keai Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 Went down Adelphi today and have the audition in KEC for 3 configs at 3~4k range, not able to decide which one to buy. In terms of watching movie, no significant difference for all 3 configs. Music wise, can't really tell the difference between config 1 and 2, but config 3 sounds better. Bros kindly give some comments on below settings and suggestions of other combination with 3~4k range are welcome, many thanks! Config 1 ($3088): ========================== Main: Tannoy Fusion 4 (S$1099) Centre: Tannoy Fusion Centre (S$275) Rear: Tannoy Fusion R (S$250) Sub: Velodyne CHT-8R (S$699) AMP: Onkyo TX-SR605 (S$765) Config 2 ($3963): ========================== Main: Mission E34 (S$1599) Centre: Mission E3C (S$450) Rear: Mission E30 (S$450) Sub: Velodyne CHT-8R (S$699) AMP: Onkyo TX-SR605 (S$765) Config 3 ($4042): ========================== Main: Quad 21L (S$1580) Centre: Quad L-Centre (S$699) Rear: Wharfedale 9.0 (S$299) Sub: Velodyne CHT-8R (S$699) AMP: Onkyo TX-SR605 (S$765)
ical Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 Go for Config 3 without the sub but change the rear surrounds to Quad 11L. You'll have a very solid system that last you quite some time. I used to own the 21L for stereo listening. Excellent speakers for it's price. Then save up and go for SVS sub. ;D Even the smallest PB10-NSD: US$499, can beat bigger sub out there. ;D http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-box-10nsd.cfm
keai Posted August 12, 2007 Author Posted August 12, 2007 Can change config 3 centre speakers to Tannoy Fusion Centre as I feel Tannoy centre one not bad and much cheaper actually. Is Quad 11L around S$900? Then the config will be: Config 4 (~$4320): ========================== Main: Quad 21L (S$1580) Centre: Tannoy Fusion Centre (S$275) Rear: Quad 11L (~S$900) Sub: PB10-NSD (S$800) AMP: Onkyo TX-SR605 (S$765)
game_goondu Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 try to have the left/centre/right speakers to be from the same brand...
keai Posted August 12, 2007 Author Posted August 12, 2007 try to have the left/centre/right speakers to be from the same brand... Will it matter if not the same brand? BTW, seems have to wait long to get SVS sub, right?
dmateo Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 yeah.. and if I'm not wrong, no local warranty + step down transformer required.
Guest jonlee Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 Svs don't need a stepdown transformer. The direct warranty from svs is good. Just email them the problem, they will ship the replacement part to u.
ical Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 Will it matter if not the same brand? BTW, seems have to wait long to get SVS sub, right? All speakers should all come from the same manufacturer. Especially your main and centre. This is to ensure that each one will have same tonal balance as the others. You’ll hear the same quality of sound regardless of which speaker is generating it. SVS is definitely worth the wait. Have you heard it before? If not, just ask any SVS owners here who stay nearest to you for audition. They'll be glad to show you the dark side. ;D

