Jose Mourinho believes Florent Malouda can help Chelsea regain peak form - alongside fellow winger Arjen Robben. The possibility of the two wingers playing in tandem is something that excites the Chelsea boss.

'I know that everybody is watching Florent and Robben in the same squad but you have to remember that, in my opinion, the best football we played in the last three years was when Robben and [Damien] Duff were playing together in the same team.

'So why can't Florent and Arjen play together?

Yea totally agree. It will be a competitive postion with the likes of Joe Cole, Robben, Malouda and SWP. Its goner be an exciting seasion for Chelsea  ;D I have a feeling there will be more wing play this season. There is sure to be some discontent especially with so many midfielders in the team.

no team managed by mourinho has ever played attractive football...his porto and chelski teams were all built on the same workmanlike, grinding style. does he know how to get a team to play with flair?

fergie is the opposite...he only knows how to coach a team to play with verve and adventure...when he tries to make united play conservatively, it's a disaster.

or wenger - only knows one way to play. can't even bring himself to instruct his players to play more simply when they need to.

Did you watch the first season of Mourinho in Chelsea? After Robben recovered from pre season injury, Robben and Duff did play with flair, they almost score 4 goals in every games that time. However, Robben is injury prone and so is Duff, with the introduction of Ballack and Shevcencho, they have to play the rigid 4-4-2 which as you said is a workmanlike and grinding result style.

What I meant in the thread title is with the signing of Malouda, maybe we can expect exciting time with both Robben and Malouda playing together just like Robben and Duff last time. This is pointed out by Mourinho in his interview also. (How I wish if only Duff and Robben wasnt injured when facing liverpool in the Champion league in that season...... Duff was injured, Robben played last 20 mins through injury, risking his football life in that match)

Part of the fixture list when Robben came back from Injury in Season 2004/2005:

Chelsea 4 - 0 Blackburn

West Brom 1 - 4 Chelsea

Fulham 1 - 4 Chelsea

Charlton 0 - 4 Chelsea

Chelsea 4 - 0 Newcastle

Chelsea 4 - 0 Norwich

Chelsea 4 - 2 Barcelona

Chelsea 4 - 1 Crystal Palace

Chelsea 4 - 2 Bayern Munich

Chelsea 3 - 1 Fulham

Man Utd 1 - 3 Chelsea

Yeah.... My personal favourite Chelsea team:

Peter Cech, Ashley Cole, John Terry, Cavalho, Diarra, Robben, Lampard, Makalele, Essien, Malouda, Drogba

Obviously the weakest position in Chelsea is right back, although we have Glen Johnson, Paulo Ferreira, Diarra capable of playing there. That's why the rumours link to Daniel Alves of Sevilla. Future of the team I think is Mikel for Makalele,  Joe Cole/Kalou/Wright Philips for Malouda. I see Mikel has very good potential to become world best at the holding position. Ballack and Shevechenko are the players we dont really need.

Another good combination for attacking play with Essien replacing Diarra at right back and Ballack come in for midfield:

Peter Cech, Ashley Cole, John Terry, Cavalho, Essien, Robben, Lampard, Makalele, Ballack, Malouda, Drogba

If you notice, the team I like is all wing play with flair and excitement :) Though without Shevecenko, I think Drogba will score much less goal than last season.

I hope Chelsea sells Ferreira he is the weakess link in the team and has made tons of mistake on the right back. Iam glad that Glenn Johnson is coming back after his loan spell.

Tel Ben Haim will give the added cover in the centre back position for Terry and Cavalho.

Yea Mikel has so much potential. He is such a strong player and can distribute the ball well. A good understudy to Makalele.

Dont forget about the new Paruvian striker.

Stamford Bridge manager Jose Mourinho has revealed he is to return to the 4-3-3 formation that served the former champions so well in their two Premier League title winning seasons, prior to surrendering the crown to Manchester United last year.

Chelsea had favoured the formation, which saw two advanced wingers supporting a lone striker, in previous campaigns and Joe Cole believes that it was only injury problems to vital players that enforced last season's strategic shuffle to a diamond formation.

The 25-year-old missed the majority of the last campaign through medial knee ligament damage and a fractured foot, and he was joined on the long-term injured list by fellow wingers Arjen Robben and Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Pizarro? I read him before but I think he is only in for a backup role.

Latest interview for Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck:

"Jose (Mourinho) wants us to be a little more exciting and to use our wingers. As a fan, which is what I am, I would like to see a little bit more of that."

Oddly enough, winning by decent margins doesn't mean playing with flair, it just means the team is efficient and ruthless.

One of the most boring European Cup finals I ever watched was, ironically, the 4-0 hammering Milan gave Steaua Bucharest.  Sure, there were lots of goals, but basically Milan just controlled the game, exploited the openings when they occurred and banged in 4.  Otherwise the play was dull.

In contrast, I have seen really exciting 0-0 or 1-1 games, ironically often between ManYoo and Arsenal in recent years.

very good point by armoury.

just watch thailand-australia a couple of nights ago. thailand were by far the better, more attractive team. but australia was more clinical and won the game 4-0, thanks to three late goals. considering that they were the better team on paper, all they did was pack their defence and midfield, and score on the break.

like...chelsea!

Yes, I totally agree that win by bigger margin doesnt mean playing with flair. Maybe my points didnt make well by putting the impressive result in.

What I mean is simple, Chelsea football in 2004/2005 did play with flair when both Robben and Duff playing winger on the pitch. With Malouda in couple with Robben, Chelsea Manager choose to revert back to 4-3-3  formation which might result in exciting football as per Duff and Robben. If you read his(Mourinho) interview, Chelsea Chairman(Bruce Buck) Interview and Chelsea player(Joe Cole) interview carefully you will notice it. I guess worldwide Chelsea fans would be very happy to hear the exciting football is coming.

All being say, if suddenly hit by the injury again, Mourinho might force to abandon it and maybe it doesnt work at all. We shall see, that's why I put a question mark in the thread title.

Do reply after reading carefully, dont selective quote one of the point then deny all of them... Anyway, I do wonder how many Chelsea matches will be watched by non Chelsea fans and how many people did really see the exciting football played by Duff and Robben.

ST's headline is definitely bad news for chelsea fans...Drogba has not ruled out leaving and Robben's deal with Real almost done!!

Yes, apparently they want more money for their contract. Who wouldnt want when they know their colleague like Ballack and Shevechenko's salary, even John Terry and Lampard are no exception. If they are not given what they want, maybe they will leave, less likely for Drogba and Robben has more chance since Real has been chasing him for more than 1 year already.

I've always held the opinion that Chelsea played the most attractive football when they were playing with 2 wingers. However the players' mercenary attitude never fails to amuse me. They are already well paid and enjoyed successful careers but somehow were always asking for more EVERY SEASON.

I think it is because every know Roman is rich.

Didier Drogba has issued the following statement in Chelsea Official website:

'There are incorrect media reports that I am considering leaving Chelsea. These are totally untrue. I have not given any interviews discussing this matter and I signed a new contract with the club last year.

'I have had a great three years at Chelsea and look forward to several more.'

No lah!  he probably felt he's the best player in chelsea during last season and is worthy of an increment! ;)

It would be much easier for him if there's some interest from Italy or Spain ;D  Guess his last press release is basically to invite others to come forward!
