louco73 Posted July 29, 2007 Posted July 29, 2007 I have an old dual PIII 8xx (can't remember ;) ) PC with 512 MB, Sound Blaster Live, Network Card, on a Tyan motherboard. I had 3 hard drives in there, 15GB, 40GB and 120 GB. It still works quite well and used to be on 24x7 doing SETI@Home for ages. It is noisy compared to my super new server and HTPC, but back in it's day I'm sure it is just normal. The problem is that I have 3 other computers in my house, 4 if you include my work laptop ;D. I really have no use for it any more, even though it is working fine. What have you done? Sold it to people at Sim Lim, sold the parts online, given it to charity (it's a bit too old for that I think). Oh, there is no Windows license with this, it was running Linux ;).
weibchen Posted July 29, 2007 Posted July 29, 2007 http://forums.vr-zone.com/forumdisplay.php?f=10 Why don't sell it for cheap here. if you find it too much hassle, just post WT give.
petetherock Posted July 29, 2007 Posted July 29, 2007 I don't its too old for charity really, why not try Salvation Army or say Hiding place? cheers P
Jedi R Posted July 29, 2007 Posted July 29, 2007 It's really old... you can reuse the Harddisk... I doubt it can run Windows XP.... The prcessor is too slow....
sonofdbn Posted July 29, 2007 Posted July 29, 2007 If you have kids, I've found that many educational kids' games are designed more for Win98 than XP; the PC should be fine for that, and you don't need a fancy graphics card. The challenge might be finding Win98, and it's a pain to install. The PC should also happily run Win2K, which I'm running on my PII.

It ran Windows 2000 for a while no problems. Anyway, it's not about finding a use for it. It's how to get rid of it. Good ideas for others, but not in my case as I really have no use for it. petetherock Posted July 29, 2007 Posted July 29, 2007 Hiding place and the charitable places may just canabalise them or add a donated Windows, but anything workable is good, at least they can sell the parts Cheers FYI I had a PIII which ran XP ok too
hkail Posted July 29, 2007 Posted July 29, 2007 If you are donating to charity, can consider the following. http://www.passiton.org.sg :)
Quest88 Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 im not sure where but i remember that you could donate to some organisations. they even go to ur place to collect. there was this company that specialise in recycling also - they melt down the components like gold. see if i can find the links later. P3 should still be ok.. i remember i wanted to give away my P1 and even charity dun accept! they stated was because they dun wanna end up with alot of spare parts for old systems, which makes sense. minimum at that time was P2.
varun1624705824 Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 You could consider giving it away through a post on SgFreecycle - this is the Singapore "branch" of the global freecycling effort. Quite a few people there asking for used PCs or notebooks and quite a few giving them away too. Look for "sgfreecycle" on groups.yahoo.com Hope this helps. - V.
