most popular ones in this forum.
yellowhandman Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 Hi I am not familar with Denon dvd player..but those tat I saw are usually > 400 dollars. denon 1930 is very highly rated, and is less than $400. denon 2930 is even more highly rated, but is about $1000. i think you should check out the 1930.

yellowhandman Posted August 19, 2007 Posted August 19, 2007 thx for ur reply and suggestion. so the performance of denon 1930 is on par with the Oppo 981 which is ~ $435 ? my pricing on the denon 1930 might be wrong, but it is definitely in that same price range with the oppo 981. i can't tell you which is better, though. but i've read very good things about both. oppo seems to be the most popular choice here on XP, with many oppo users praising it in the same way that mac users praise macs! just to explain - i don't own an upscaling player myself (apart from PS3) because my plasma doesn't have HDMI...but based on what i've read, when i upgrade my plasma, the upscaling player i would buy would be the 1930. previously, i wanted a 2930, but as i'm committed to blu-ray now, upscaling of SD-DVDs is now less important and so the 1930 will suffice.
Guest jonlee Posted August 19, 2007 Posted August 19, 2007 If oppo performance is the same as 1930, then the oppo will not be popular liao. I don't own any of these 3, but in terms of quality based on reviews from this forum: 2930 oppo 981 1930 my pricing on the denon 1930 might be wrong, but it is definitely in that same price range with the oppo 981. i can't tell you which is better, though. but i've read very good things about both. oppo seems to be the most popular choice here on XP, with many oppo users praising it in the same way that mac users praise macs! just to explain - i don't own an upscaling player myself (apart from PS3) because my plasma doesn't have HDMI...but based on what i've read, when i upgrade my plasma, the upscaling player i would buy would be the 1930. previously, i wanted a 2930, but as i'm committed to blu-ray now, upscaling of SD-DVDs is now less important and so the 1930 will suffice.

Guest jonlee Posted August 19, 2007 Posted August 19, 2007 Oppo does not need additional transformer if bought locally.

cn9601 Posted August 19, 2007 Posted August 19, 2007 There's a thread on Oppo 931HD at http://www.xtremeplace.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=42460.0 Think you can oni buy Oppo stuff online. Bought Denon 1930 at $450. Diff: Oppo 931HD no Component Video Output, but can decode HDCD. Denon is little more expensive than Oppo. So far, pretty happy wif Denon. Even I use cheapo composite RCA to my Stereo amp, the AQ is quite competitve with a dedicated CD player.
FookLai Posted August 19, 2007 Posted August 19, 2007 Oppo does not need transformer even you buy in US. I bought the 971 from Amazon, also no need to use transformer. I totally agree with Jonlee, the Oppo 981 should be better than the Denon 1930 though lose out to the Denon 2930. Fook Lai
cracker Posted August 19, 2007 Author Posted August 19, 2007 thx for all the feedback, I had ordered the Bravia 40D300. and was given a $200 Sony voucher over the weekend.. I went to look ard Best Denki and some of the upscaling players available were the panasonic, samsung and philips going from 199 to 220 dollars. One way is to get a player from this range...and then use the voucher to offset a PS3 during xmas time.
JT Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 Samsung 1080p7 costs 179sgd (member price) only in Challenger. Can upscale to 1080p. I think its really good for its price. Only thing is that cannot play VCD. I think this is a major setback.
