Hi guys,

My boss recently moved house and he wants to set up a cinema room. Acting smart I told him why not let me plan it since I'm sort of a hifi enthusiast. Now a little bit regret cos its the weekend and I have to do research instead of watching some new movies I bought. no choice cos agreed already and its good for my 'career advancement'  ;D

So thought I'll open it for discussion here, since I'm sure most people have a 'dream' wishlist.

The basic idea is something  close to one of those small GV screens. Projector, those special seats and all. The size of the room is slightly smaller or equal size as those smallest cinema theatres (not very sure, i have very poor judging of room size). probably able to accommodate 2-3 rows of seats plus a bar. the budget is really almost unlimited.

1) any sites showing such setups? preferably applicable in home settings.

2) any good contractor/installers to set up the whole thing? i presume all the equipment needs to be concealed, screen needs to b installed, etc.

lastly, thanks in advance for anybody's help.

Try www.domus.com.sg. They seem to do home theatre installation, including THX Home Theatres. I have no personal experience of their services.

(Let me know when I can collect my commission from the unlimited budget ;))

i suggest you just introduce him to KEC or somebody...he'll be grateful enough if you put him in touch with competent professionals...better still if there is a store where they know you already...then you can impress him by being "known". and you don't have to do anything else.

then if the boss spends a lot of money, the shop will be happy with you and give you special price in future!

Seems like after 2003, they got no more projects already based on their portfolio showcase.  :P

Yeppie, you will defintely need to approach one of those custom installers to provide the full fledged solution.  Just pop into Adelphi and you can probably approach shops like KEC, Artcoustic Gallery and Sound Decisions which provide the full suite of solutions for a HT room.  They will normally work with the Interior Designer of your boss house to ensure a proper design.  Don't forget that a HT room involves more than just HT Equipment, you are talking about signal controlling equipment, power management, lighting and much much more.

thanks for all the help guys. will try out those shops recommended. turns out that actually not much help i can offer my boss.

what you can do is go down with him to the shops, and advise him on whether what the shop is telling him is accurate, for example. you can help to explain to him what different terms and features mean, to a non-enthusiast. Eg. "HDMI", "DTS", etc.

unlimited for sure? gotta get the big boyz toys if really want. 3chip 1080P DLP, anamorphic lens attachment, accoustic transparent screen at scope ratio, scaler, power amp, etc etc...

Aiya its no sweat. Just pick up one of those magazines like Widescreen Review or the like and follow their USD100k-200k reference systems. They usually post it somewhere in each issue. I think the basic thing you need to figure out is size and budget.

My (totally untested) opinion is that for this type of cinema-type home theatre, the equipment we tend to drool over is almost secondary. The "wow" factor comes from tiered theatre-style seating, controlled lighting, mechanised screen masking, etc.

I don't think the challenge is in choosing which speakers, screen, projector, etc. Once you get into a high price range, almost anything should be good enough. Sure, for e

agree with sonofdbn.. just think about what most impresses your guests with your own HT room?

apart from the usual furnishings such as seating, lighting, screens, universal remote.. IMO the next best thing is media server already. :) Since got budget can look at stuff like kaleidascape: http://www.kaleidescape.com/

other than that, probably basic room treatment will be important, so planning out the renovations will be critical.

u got to be joking... the boss is not going to care about stuffs like HDMI, DTS. etc...

unless the boss is a IT savvy or HT freaks, do not approach this in xtremeplace forummers angle..

n frankly i think the boss is non of the above, else he would be heavily involved in all aspect of his cinema room.

the boss want a cinema room. for what, most probably to enjoy watching movie and have some friends over the cinema room to watch a movie and talk cock sing song after that...

so

1) the room must look like a cinema.

2) big big screen

3) heavy curtain all around

4) lighting can be controlled.. ie. can be dimmed

5) a few of the plush leather seats

6) carpetted floor

7) have a few cinema posters hanging on the cinema walls.

8) sound proof room

9) everything control using a single remote

10) preferably hidden speakers

11) put in a disc and press play to enjoy his movie.

he will not be particular about stuffs like HD-DVD, blu ray, HD sound etc.

actually he would preferable SD DVD, he want to be able to buy a DVD off the retail shop and bring home to watch.

no need media server or whatever fancy stuffs...

remember, its the boss cinema room and not your cinema room.

Apart from this, I would add

massive output subwoofers (yes plural - if you can, one for every channel)

Butt shaker units for every chair.

agree with everything except this. you should see some of the high end ones in action. :)

just put into the dvdp and can play, but at same time its a back-up.

next time wanna view the same old movie, no need to go hunt for the disc anymore. will appear on screen as catalog.

best is it works throughout the house, not just the movie room, so can view from living room, etc for casual viewing.

I can help you configure and setup your boss HT. Give me at call. Send me a priate for my informaiton.

Tks.

So thought I'll open it for discussion here, since I'm sure most people have a 'dream' wishlist.

The basic idea is something  close to one of those small GV screens. Projector, those special seats and all. 1) any sites showing such setups? preferably applicable in home settings.

2) any good contractor/installers to set up the whole thing? i presume all the equipment needs to be concealed, screen needs to b installed, etc.

lastly, thanks in advance for anybody's help.

Yep, the K-system is one very slick device and easy to use, played before in a dealer friend's workshop.

Hmm.. looks like the bees are starting to come out of their hives to get a piece of the pollen.  Seems a good way to draw out all those vendors lurking around XP.  Hahaha..
