blackburn Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 You own a projector and love watching movies. You watch these movies on screens measured in three-digits. Your friends bother you all the time and want to watch movies. Question: Could you possibly go "back" to, say, a 42-inch flat panel or 50" plasma and stay happy? http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=885162
desray Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Very interesting topic for discussion IMO... For me, I will tend to look at things at a different perspective for this 'particular' discussion. I strongly disagreed with the sentence, '...once we saw the big picture, there's no turning back...' But rather it depends on the types of content shown/broadcast which will ultimately determines the 'type' of Display to 'use'... For instance, I will rather watch a normal standard definition TV programmes on a Plasma or LCD or maybe even CRT than using Projector to watch it. Reason is simple, quality is not there! Why 'torture' yourself to even look at the quality which you know well in your mind Projector will only 'amplify' the flaws therein...?! On the other hand, if the future holds that High Definition will be the de facto way of broadcasting programmes...then it makes sense that Projector will be a better way to go about...Hell! I will even make sure that my Living Room will use a Projector and nothing else...But we know better that its not gonna happen. Let's face it, the amount of work and aesthetic considerations that one will put into just ain't worth the effort. Elegance and user-friendliness should be the way to go about...when you want to watch a movie or even catch a news broadcast in Hi-Def signal...it should be as easy as powering up the On/Off button on the Display itself and use the remote to channel surf. Conclusion, yes I will have 'no problem' going back to and fro between using my Projector and a normal LCD/Plasma TV...
Quest88 Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 yeah. same. although i like the size of projector, i use a lcd tv regularly for PC and anime. projector is for quite a fixed purpose.. mainly for movies or games. just cos it takes time to set up. mood also different cos it will be in the dark. but i think threadstarter's point is whether can give up projector totally n just live with a smaller screen. i think i can. :) 50" isn't really that small.
petetherock Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 I gave up my Infocus 4805 displaying a 90" image for my Pioneer 507 50" Regrets? not really, the viewing angle has not gotten that small, and its so convenient to pick up the remote and turn it on, sit back and enjoy, no hassle, day or night, unlike my projector. Been to a few brothers' homes and seen their HD PJs, its more grand, but I also note the startup times, the costs (more than my panel) and the difficulty in enjoying SD TV on them. Like desray said, full HD is more enjoyable on them
wind30 Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 totally give up projector? never. I still feel that the projector for movies is still the way to go. Even 50" plasma is a little too small I feel. Besides the dark ambience really make watching the movie much better. Having said that, can I totally give up my plasma? Also never. You also need a plasma to watch TV and drama serials. Easy convenient to watch. I feel they serve different purposes and are not interchangeable.
dannyhgt Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Anyone considered a Sony XBR2 70" RPTV? I am juggling between this and upgrading the PJ.
Phil1624705739 Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Here's my point of view on type of display for different materials. Movie: Think big screen! SD or HD, projector is the way. HD broadcast: Convenience rules so flat panels got my vote. SD broadcast: Low-resolution and 4:3 aspect makes good ole CRT the best option. So.. I own a PJ, an LCD and 2 CRTs. That's me of course. Phil

Too big and way too expensive. Lets try out with DVR first. If you are fine with the Pio, I will call them up tomorrow for a review unit. Phil
