synthesis1624705793 Posted August 4, 2007 Posted August 4, 2007 Hi Just like to share. Recently bought this Electricity Power Energy Monitor from Ebay for <SGD 60 inclusive shipping. http://search.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQfgtpZ1QQfrppZ25QQsassZbadboy1000QQssPageNameZMERCQ5fVICQ5fRSEEQ5fPr4Q5fPcNQ5fQ5fSI Nice device to have if you are curious to check how much our individual device consumes electricity. Here's the power consumption (W) of some equipment in my house. Marantz AVR 63 Hsu Subwoofer 13 Rotel 6ch power amplifier 27 LG 42” Plasma 200 Philips DVDP 23 Consonance CDP 13 EL 84 mini tube amplifier 110 Dared MP5 amplifier 16 SCV analog set top box 13 SCV digital set top box 9 PC 140 17 Samsung LCD monitor 27 20” Samsung CRT 58 Rice cooker 605 Wall fan 50 Microwave oven 1600 Note: Plasma power consumption varies depending on the scene brightness. Blank screen draws about 110W. Solid state hifi equipment doesn't draw much power. Tube amp draws more power. We all know that ;) Stupid SCV set top boxes draw the same power whether it is on standby or in operation! Switch off the plug if you want to save electricity. PC still draws more than 100W when idle. Wall fan consumption depends on the speed. Hope that gives general idea of our typical power consumption. :)
eggz Posted August 4, 2007 Posted August 4, 2007 Woah that microwave oven is a monster, I always thought they were pretty efficient for cooking. Never imagine I"ll see a microwave suck more power than a rice cooker!
Phil1624705739 Posted August 4, 2007 Posted August 4, 2007 Can you try the fridge and washing machine too? Phil
zapp1624705742 Posted August 4, 2007 Posted August 4, 2007 Woah that microwave oven is a monster, I always thought they were pretty efficient for cooking. Never imagine I"ll see a microwave suck more power than a rice cooker! u must take it into perspective - how long is the appliance on for? and is it always at its max load? etc etc...usually we heat food up max 3-5mins
synthesis1624705793 Posted August 4, 2007 Author Posted August 4, 2007 Can you try the fridge and washing machine too? Phil Fridge draws only 9W when idle, not sure how much during cooling. Tried to open the door but the cooler didn't kick in. Washing machine power consumption varies depending on operation. Full speed spin with no load draws 300W. Will try to measure the KWH for one washing cycles.
synthesis1624705793 Posted August 5, 2007 Author Posted August 5, 2007 What about air con? Don't know yet. The plug is different. Need to find adaptor.

petetherock Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Bro great device, when you tire of it, maybe you can sell it to me or lend it for a test of my amp and sub. :)
synthesis1624705793 Posted August 5, 2007 Author Posted August 5, 2007 Pete, No, I don't think I will sell it. Just like SPL meter, though I can count by fingers how many times I used it, it's inexpensive anough to keep. Your amp and sub combined should be less than 100W. :) Relax, Not too worry about standby. Only my plasma shows 3W. The rest (except those stupid SCV set top boxes) still shows 0W or probably it's just below 1W or maybe the meter is not so sensitive at this range. However, those power strips that have light indicators easily show 2W per light.
synthesis1624705793 Posted August 5, 2007 Author Posted August 5, 2007 so they dun sell this device locally? Tried to look in SLT but couldn't find one. Anyway it's cheap enough to buy from Ebay and the seller is quite responsive in dealing.
Guest jonlee Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 How did u pay him? Seems like he doesn't accept paypal. Quite troublesome to do a TT transfer. Tried to look in SLT but couldn't find one. Anyway it's cheap enough to buy from Ebay and the seller is quite responsive in dealing.
blackburn Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 since such readings need only to be taken once, may i suggest that if the owner is agreeable, charge a small fee for the use of the gadget. so all can take their own readings and the owner can recoup the initial costs of the gadget as well ;) what do you think ?
synthesis1624705793 Posted August 6, 2007 Author Posted August 6, 2007 How did u pay him? Seems like he doesn't accept paypal. Quite troublesome to do a TT transfer. I sent bank draft bought from post office and sent by registered mail. Actually he can accept paypal but there will be small fee (still worth it). I sent the payment then he informed me. Well I was rushing to send the payment due to some circumstances, otherwise I would have paid by Paypal. It cost around GBP18 inclusive shipping and Paypal fee. No need MO lah, not worth the trouble for the organiser. ;)
Guest francis woo Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 I Wud be interesting to check out the water heaters. Understand they are real power hungry creatures..... :)
synthesis1624705793 Posted August 6, 2007 Author Posted August 6, 2007 It is a power hungry creature, but the problem is that it is switched, not plugged. You need to modify it some way.
Spunky Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 One of the real elect suckers is halogen lightings. 1 pc already 50W...usually need about 4-5 to light up a small area. That's 200/250W!! A lot of people forget the iron...it's quite a electricity sucker, ard 2000W :o!!
Chowbotak Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 One of the real elect suckers is halogen lightings. 1 pc already 50W...usually need about 4-5 to light up a small area. That's 200/250W!! I use only 4 at a time. Does dimming help? ;D
synthesis1624705793 Posted August 7, 2007 Author Posted August 7, 2007 A lot of people forget the iron...it's quite a electricity sucker, ard 2000W :o!! Your iron rating printed on the iron is quite accurate. But the power is cut off once the temperature is reached. My washing machine draws much less than 1kWH for each washing cycle; still less than 10 cents per wash. My plasma probably costs me around 30 cents a day. ;)
Bernie7 Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 PC still draws more than 100W when idle. Is that the power consumption during switched-off standby? Save the planet! :o
Spunky Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 100W is like 3 x 32W circular tubes!! That wld be VERY bright is use for lighting instead!! ;D
Jedi R Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 Good info... Hope I can get one in Singapore... Do share if anyone of you manage to find one in Singapore...
synthesis1624705793 Posted August 13, 2007 Author Posted August 13, 2007 Is that the power consumption during switched-off standby? Save the planet! :o That is when windows is running but no other processing. Go get yourself the equipment. ;) Good info... Hope I can get one in Singapore... Do share if anyone of you manage to find one in Singapore... Good luck! Ebay is quite cheap and the seller is quite responsive.
Bernie7 Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 Could you check the power consumed when a desktop PC and laptop is on standby (PC off, mains on)? Most of us leave our PCs on standby without a thought. I've heard the power wasted is quite significant. Thks!
