simic Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Anyone using Behringer / Crown or some other pro amps in their HT setup? Seems like a cost effective way to get mega watts amps. But based on the forums that I browsed so far, it seems to be quite a controversial topic. Any brothers with first hand knowledge here?
Jag Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 I can qualify to answer that. Pro-audio power amps are designed for pure megawatt so as to pump out music as loud as possible in large venues. HT doesn't need that. Now the diff between pro audio and HT amps is that the circuit design is more refined in HT amps. This means less distortion, more control and lower noise floor. I did consider using pro-audio amps in my HT, but I decided not to because they generate alot of heat, are noisy(due to the fans in the pro-audio amp), and they are don't sound as refined HT amps. You may feel that the ultimate quest is to get mega watts..... But the real question is how many watts is enough. IMO, 200W is a good high number target to strive for. For a spkr of 89db/W, it onli takes 100W+ to deliver 110dBs. For HT, the real quest is to get good quality watts. Pro-audio is designed for megawatts, and in that quest quality takes a back seat. HT amps balances quality and quantity. Audiophile is designed for quality, with quantity suffering. That was my first hand experience in a nutshell.
simic Posted August 7, 2007 Author Posted August 7, 2007 so still looks like back to square 1. reason why i was asking is that I'm using maggies which are 4ohm and 85db/w. my puny xr55 can drive these guys for normal scenes, but dont feel shiok enuf when the dynamic material kicks in. pro amps seemed to be cheap way to get 200+W to drive these buggers i read abt the fan noise problems. its really that bad huh? louder than the X1 projector I'm using?
Jag Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 The fan does get noisy IF you are sensitive to fan noise. Then again, you can mod the fan voltage so that it spins slowly and quietly. How lower quality the SQ will be depends on you liao. Very subjective and varies from person to person. Why not give Crown a go? If you not sure or dun want to spend too much $$$ to try a pro-audio amp, can always try behringer....500W Reference-Class Studio Power Amplifier. Confirm can use one.......... you just need to find out if you like it or not. ;)
SiriuslyCold Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 cant use it with a XR55 - doesnt have pre-outs
