Jagdpanzer Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 I watched a Korean movie in the plane for the first time yesterday. It was titled something like 200 pound beauty and the acting and story was pretty good, not to mention drop dead beauty of Korean actress. ;D Now I understand all these craze about Korean films recently. As I am not familiar with Korean films, can anybody recommend me the top 15 must watch flims so that I can start hunting around in rental shops.
naglfar Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 Here are some of the more popular ones: My Sassy Girl JSA But here are some of my favourites: Oldboy Sympathy for Mr Vengeance Sympathy for Lady Vengeance
petetherock Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 Try: Il Mare My wife is a Gangster Heaven and Earth There is one more about two brothers who went to the Korean war, nice story plus v cute girls who act well :)
jayson1624705825 Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 Try: There is one more about two brothers who went to the Korean war, nice story plus v cute girls who act well :) you mean BROTHERHOOD(Taegukgi) Marry the Mafia Hi Dhrama also not bad
xbfloater Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 Hi, I'm trying to watch all Son Ye-Jin's movies below: 1. Art of Seduction 2. Moments To Remember 3. Crazy Young Love 4. The Classic But the last 2 DVDs seem to be very difficult to find, even if I am willing to compromise to VCD... Hope someone could suggest a good place to hunt for rental/purchase... TIA! Cheers, xbfloater
yellowhandman Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 bittersweet life...it's a gangster movie, quite violent, but ultimately very moving...
YANG Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 you mean BROTHERHOOD(Taegukgi) TAEGUKGI is available in 3 version in local scene. The worst quality one is the local release by POHKIM, check out for the big red pulisher's logo at the side or the back of the package, you won't miss it. AVOID AT ALL COST !!! U.S release by CTHV is a double disc release, with loads of special featurettes subtitled in english. Presented in DD5.1 and clean picture clearity...but looses out to the HK Dir.CUT single disc release which packed with both DTS-ES and DD5.1 korean tracks. Both R1 and HK release available at HMV with the price tag of $23 and $10 respectively. When you buy korean movies, look out for HK releases, which is much more better than the local produce. Go to laserflair frequently for the latest titles.
petetherock Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 There is another I recommend, jayson can you help again :) A bachelor goes to Russia or Ubekistan or something and meets a guide who trains them in courting the local Koreans who migrated there, but he falls in love with the guide who is staying there illegally. The guide is very sweet too :)
Heng Posted June 24, 2007 Posted June 24, 2007 I heartily recommend 'The Host' (esp if u like monster flick) !!! :P
Jagdpanzer Posted June 24, 2007 Author Posted June 24, 2007 Thanks guys. As I will be watching them on big screen, picture quality is important. I prefer feel good Korean genre then violent genre.
Guest panda1624705843 Posted June 25, 2007 Posted June 25, 2007 Here are some of the more popular ones: My Sassy Girl JSA But here are some of my favourites: Oldboy Sympathy for Mr Vengeance Sympathy for Miss Vengeance Where to buy "Oldboy" in Singapore, i thought this movie is banned here? or you buy it online? ;p A total original idea ... despite of the violence & sexual sicko, this movie deserves thumbs up!
wind30 Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 the 200 pound beauty is very nice right? loved that show. The other two great korean show is 1) the classic. This is REALLY good. It REALLY managed to do a classic love story without being too boring and cliche. The cinematography, acting, plot and everything makes the show very errr... classic. 2) a moment to remember. This is not bad too but not as good as 1. If you have time for dramas, you should catch, "I am sorry, I love you".
