Don't wish to be price gouged, get the equivalent US model BDP-94HD going for US$9xx only with 5 free BD titles thrown in.  Seems like C722 may be a potential candidate since he's been poking around the 94HD's owners thread.  ;D  However, word of advice is to wait out till Profile 1.1 models are out first before considering getting a stand-alone BD player.  In the meantime, use a PS3 and sell it off later.

Hmm...then whats so great about this player?  ::)

Seems to me like the Tosh XA2 is a much better buy.

Ahh.. at least you have seen the light.  I tell you, all these bloody local distributors think we are all carrot heads that can be easily chopped.  Anyway, I have been doing my bit in advising potential buyers of BD standalone players at BD, HN, Courts and Sony Galleries to get the PS3 instead.

Don't suan me lah..  I'm just highlighting what no online or print journalist is able to mention so that the masses will benefit from having the full picture and be able to make their own educated decisions.

I think you are pushing it hard at times. Not everyone is pro-Web and is willing to go through the hassle of ordering from overseas. Other consideration is proper warranty support too. Don't always compare SG with States, it's not exactly relevant. You are looking at a puny and immature market, remember?

Lastly, I have been very objective in all my coverage. Nobody has a doubt on the high pricing of this Pioneer. There are million and one ways to pen down a thought. Cutthroat and deep pocket has more or less the same meaning, but the latter is a more subtle way to rely the message.

E.g. The title of your post "ultra cheap" is obviously carrying a very strong sense of sarcasm. Might gives people a false impression that you have an agenda against Pioneer.

Well you will be surprised that even those who are pro-web also need that helping hand to point them to the right direction.  Just look at the number of questions asked by people here who were interested to get the HD-A2/XA2 from the US tells it all.  BTW, I do understand that journalists walk a fine line when providing review on products but some reports from journalists here are so biased to the company providing the product that it just reeks of hypocrisy.  Fortunately you are not one of them lah which is why I still bother to read them.  ;)

You are right on one thing though, my titles are meant to be provocative so that it will bring people's attention to it. However, I maintain this level of consistency to all companies (remember the BDP-S1E thread) who engage in this kind of pricing behaviour.  If you feel uncomfortable about the links to your article, I will switch to using links from that other online site that claims the AE1000 pricing here is reasonable.  ;D

Anyway, let's get back on topic.  I had a good look at this player at Vivo City over the weekend.  It's piano black outer casing is a big shift in Pioneer's design style as compared to their previous flagship 989 DVD player.  Its design is quite minimialist as there are few buttons on the front panel.  Too bad I wasn't able to locate the remote to play with it further.  Unfortunately its placement in Best Denki makes it indistinguisable from any ordinary DVD player as there are no promotional materials or signs indicating to people that they are watching the next generation of video entertainment.  On this point, Sony has done a better job of promoting the S1E at the Wisma Sony Gallery.

Well.. you have to understand that we are making a living here, plus I'm one of the few journos who is an A/V enthusiast too. In that sense, it's definitely easier for me to relate compared to others. All I'm suggesting here is for you to tone down a bit instead of the usual "they though we are idiots" way of posting against the vendors. It takes two hands to clap remember? Nobody is going to nitpick if you put it in a factual way. Fewer emotions, more facts. That's the way I write.

Rest assured Pioneer and the rest are well aware of the pricing issues both for the hardware and software. I have been discussing with the industry players on these issues. You have your point of view, they have their bottom lines. If you are unwilling to pay for their asking prices, just buy from your alternative sources.

Lastly, I'm fine with you linking my article and it sure helps in driving the channel's traffic. For that, my gratitude but please consider what I'm suggesting. Being an advocate doesn't mean you have to adopt a blatant "bashing" approach.

oh no please dun do that. let's save the earth and not waste energy like that. To watch a movie on PS3 for 2 hrs is like using ur rice cooker for 2 hrs ... 340w power my friend  ;D To be a good earth citizen I'll buy something that uses 50w only.  ;)

See Phil I come and support you again.

Btw in HK there is a promotion right now to get a LX70 at HK$9999 (U must buy the 1080p plasma or something like that).  So I think the bottom line price is probably more closer to that.  Pio's players traditionally have a 20-25% MSRP street diff so I still have hope for a better pricing.  I'm willing to pay additional 3-400 over the Sony for its home gallery function.  I think $1800 will be a nice spot for a premium product.

Btw2 I got this feeling the S1E is also built by Pio same as the LX70 sans the network/home gallery function.  Do you think so ?

Aya.. Jeff also complains about PS3 one lar.

And I’m getting real tired of its noise level.

The only time I can’t hear the roaring fan was when I’m playing games or watching “loud” movie. E.g. Black Hawk Down.

Actually I don't know how come you have so much issues with the PS3 noise level.  I have two sets, one from HK and one local and neither of them has given me any problems even when using it during godly hours.  Me thinks the fan in your PS3 is faulty and probably needs to be sent for servicing.

Jon, actually your CRV probably guzzles more energy in one month than the PS3 does in one lifetime.  ;D

Remember I have another PS3 in the Lab. Probably mine is using another batch of fans which maybe noisier than other. NEVERTHELESS, Sony did not specify either operating noise level or specs for their fans so I seriously doubt they will entertainment me anyway. Just my luck I guess.

Well no harm contacting them about it.  It may be a known issue in which they have a fix for.

halo to all bros, from wat i hear from pioneer, the sony s1e is indeed made by pioneer.reason for the difference in prices is becos of components inside it.sony s1e is based on 1st gen pioneer blu-ray player(think is bhp1 or something like tat).whereas the lx70 is totally new upgraded version.n btw,the pioneer lx70 is region free for dvds.some to all bros out there,no worries for ur regular r1-r6 dvds.mi workin in tis line.quite close to pioneer staffs.so noe a little bit.juz 2 share my views.

Thanks for the info.  Would it be possible for you to actually test the Region free capability of the Pioneer as the bros here were smoked before by Toshiba when they claimed that their HD-E1 was region free as well and it turned out otherwise.

Shaqqy, can you verify if LX70's remote is backlit-ed?

If so, it'll have that little edge (backlit + support IR learning remotes) over PS3. Thks.
