HeavenKnows Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 Hi, bros out there! I noticed that when I am playing a movie or concert DVD, the sound can suddenly disappear (or the speakers can go silent) for just about "half a tick" and then come back again! It does not always happen on the same track... And it does not happen often but it is still worrying and irritating. I'm wondering, - is there something wrong with my amp?? Too hot?? - is there something wrong with my DVD player?? - or is it the cables or mains??
Relax Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 I have this problem on my marantz CDP. Sometimes but not all the times, the sound will just "dropout" for a second or so. Also notice that the display will diappeared momentarily. So I guess my problem had to be the CDP. So does your DVDP has any display in front like my CDP?? If yes, maybe u want to check whether the display disappear too! rgds
blackburn Posted July 17, 2007 Posted July 17, 2007 the sound can suddenly disappear (or the speakers can go silent) for just about "half a tick" and then come back again! It does not always happen on the same track... i had this problem recently and realised that my optical cable was twisted and entangled at the back of the rack with some other cables. after reconnecting the optical cable properly, the player is back to normal operations

My DVDP has a display but I didn't really pay attention to the display ... whether it disappears or not. Guess it happens so quickly and suddenly, it is difficult to catch. :-\ My AV Amp has a display which does seem to indicate that the signal from the DVD is still present. Otherwise, it will show "NO DATA". But I'm not so sure as well since the occurance takes place in a flash, either I missed it or the drop is so quick the amp cannot detect it. :-\ So you serviced or changed your CDP and it is OK now?

Yeah, I was using optical cable previously and found that there was no sound at all. Realised that the rear of my cabinet is too cramp to accomodate an optical cable so I have changed to using a coaxial digital cable. Seems like got sound but maybe I have to check if the cables at the back are not twisted up. Cables can be such a mess of noodles!! :P

Unlike blackburn, I using analogue cable for my CDp. I can actually see the cdp led flash when this problem appeared. Problem is still around and it happened after the warranty had expired. Did not send for service, guess I'm tolerance toward this problem. But will send for service if pocket is "full".
Melvinho77 Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 I also face this problem with my Toshiba DVD player.. but only when playing music CD. The sound will drop for 2 secs than resume. Only brought this player for 2 mths. Connected with HDMI and coxial cable .. now thinking of replacing it with Oppo 981 using only HDMI for both Audio/video. My toshiba player also will hang if I switch on the TV after I switch on the player. The dvd is connect via HDMI to my reciever than HDMI out to the TV. Somehow this arrangement hangs my player. I need to switch on the TV first follow by my player for it to not hang. Strange.
zapp1624705742 Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 I get a 1 second sound off when i use Oppo 981 to my marantz 8001 using HDCD mode...
HeavenKnows Posted July 18, 2007 Author Posted July 18, 2007 Melvinho77 and zapp, that sounds to me like a power surge issue. I also have that when I switch on the kitchen lights!! :o So I got a power conditioner and it went away. Now with are power conditioner, and some heavy power cables (which does make the hi-fi sound better as well :) ), it seems like the problem is something else.
hifiluv Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 hv similiar experience with my NAD C521 cdp, it will skip a beat and then resume. it happens randomly with various CDs, so it means its the machine tat is the problm. maybe its sending out a signal...change me....change me..... he he he..... ;D
HeavenKnows Posted July 19, 2007 Author Posted July 19, 2007 Hmm,... I noticed that if I played a good quality imported R1 disc - I was playing Eagles Farewell Concert - there doesn't seem to be any skipping. The other disc I played were multi-code or R3 discs. Now I wonder if it is an issue with the printing of the DVD disc itself?! :-\
karlie Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 Don't get me started on R3 disc again... the other I was watching R3 Pan's Labyrirth (online rental). The 3/2 audio was simply created by Alliance or whatever local studio by copying the Front Channels to the Surround channels with a very high delay. The I watched It's all gone Pete Tong; the stream is marked as 3/2, but then there is absolutely no sound in the surrounds. Who said Singapore lacked creativity?
likefunyouare Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 I had this problem last night after I changed from coaxial cable to HDMI to connect the DVD to the receiver.
zapp1624705742 Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 I am starting to suspect HDMI handshake probs
HeavenKnows Posted August 6, 2007 Author Posted August 6, 2007 Hi, Guys.. Back on this again... ::) ??? I was playing Phil Collin's First Farewell Tour... an R1 DVD I asked my sister to buy from US... And then there it was again!! That one split second where the sound just disappeared!! >:( i reveresed and played the track again but then the sound did not miss a beat at all... :P ??? I'm using a Marantz DV6600 to my AVR5400 via coaxial digital cable. Could it be a cable issue??

Likewise for me, the problem sometimes don't appeared at all. And if the problem is so intermittent, recommend U pay more attention to it yourself then trying to get a repairman to look into it. try isolating the problem, maybe swapped it out and try. next time try the dvdp
Guest Assys1606 Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 I have an old Sony CD player, played without any tracking issue. I upgraded/replaced all the caps inside & there isn’t any problem. Until I replaced the existing diodes to the fast recovery types (SBYV28-200) that after playing about a CD, it hangs with the tracking number of that song freeze. One way to reset is to power off & power on again. Any experience on this one?
