Guys,

I'm playing music from Denon 1930 using it's analog output. (PCM bitstream for DD & DTS).

The issue I have is that I'm unable to get 2.1 working on this setup.

Ie I can only play stereo without the sub.

I've tried to set Denon to output audio through analog - stereo (obviously wont' work ) and then set it to multichannel.

Tried on yamaha to set it to music, stereo 7.1 etc but still the sub does not work (no greenlight on the back of it).

Anybody can share a tip, or is this just impossible ?  ???

Thanks

PCM bitstream = digital

It is advisable to use DD/DTS bitstream instead of PCM (multichannel audio is downmixed to 2.0 PCM stream)

ok -  if you are using the stereo analog outputs connect to DVD input on the amp, and do not use direct mode (this mode bypasses bass management)

The processing to get 2.1 also involves a A/D conversion of the analog input, so it might be better for you to just use the digital inputs and skip the additional A/D stage

Do you know if your amp does bass management on the multi-ch analog inputs? Some amps can but chances are, they won't. i.e you cannot get 2.1 thru the multich analog inputs

Also make sure the subwoofer is set up in the receiver, and adjust the sub output level

Hi SC, so let me know if I intrepret this correctly,

the remedy is to use digital input instead of analog input from DVD to the receiver using PCM bitstream ?

The sub woofer and level should be ok, as I can hear them loud and clear when playing disk with 5.1 DD. It's only when I poped in music CD that I can not seems to get the sub to work.

Guess I'll be getting some cable today.

Thanks!

Hi. Using digital (optical / coaxial cable), the sound stage will be different when u play your movie, esp. DD or DTS. At the same time, u could play normal CD, and likely u shld get the boom as well - but tis 0.1 LFE is managed by yr Receiver. U could also set 1930 Bass Enhancement ON. It is just tat u have 2.1 spkrs, so when playing MOVIE, u lose tat "little bit" of surround effect bcos of absence of Rear Spkrs. But if you choose to play MOVIE in 2 ch mode, the SQ will still be different bet digital and your current analog L/R connection.

Like SC said, analog L/R doesnt include tat 0.1 LFE = so theres no woof sound. I will have expected yr 2 Front spkrs to give out the Bass, unless the pair is satellite cube=Bose???

At the moment, my 1930 is connected with digital optical and 5.1ch analog to AV amp, and the analog L/R (like yours) to another Integrated Stereo Amp tat drives a pair of floor standing spkrs.  And so I have the boom. But playing stereo CD from 1930 is a few steps inferior than playing stereo from a dedicated CD player. Then why I connect L/R analog on 1930, well at least I can choose to play my Eagles DVD thru PCM and have a different hearing xperience on a Stereo amp  ;D

For my yamaha, if you're in 2-channel stereo or straight-effect mode, as long as your cross-over is set high enough the sub kicks in.

But don't be surprised, most of the music cds i have barely have any sub 40hz sounds, previous when i tried the xover at 40hz, 60hz, the sub didn't kick in, but at the thx recommended 80hz they do.

I don't really like 2.1, but it is good for playing dance...loud :)

Hi dmateo,

You should be able to get 2.1 sound through digital or analog connection while you choose STEREO on yamaha AVR.

Some subwoofer need certain volume (louder) in order to be trigger.

Did you set the Speaker Front L and Front R to LARGE or SMALL? If it is LARGE, try set it to SMALL.

Also, don't set too low on your crossover on AVR. Disable the Crossover on Subwoofer.

I don't think you can get 2.1 sound if you choose MULTI-CH or DIRECT on Yamaha AVR if you play stereo CD because the AVR will bypass the bass management. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Hi bros,

Thank you for all your reply.

I've inspect my setting again now. I have

Denon 1930 connected to RX-AV657 using digital coax cable and component (for picture).

the setting on denon is to output PCM and bitstream for both DD and DTS.

Speakers are satellite, Monitor Audio R90 with RSW-12 Sub.

The speaker on receiver was set to small, crossover is 80hz same as in the sub.

What I notice is that whenever I played CD, I can not hear the sub playing.

How do I know this.

1. The AMP did not display the icon for .1 which normally is there when I play 5.1 movie

2. The Sub (which I set to Auto) indicator is red, indicating that the sub is not active.

I've tried also to set the yamaha so that lfe only be output to the sub, but that makes things worst as expected.

Don't quite understand..can elaborate more?

Which model of Yamaha AVR did you using?

1. The .1 icon will not display when you choose to play STEREO on AVR remote but the AVR will route the low frequency to the Subwoofer if you have configure your AVR correctly.

2. Can you try to play those music with double-bass or heavy drum? How loud do you play usually? Do you have a SPL meter to test it?

add to that - the .1 (and all digital display) channel icon only displays if incoming digital channel is active. for example, if your incoming digital feed from DD is 5.1 it will display 5.1 (some newer ones have little boxes representing speakers). If you select a DD2.0 sountrack from a movie it will display 2.0 only.

If your bass management is working, you should still hear the subwoofer though.

I would check if the receiver setting for "stereo" has the sub switched on or off, maybe the settings for speakers is set to "large" etc

Ok Guys,

Got this working 4 hours before I left for Hong Kong yesterday  ;D ;D

Yes, you guys are right, it did come up. I turned the volume on the sub low and I keep toggling configuration and jumping to conclusion to fast (partly because I'm desperate and need to get it working and its 3AM in the morning).

On yamaha setting you can set the lfe to be sent to sub and satellite, satellite only or sub only (there are three options I think those are the options).

You can do this by pressing menu on remote and then go to audio setup.
