petetherock Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 Friends I was chatting with a friend and reminsicing about the good ol' CRTs so I thought I might ask: Which was the best TV you owned / knew about? I always dreamed of owning the top of the line Sony Wega CRT, it costs about 3k plus for a 34", weighed a ton, was made in Japan but the quality was fantastic! Even the sound quality was very decent. P PS: if you know of places to get such large TVs still, please let me know cheers
bloob Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 Ah Memories..... I sold off my old Sony WEGA ES 34" CRT a few months ago when I shifted house. It was an amazing set that when paired with my Pioneer DV-S737 DVD player via component input, the colours were rich and bright, and with DRC-MF-100, flicker free and sharp. Letter box or pan-scan, it was easy to setup, and I enjoyed watching DVDs on it. When I got it 7 years ago, it was then top of the range WEGA, featuring S-Video and 2 Component Inputs, more inputs on the side for video cam, and controls on the top surface for very easy access. Lots of controls available to adjust colour, brightness, contrast, sharpness, SRS audio, Trusurround, virtual surround, screen size and format, DRC-100 and DRC-1250. It was an HD Ready CRT in many ways ;D Oh and it did weight in at about 100kgs, and I had to get the designer to make an extra strong AV console table top. ;D
zapp1624705742 Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 Mine is a 20 yr old (still WORKING mine you :p) Sony Trinitron 29inch CRT lol...it has been with me since the LD days, gone thru hours and hours of console playing from Nintendo, Super Nintendo, SEGA, PS1, PS2....amazing quality
louco73 Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 Two Sony's a 28" widescreen I got in Ireland in 2001. Still working here in Singapore, but needs a video player or DVR to convert the TV signal to the right PAL format ;). The second is a 68 cm 4:3 that my Dad is still using in Australia. Power supply died once, but great pic and sound.
petetherock Posted June 19, 2007 Author Posted June 19, 2007 Funny how so far, all the great TVs are Sonys... Sadly I don't think the current LCD crop will be mentioned in such hallowed tones :) I think in years to come though the Pioneer plasmas will have such a reputation. "they don't make them like they used to" :)
game_goondu Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 mine is toshiba 34" CRT. still using it, coming to 6 years. very pleased with the quality... still remember that i bought it for $2.7k. at that time the equivalent sony 34" CRT was selling about $3.5k. so ended up buying the toshiba and save $800.
whowillbe Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 does CRT projector qualify???? mine would be the Vidikron Vision One... ;D
Knight_Rider Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 Still using my 36" pixel plus PHILIPS widescreen. ;D
petetherock Posted June 19, 2007 Author Posted June 19, 2007 Actually I thought there will be more Philips pixel plus owners, there were really good, especially the G2 ones
InnocentBlood Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 Still using my 36" pixel plus PHILIPS widescreen. ;D this is the one that i am using also ;D
wen1624705757 Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 I am still hving a 34" Sony in my parents place in KL ... this shld be the 18th year we are using it, main purpose now is for my nephew to watch cartoon only. Pairing it with some china brand DVD player.. The screen is not flat, bit its flat frm top to bottom but curve horizontally.. its a trinitron but i think its the earlier series. The speakers is external so can change to a better speakers (which i pair with a pioneer "box" speakers i got frm the car). quality now can see color faded.. but still pretty sharp
InnocentBlood Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 the longevity of a CRT TV is indeed amazing :) i am having a hard time convincing potential buyers of the difference between an LCD TV and my CRT widescreen TV since i am currently trying to sell off my philips pixel plus.
DIRTRUN Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 Hi, Just chipping in for de good ole crt... I have 2 still running models : 1. Sharp 29in model( with Tele text feature ) about 10yrs old and still running great, paired wif a pioneer dvdp(via s-video) wif Yammy avr running for bedroom HT; and 2. A newer (abt 5yrs old) Flatscreen JVC 34in - 60hz model(cos couldnt afford de ps model which cost a bomb then) - tis was used in de main HT(now running 720p pj) - run components from another pioneer dvdp - now in storage cos too lazy to change de sharp 29in wif tis(bloody heavy la)... Both running great and pics are still good, de sharp has gone a few rounds wif de repairman(usually de ic for de start function) and de jvc has been trouble free... So to me, de new flat panels need to prove tat it can look and be as durable as de old crt, for me to look at them, at least in de short term... Meantime I ll enjoy my dvds wif de Pj, Dirtrun
bloob Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 I'm still running a 21" Philips Pixel Plus CRT in my bedroom 8) Anyone remembers those Panasonic GAOO widescreen projection CRTs?
Guest francis woo Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 My wife is still watching and taping her cantonese serials on the 4 yrs old 29" Philips pixel plus and occasionally on a 26 yrs old 13" Sony Trinitron in one of the bedrooms... :)
petetherock Posted June 19, 2007 Author Posted June 19, 2007 Anyone has one of those 'others' brands, like TCL, Akira which is still working? My own Philips, non pixel plus is going on 10 years too

Doggie Howser Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 I have a pretty decent Sony WEGA 29" but I still think for regular SD programming, my sister's Philips PixelPlus looked better.
petetherock Posted June 19, 2007 Author Posted June 19, 2007 You know years back I was salivating at a Loewe TV for 5k, 29". Now for the money I can got my Pioneer plasma :)
InnocentBlood Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 Using my htpc for 1080i to this "monster". PQ still very good. :P i'm using the oppo 970 with this one @ 720p - the PQ is very pleasing to my eye :)

petetherock Posted June 19, 2007 Author Posted June 19, 2007 Yep thats the one - Basso Best sound, and the Philips pixel plus for best picture P I just terminated my first colour TV...it's Sony 21" trinitron last week, the first model that has remote control back in the early 80 (I bought in 1981)....now 26 years later...picture just turning reddish......replaced by a Bravia 46" X series in my dining room... :) I got a 34" Sony Kirara Basso (My best) in my bedroom, a 29" Trintron in my living room, a 14" Trnitron in my son's room. Knight_Rider Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 i'm using the oppo 970 with this one @ 720p - the PQ is very pleasing to my eye :) Are u using 50 or 60 Hz? Seems a bit bright for me. Using 1080i/60 seems quite ok to. Just got the oppo so playing around with the diff res. 720p and 1080i seems not much diff ???

Still going strong, although I did have a part replaced about a year or two ago, at a cost of about $140 -- well worth the repair cost I think. The bass from the TV is quite amazing, well equal to anything an HTiB setup will put out. PQ on DRC1250 is simply amazing (I find using DRC100 means you can see scanlines too easily). We still use it in our bedroom.
