zapp1624705742 Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 When you can listen to something for one hour continuously without realising it...u have been poisoned badly. Lol...i am typing as i am listening to MP3s from my computer laptop connected to a Cayin A55 paired with Mission 780SE speakers at close range cos i am in my office now. Crappy DAIYO interconnects 3.5mm to 2RCA and Klotz speaker cables w no brand oxidised banana plugs. This is not the ideal setup but wow, the amp really makes the whole system sing. The fine nuances of the songs missed sooooo much lol. Tubes = POISON
DJQ Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 yeah looks like theres an equal amount of bros kana the tube poison. ;) ur caiyin looks awesome. i was stung by the shanling tube amp... but it was way off budget for me.
zapp1624705742 Posted June 13, 2007 Author Posted June 13, 2007 2 hours spent listening to this fella at home with my floorstanders...spoil my ears again. enjoying every moment of it...

Darthfunk Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 What about changing the stock EL34 China tubes to Mullard EL34 tubes ;D Seems the the EL34 NOS tubes are damm expensive! :o
zapp1624705742 Posted June 14, 2007 Author Posted June 14, 2007 Why change when they are brand new? lol...my stock tubes tok gong enough liao :p If the sound to your liking then shiok shiok already... But should conduct experiment if only some bros have the same amp and we plug in new tubes to one and keep stock on the other to do a A/B :p
2100 Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 What about changing the stock EL34 China tubes to Mullard EL34 tubes ;D Seems the the EL34 NOS tubes are damm expensive! :o No point, the china tubes other than some Shuguang, TJ/Full Music are usually quite bad. Electroharmonix EL34EH is more than enough. If you want to play, play with the input and coupling caps and the amp will be lifted to another performance level. Frankie will be able to help. In my experience with another amp, this mod is very significantly more noticeable than playing with tubes (but your case may be different, but potential still there nevertheless)
2100 Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 Interesting discussion on SH.TV Tube amps are actually very linear devices and are not coloured. The colouring is usually done by the capacitors and resistors in the circuits. It is sometimes called "voicing". And of course not forgetting the OPT. Some manufacturers even go to the extent of using a main big cap and bypass with a smaller value to get the sound they want. Also manufacturers have their own stable of speakers and voice their products with that, so what they have may not be what you have. For eg, a manufacturer voices their stuff with Dynaudio and you have a Harbeth, then really LPPL one i tell ya. Quite a lot of speakers sound more coloured than amps. SETs may sound a bit on the liquid and slow side, not much whack, but they are not coloured if implemented properly. Try to drop by Aural Designs and listen to the Almarro 318B (which is modded). I do not think that is coloured, and it is by no means a high-end amp at $2,800 before discount. My solid-state amp is much more coloured!

kzone Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 I like colouration, no colouration is like no personality. very boring... like coffee without sugar/cream or ice without cream... haha But of cos, some colours r nice n popular while some are weird & only appeals to a smaller group..

I can't agree more. All hifi are colored in one way or the other. It is a personal preference just like your coffee - the best cup is the one that trigger your taste bug. Before you know it, the next better cup come along and you just get more colorful.
domho8 Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 Whatever color there is, or no color, important is you must LIKE!! ;D
