Desperado Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 Thinking of moving of my HT from living room to a dedicated room (size is 4 m x 3.5 m). And at the same time, want to replace my pull down screen to a fix screen, (tired of the waves from the pull down screen). Need suggestion on: - There are windows on the screen side wall (stretching from right wall to side wall). What is the best way to install the fix screen? - Maximum screen size of screen for comfortable viewing (current thinking is 100", too big?). - I understand that for screen wall and ceiling, the preferred color is black, what about the side wall color? - Any good contractor that can do the frame installation, relocation of the cables, addition of power points, lightning and painting of the walls? Thanks in advance.
Quest88 Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 Some thoughts: 1) Put a curtain? Don't really understand the layout or concern. The windows should be covered up whenever the projector is playing, no? 2) Screensize should be based on your seating distance. If you sit say, 2.5-3m away, I think 100 inch is fine. Everyone also got different 'comfortable range'. Actually most of the time the projector throw distance will stop you from having a 'too large' image. Since you have a projector setup already, you should know what looks right to you. 3) IMO no difference. I know many users who have white walls/ceilings. Black is probably just to cut down light reflections if it bothers you that much. Same as the floor. Qn 4 I can't advise. :)
Desperado Posted July 19, 2007 Author Posted July 19, 2007 Thanks Quest for the reply, The concern on the screen is how to put it up. Use a standing frame to hold the fix screen, or use some sort of metal bar and hang/attach the screen to it. Another questions, And how to prevent light spill from the top of the curtain during daytime watching? Phil, I understand from previous post that you have almos the same issues, can you share what you did to your HT room?
blackburn Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 Another questions, And how to prevent light spill from the top of the curtain? try these window films, which come with varying degrees of tint. it rejects heat and radiation, keeps the room cool and allows the control of light. cheap and easy to install :) height=268http://www.singaporemirror.com/co_window2.jpg[/img]
louco73 Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 Curtains are quite cheap to get made up at a place like Spotlight in Plaza Sinagpura. I got mine made with hooks so that I could add extra blackout material if required. My suggestion, get the best material you can to block as much as possible if you intend to watch during the day. Most fixed screens come with a kit to drill the supports into the wall and hang it on those. Normally whoever you buy it from will install it for you if you are not comfortable doing this. I bought a Remaco fixed 4:3 screen from FastLogic and they installed it. I also bought an OSscreen 16:9 100" from Sound Decisions and they installed it too. I agree with Quest, 2.5m is probably the closest you want to sit for 100", but everyone is different. I don't think I would want to have a black room, but the point is to make it dark to minimize light reflections and concentrate your eyes on the screen, much like in the cinema. Paint everything black for best effect, but not exactly a nice room to walk into :). Let us know if the contractor you find is good. Someone needs to keep a list ;).
FookLai Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 Hi Blackburn, very useful info, where can I get them? blackburn Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 Hi Blackburn, very useful info, where can I get them? they are just one of the many: www.perfect.com.sg or just google for window film Thinking of moving of my HT from living room to a dedicated room (size is 4 m x 3.5 m)............. I understand that for screen wall and ceiling, the preferred color is black, what about the side wall color? with a dedicated ht room, you would want to darken the room as even a cheap infocus 4805 if properly calibrated, will give you excellent picture quality :)
Desperado Posted July 19, 2007 Author Posted July 19, 2007 Curtains are quite cheap to get made up at a place like Spotlight in Plaza Sinagpura. I got mine made with hooks so that I could add extra blackout material if required. But there should be still some light spill from the gap between the curtain and the hooks? That is what I am worry about. Most fixed screens come with a kit to drill the supports into the wall and hang it on those. Not sure how the kit looks like but with windows behind the screen, not sure how to install the support. Blackburn, is that your room? if so, can share who is the contractor? It looks really nice.
kzone Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 But there should be still some light spill from the gap between the curtain and the hooks? That is what I am worry about. u can use the railing type instead.. but it should be on the ceiling instead of wall.. will have minimal light spill if any at all... if want to be even sure, can make an L box to hide the railing.... so that the rail will be in between the wall & L box..
louco73 Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 But there should be still some light spill from the gap between the curtain and the hooks? That is what I am worry about. Kzone answered that. My biggest problem is actually light spill from the bottom reflecting off the marble floor! Not sure how the kit looks like but with windows behind the screen, not sure how to install the support. Ok, now you are trouble. I didn't quite understand where the screen and windows were from your original post. I think you need to post a photo :)
kzone Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 Koma & some folks here have screens on the window side of the screen too.. can wait for them to response or pm them...
petetherock Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 Bro I use blackout curtains almost right up to the ceiling and touches the floor, my room can be totally dark, you can get dark blue or black - which can be depressing. You can see my pics in the setup thread. Most people who do aircons, etc can do plugs, PM bro ks for a technician or ask NTUC IF you can't get any, then I can give you the contact to my aircon guy.
koma Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 my window is juz behind my screen n i cover it all up with those black stickers so no light comin in at all and my whole rm is painted in a very dark grey shade includin my ceiling quite a gloomy look if u ask me :P alternatively u can stick those thin acoustic foams behind if u got a fixed screen will help dampen out the sounds btwn ur fixed screen n the lobang frm the windows Koma & some folks here have screens on the window side of the screen too.. can wait for them to response or pm them...

And can you elaborate how you fix you screen from the "lobang"? Here is the sketch of the window, where the red rectangular is where the screen is to be mounted. The top of the screen cannot be secured since there are glass windows.
koma Posted July 25, 2007 Posted July 25, 2007 black stickers can juz get frm any sticker shop that does it for cars quite cheap onli a few bucks per meter. juz spray soap water on the glass when stickin on so u can adjust. then leave it to dry n it will stick on liao.for me me screen juz nice the brackets can clear the top n bottom of the window. there will be a lobang in btwn the screen and the window juz fill it up with some cheap foam can liao better than leavin it empty where echo can be generated. ur situation abit leceh but still can be done. the bottom brackets for the screen can be sreced to the walls straight. the top part maybe need to make some 'L' shape brackets so that ur bracket for the screen can attached to tis L bracket then tis L bracket can clear the window n attach to the wall on top of the window u got the idea? if u find it ugly can always make a curtain to cover the brackets n do it for the sides too if u wanna do the top makes it look nicer n have a cinema feel. hope tis idea can help u bro ;) Where did you buy the black stickers?