Jedi R Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 I am surprise so many man watch Korean show esp. the love story kind.... hahaha... 200 pound beauty is very nice.... the soundtrack is decent too....
xbfloater Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 Hi all, I've managed to source all Son Ye Jin's movies now & just watched "Art of Seduction" last nite. Very fun show! Jagdpanzer, I'm not sure if this is one of the top 15 K-movies but if you know this actress who usually do sad sad love stories, then you should see her completely throw away her image & go crazy (& sexy) in this movie. The other only comedy she acted in is "Crazy Young Love". Wind30, It seems like you're reading my mind. I've intended to watch the 2 old movies & drama you'd mention. I wanted to see Seo Ji Young (who sang most of the songs in Summer Scent) in that K-drama. But could u tell us what so nice of this show? Seems able to rent only the VCD version, not DVD... Her new 2007 album got great songs too. If you guys are interested, check out "Hey Boy" & "Love For Me Is" MVs in YouTube. Highly recommended. Sorry, a tad OT... =) JediR, I've the ans for you: Pretty (Natural/Enhanced) Korean actresses! My fave now is Son Ye Jin. She has this naturally beautiful yet sweet look that does not seem enhanced... =) Lee Hyo Ri is another hot K star but she does look very enhanced. Check out her "Scolded" MV, which seems like another nice love story movie... Sorry for getting a tad OT. Enjoy the movies and hope we could share our comments/feedback, OK? Cheers, xbfloater
Jagdpanzer Posted June 26, 2007 Author Posted June 26, 2007 What do you guys mean by "natural and not seem enhanced". Don't tell me all these actress went under the knife like in 200 pound beauty.
petetherock Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 1/3 to 1/4 of women in Korea do eyelid surgery for example :) BTW do pick good quality pressings of your intended discs, otherwise the cheapo ones can be pretty shoddy. What do you guys mean by "natural and not seem enhanced". Don't tell me all these actress went under the knife like in 200 pound beauty.
Jedi R Posted June 27, 2007 Posted June 27, 2007 What do you guys mean by "natural and not seem enhanced". Don't tell me all these actress went under the knife like in 200 pound beauty. In Korea, it is very common for the ladies to go for enhancement through surgery.... Natural means no surgery, original packaging....

BTW, the show "I am sorry, I love u" is not acted by Sun Yizhen. Sun's movies like "the classic" and "a moment to remember" are all very nice but her dramas are not good. Or at least that is what my drama queen wife tells me. We have both her drama's like summer scent and the recent one "lian ai shi dai" or something. "I am sorry, I love u" is directed by winter sonata's director. The plot is so so but there are very good chemistry between the male and female lead. Really good and the camera angles and scenes are very beautiful. For winter sonata, it is easy for the director to make it beautiful as snowscapes always look quite good. In "I am sorry, I love u" most the scenes are urban settings and I am quite amazed by the skill of the director in making the show look so beautiful. The songs are fantastic too. My wife has watched like 20 korean dramas I think, and her favourite is "Gong", "I am sorry, I love u". "The wedding" by zhang nala is also not bad. My personal favourite is "Full house" and "I am sorry, I love u". And I think a FEW actress did not go for plastic sugery, one of them is song hui qiao
FookLai Posted June 27, 2007 Posted June 27, 2007 Song Hui Qiao is the best! I like Full House very much also, along with Paris Lover. My favourite korea movies are Shiri, My Sassy Gal, Joint Security Area.... Fook Lai
Jagdpanzer Posted July 7, 2007 Author Posted July 7, 2007 Rented My Sassy Girl and the comedy was really good and is a keeper, and I like the way the camera angle at the actress. But the dvd quality was so so. Wonder where is the best place to buy properly pressed Korea dvd.It seems most shops stops stocked VCDs. Watched My GF is a Gangster 3 and I did not know ShuQi starred Its the worst Korea flim I watched so far.typical HK stuff extolling triads.Nearly left the cinema.
petetherock Posted July 7, 2007 Posted July 7, 2007 If you like Sassy Girl, do try the Il Mare and The Follow On, same actor and actress, but she is a policewoman and he is a teacher - Can't remember title :( Rented My Sassy Girl and the comedy was really good and is a keeper, and I like the way the camera angle at the actress. InnocentBlood Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 OLD BOY!!!! a jaw dropping movie that redefined korean cinema!!! yes agreed. the entire trilogy should be seen back to back for maximum impact. speaking of Old Boy, there's a definite R1 version that comes in a tin packaging that will remind you of the Band of Brothers tin ;D
