jfk Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 As I posted for advise on speaker cables that help to give warmth.... I was pondering if I should consider changing equipment(s), and if so, which equipment? 1) Speaker: Triangle Antal floorstand (older version) with matching centre speaker http://www.soundstage.com/revequip/todd24.htm 2) Amp: Panasonic XR55 3) DVD player: Denon 1730 4) Living room size: HDB maisonatte living room (approx 4.5m width, 3.5m from sofa to screen) Would changing XR55 to Denon/Marantz AV receivers help? if so, would a mid range suffice? 100W per channel models? Thanks in advance for inputs and advises.
kzone Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 maybe u wanna consider adding an integreted amp & a CDP as against to changing ur current gears?
jfk Posted June 12, 2007 Author Posted June 12, 2007 my main problem....$$$$ :) baby coming, not much budget liao
synthesis1624705793 Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 If you can DIY, maybe you can change the attenuator resistor in the crossover to slightly higher value. This will reduce some brightness for sure. It will cost under $10 for the resistors. ;)
jfk Posted June 12, 2007 Author Posted June 12, 2007 hi synthesis, can u elaborate more? I don't mind dismantling and unscrewing stuff. but need some guide in where to find such capacitors, what type to get etc. shops like those in berlington square?
synthesis1624705793 Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 Probably the best way is to take photo of your crossover (plan view) and post it here. Mention the values of the components if not readable from the photo. From there we can see what we can change. You can get hi power resistor from Koba (3rd fl People's Park Center) and if you want to change the capacitor you can go to Larry Hifi at the basement. They have at least Solen capacitor and Multicap I think. You can also go to Burlington.
jfk Posted June 12, 2007 Author Posted June 12, 2007 Hi all Not sure if the photos will be upload the pictures to this site. Here's the link to the pictures that i uploaded to yahoo photos just in case.... http://sg.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/jeferyk1/album?.dir=1269scd If someone can help to upload the pictures here, thanks in advance. Please feel free to advice or comment on the cross over parts etc. What i notice is, the inner cables looks very basic and cheap.
synthesis1624705793 Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 Is it possible to take the back side picture of the PC B so can trace the circuit. At first I tought the 3ohm resistor is series resistor for attenuation, but since it's located near the woofer terminal, it looks like it's for zobel/ woofer impedance correction. I'm not sure what are two small ceramic caps are doing there. The 6uF and 2.7uF capacitor are likely for midrange and tweeter circuit. Changing these caps to inexpensive Solen (probably around $5 a piece) will likely improve mid/high performance but not necessary will tame down the brightness. If it is confirmed that the resistor is for zobel network, you need to install L-pad attenuator before the tweeter to tame down the brightness. There's calculator you can follow to calculate the resistor values for L-pad based on tweeter impedance and desired attenuation (a couple of dB is sufficient). http://www.mhsoft.nl/spk_calc.asp and it will look something like this
jfk Posted June 13, 2007 Author Posted June 13, 2007 These technical terms are overwhelming for me. Looking at the cables, they seems to be cheapo cables to me. Any 1 stop shop i can go for such enhancements?

Thanks in advance for inputs and advises. If midrange is a strong consideration, I would prefer the midrange of the Denon's compared to Marantz's which I had auditioned together. But overall, musicality and stronger vocals of the Marantz, led me to my current purchase. My comparison was between the Marantz SR7001 and the Denon 2307. Cheers!
jfk Posted June 14, 2007 Author Posted June 14, 2007 Sold my SR55. In market for a new AVR. I was thinking of going in either of these 2 directions first: 1. Budget - Mid range AVR (yamaha/denon/marantz) + power amp to drive triangles (such as audiolab 8000P, 100-120 power output) 2. Mid-higher range AVR such as Denon 3806/yamaha 2500 that some bros here selling. Any opinion? esp those who had or is using triangles or speakers with similar characteristics? Thanks