And Quad Centre is way better. Quad 11L cost $850.
keai Posted August 12, 2007 Author Posted August 12, 2007 Many thanks to all bros, so the config will have to be changed to below one. My initial budget is ~3k and now 50% over already, no joke :-\ SVS is so famous in XP, sure heard before. never think of buying it because of the long shipment lead time. Will seriously consider getting one since bro ical recommended, not sure 2nd MO still open or not. Config 4 (~$4694): ========================== Main: Quad 21L (S$1580) Centre: Quad L-Centre (S$699) Rear: Quad 11L (S$850) Sub: PB10-NSD (S$800) AMP: Onkyo TX-SR605 (S$765)
petetherock Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 Bro What is your aim, HT or music? What is your ratio? If you need to save, get the Quad 12 for the fronts. Also consider the Monitor Audio RS series, (there is no need to get everything from the same shop) Partner them with the 605 or 805 and save up for a PB 10 or higher from SVS. There is a thread on suggested systems for HT try searching for it.
petetherock Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 BTW best to check with the MO on SVS on the price of the subs, I am not sure if your $800 reflects the real cost of the SVS. P
petetherock Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 Try this place for some ideas and use the search function: http://www.xtremeplace.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=43618.0
keai Posted August 12, 2007 Author Posted August 12, 2007 Thanks for the kind help Pete, actually I'm totally a newbie in this area. Came to XP because of the plan to buy a LCD TV, read quite a number of your posts in XP and HWZ, very helpful. LCD TV alone is not enough, so I try to set up a system for 60% Movie & 40% Music but don't know where to start till I went to KEC (mentioned very frequently in XP, so just follow lor.... :D). Saw your setting pics in your posts, very nice setup and I like the design of Monitor Audio RS series, looks cool. But seems there is no audition in KEC for MA speakers and I went down quite late, about 6pm, most of the stores closed already, sigh :-[, no chance to listen to the set. If i'm not wrong, you mentioned that MA RS series w/o sub is ~2.5k, isn't it? How is the sound quality for both movie and music? A few questions: 1) Will a DVD player enough if i don't buy CD player? will it be a waste that I buy nice speakers but w/o a good player? 2) would like to buy a HDMI HD or BD DVD player but not sure where to get HD/BD DVDs, seems quite rare in singapore market, right? 3) is Onkyo 605 a good amp? I know HDMI wise it's great with 1.3a version but only 2 ports. what about the rest of the features as compared to Yamaha 2600 or Denon 2807?
ical Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 As petetherock suggested, Quad 12L ($1150) for the front is more than enough since you're using it with a good sub. But to factor in the cost of a good stands, you don't actually save much.

Of course a CD player will be better for stereo listening. Don't have to buy a brand new one. Just look around for a nice used set in Buy/Sell. But I'll suggest you to stick to your DVD player for a while. Get to know what it lacking then you'll know what you want. 2. PS3. A blueray player and game console. Value for money. 3. Can't help you much on this as I've lost track of receivers. However if for me, I'll go for Yamaha 2600. Well made, looks and sound good in both movie and music.

In fact I'm interested in media hard disk players like LIMHD200i which can play movies from hard disk up to 1080p and get HDMI connections. Yamaha 2600 seems a good buy though a bit more expensive as compared to Onkyo 605. Anyway, my LCD TV not ready yet, neither is my HD players, i have enough time to think about which amp to get... :)
petetherock Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 A pair of atacama SE 24 stands were going for 1xx$ A PS3 makes a good Hi Def player and CD source, but is only code 3, an Oppo 981 costs about 4xx or 2xx for the 970 If you have gone through my posts then you will know I have written reviews on the MA RS series (costs 1260 for the RS6 for example) and it was partnered with the SR 8001 (1600) and the SR 12 The Onkyo 605 is a budget amp. Its main attraction is the 1.3HDMI. The Quads or MA can do with a better amp. If you get the 12l or RS 1, you save enough (even with stands) to get something a little better, eg 7001 Marantz, Denon 2807, 805 etc As for which sounds better, your ears will tell bro. Do go through the suggested systems thread bro, Ushers are also a good choice and cost less (fronts and centres together <1.6K) BTW the latest yammy is the 2700 which is going cheap now that many are coverting ot the Onykos
Guest jonlee Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 Get a ps3 + 805 if budget allows. If not, get a ps3 + 605. Though there are always advantages in getting a better amp, but if u have already heard the quad + 605 and it sounds nice to u, it will be sufficient for now. For receivers, I would normally never recommend old series as they are already "obsolete" the moment u get them. Since u are buying new, always good to future proof by getting the latest series. Check out the sales forum. Many are already upgrading their 2700 with the onkyo 875. The current batch of onkyos (605, 805, 875) are really very value for $$$. If u don't plan to order dvds overseas, the code3 ps3 is sufficient. If u plan to order from overseas, u should be ordering bluray/hd dvds instead of standard dvds nowadays. After many upgrading cycles, I now firmly believe in spending a bit more out front so that u will be happy with your system for 2 years. Else u might end up upgrading within months (especially when u are visiting this forum).
