My refrigerator decided to retire after working 8 years for me. :'(

The serviceman came to my house yesterday to check what cause it to retire. He found that the fan housed inside the compressor compartment at the back of the fridge was not spinning and therefore, cause the compressor to overheat. The fan was not spinning due to the thick dust covered around the fan and prevent it from spinning.

It costs around $400+ to replace the compressor and the fan In view of the high replacement cost, i bought a new fridge instead.

Below are some tips given by the serviceman on how to prolong the life of the fridge and save electricity:

1. remove the dust from the fan at the back of the fridge yearly (to ensure smooth spinning of the fan)

2. remove the back cover at the back of the fridge that is used to cover the compressor and fan (to provide more air ventilation)

3. have 3 inches of gap between the side wall and, left and right side of the fridge (to provide air ventilation)

4. have 6 inches of gap between the back wall and back of the fridge (to provide air ventilation)

5. set the fridge and freezer compartment temperature to minimum (not the coldest) (the minimum temperature is enough to preserve the food in the fridge compartment and the freeze the food in the freezer compartment)

6. the fridge and freezer compartment should be at least half full (for efficiency)

Hope the tips are useful to the forumers. :)

Any of you have any tips to share, please add on.

Bro

checking the seals after about 5-10 years is also useful

If they don't seal well there is constant leak and the compressor works harder.

But 10 years is a good time to swop for a more efficient model...

you are right, bro. the seals are also very important. when my wife and i were looking for the new fridge, the salesman showed us the fridge that had a better seal.

Hi DanDon, what brand are you using? My Frigidaire had been running close to 20 yrs and only replace one faulty timer, not even needed to top gas.

Broke down was IRISTON. Now change to SAMSUNG and made in Korea which has a better seal design and energy saving (with 2 ticks for energy efficiency) as claimed by the salesman.

Wow! 20 yrs. Indeed a tough fridge.

wah...like tis.... for me very jialat one.... my fridge is placed into a cut out area bounded by built in cardboards at the sides and top....

i bought over this place and as the kitchen fittings by the previous owner were still in conditions, decided to use "as it is", but had to hunt for a fridge to fit exactly into the "hole" provided.

heng heng fridge still working, into its 8th year now....phew..... :P

if i hv my way, i will tear down the built in kitchen cabinets becos it not only restrict the type of fridge i can buy but also does not allow the fridge to "breathe"... but alas...its too much trouble for now, wait until the cabinets koyak then say lah.....

Talking about fridge just got a Sumsung one for $370 at Mega.

It fit nicely into the allocated area 600 by 600. My previous Mits was more then 5 years old and was still working but i guess its about time to change one for the new homw since fridge are so cheap nowadays.

Nothing beats the old brands in durability. My father is still using ACME brand since 1987
