Hi. For a friend, may I ask whether the Cyrus is considered as close to The Ultimate CD Player. It will be connected to Yamaha 661 AV Amp and will drive Front L/R Mission E3, Mission E3C, ceiling spkrs and I think a Danish life-style woofer.

To me, the Cyrus 6 is kinda overkill. But my friend has developed a 1st love with the player after auditiong  player from Marantz 5001 to Rotel, and then this Cyrus. I think it is quoted at $1,200. But it can only play redbook CD. I am thinking why not get one with SACD/DVD-Audio/HDCD, like a Marantz stuff.

Any crtics / recommendation / comment is GREATLY Welcomed!  ;D

Lol... its gonna be hard to give you anything but my personal view here cos its an objective question (i.e. what is an ultimate cd player).  If your friend likes it and is willing to pay for it, why not? I heard the Cyrus 6 myself. Nice player but its not the best at its price point to me but what I go for in my sound may not be the same as what your friends might.  That said, if a detailed sound is what he likes, I think this combo would work, especially with the Mission E3s and their textile tweeters (avoid speakers with metal tweeters with Cyrus, which I would consider to be on the bright side of neutral).

To me, universal player doesn't start sounding good until you get to the higher end. At mid-price ranges, you're generally better off getting a dedicated redbook player.  Just audition them and see what I mean. :) A $1500 play-all player will more often than not lose out to a dedicated cd-only $1500 player.

TYVM Nstarone ;)

Actually my other concern for my frien is tat the Cyrus 6 is connected to a Yamaha 661, which is almost like an entry level AV. I like the Mission E3, though. So the Cyrus seems like under 'spent' while connected to an AV, though AV can be set to Direct Mode so-called to bypass allowing Cyrus to perform DAC only. My frien will audition 1 or 2 amp to match Cyrus, for his future spending  ::)

IMO, I think the Cyrus would pair nicely with a slightly warmish amp. :) If he still wants to stick to the AVR route, do consider the Marantz 7001 and higher. I'm using the 8001 myself and liked it (tho I've moved on and separated my 2 channel from my HT system).
