Alright guys, as promised...I have just finished my last bit on the review of PlayStation 3. The idea of getting the PS3 to souble-up as a personal computer get a hold of me yesterday and so for those who are like me, out for a challenge or advernture. You can follow my full guide on the YDL OS installation at my HT Blog now.

Link: http://www.desray2k.com/ht_journal. (Again its extremely graphic intensive! you have been warned) :P

;) If you spot any errors in any of the steps whilst going through, please let me know so that I can revise it from time to time.

Any Linux gurus here? Please do help us out here if you happen to have a PS3 and really into all this modification etc.

Ok due to the overwhelming requests to provide a guide on how to install the VideoLAN (VLC) Media Player and other stuff. I will include it tomorrow after I get my act together right for this one first.

Thanks for understanding :)

so does it mean tat adter install the VLC, PS3 is official noe as PS3HTPC?

which mean can play divx, divx hd?

Does it also mean that there is no more warranty?

Warrenty still stand I believe. u did not modify boots OS, u just install another OS which is part of the PS3 features.

Okay guys, as promised...I have came up with a simple step-by-step guide for the installation of the 2 prominent software Media Players namely VideoLAN Client (VLC) and MediaPlayer (MPlayer) on YDL. After installing these 2 great Media Players, you should be able to play most of the clips in commonly-encoded codecs syuch as divx, xvid etc)...I have no time to test out all the video clips with different codecs yet. Hopefully someone can test it out and report back here if you encounter any playback issues.

MPlayer in YDL

VLC in YDL

And I have also revised my previous version of Installation Guide on YDL on PS3 system. It will address certain issues like getting perfect 1:1 pixel mapping on 1080p Projector as well as the use of 'YUM' - aka Yellow Dog Modified Updater) for ease of package updating and removal on YDL.

So get busy... :)

Dear pschia, it will not void the warranty even if you screw up the installation process of YDL on PS3 as good as it may sound...Sony is actually the one who have approached Terra Soft Solutions (the creator behind YDL) to help come up with a third party Open Source Linix OS to be used on PS3 ;D ;D ;D

Check out the CEO of Terra Soft Solutions giving a video promo oon YouTube and you'll know why its perfectly alright!

So go ahead man!

After doing more tests on the video playback.

Some of the files can be played with no problem...others no codec still. A breakdown for you guys.

A) Able to be played

- DivX, XviD, TS, VOB, AVI, H.264 (must be encoded in normal Mpeg engine and NOT MKV container), MPG, DVD (with the actual DVD Disc inserted into the BD Loader, not the raw DVD IFO/ISO format)

B) Unable to be played

- MKV (Got image but stutter and even worst got heavy pixellation!), WMV9 (VC1) able to play but suffer heavy stutter and audio not in-sync issue, RMVB not able to be played at all as there is no Real media video codec installed in either both MPlayer and VLC. Sorry folks!

After thoughts

- You can install YDL on PS3. The main advantage of an OS installed inside a PS3 is mainly for you to surf the Internet, check your mails (on a leisure note) as well as chatting with your news using the Instant Messaging (IM) software pre-installed with YDL. You can also use it to play photo slideshow sequence if you want. Apart from that...YDL may not be everyone's cup of tea. The potential is limitless provided Terra Soft Solutions and Sony really work hand in hand to make PS3 a truly powerful desktop PC to add its laurels...or else most of us will choose to ignore it in the long run. Imagine the convenience whilst doing a chat or post a message in this forum all at the comfort of your own dedicated HT Room (assuming you do have a Laptop or standalone HTPC setup in HT Room).

PS3 is indeed a powerful console to date. I bet no one can argue that with its unique 8 Core processors working in the background to deliver the best graphics on both games as well as movies on BD in particular...but at present, developers from Terra Soft Solutions are unable to tap the full power of these cores (only utilizing 6 of the 8 cores and using only a small fraction)...let's also face the fact that there's only 256MB of RDRAM in the PS3. Unless Sony allows full access to these RDRAM modules when the console is in OS mode (which I doubt she will allow it) - we can never do any 'CPU-intensive' stuff on YDL here. And to make things even more bleak, the powerful nVidia GPU responsible for the amazing detailed graphics and resolutions we see on the Game OS itself WILL NOT be used by YDL (for now) making it really kind of useless at the moment.

By the way, we can't play any Active X content (i.e. Flash media and Shockwave content) to date on FireFox Browser making surfing another disappointment. But surfing speed is good IMO.

So you are better off using PS3 as a Game Console for the moment...till Terra Soft Solutions can strike a deal or pact with our dear Sony to fully utilize the hardwares in-built on this baby or else...you are better off using a normal desktop PC for now.

That concludes my whole segment on YDL for these past 3 days. Have a nice weekend everyone :)

Hi Desray, Wow great write up...thanks for it.

One question, if I already have lots of downloads on my PS3 and want to install Yellow Dog Linux, I'll have to reformat and lose everything?

Posted

Does this make the PS3 a network enabled divx/xvid h264 player?

Depends on how you look at the term 'network' here.

If you follow my posts closely, there is a way for you to decode and re-encode (the process is called Transcoding) divx and xvid encoded AVI clips into compatible Mpeg2 format to be plyable on PS3...and that requires you to be networked to your home network domain and have either Nero MediaHome module or Windows Media Player 11 installed on the PC that will be acting as the server. Take note that this can be done on Game OS mode of PS3.

If you're talking about the streaming of 'direct divx and/or xvid' clips from network over to YDL envirnoment....then this is not advisable as streaming from network is not as easy and straight forward as using WMP11 or Nero MediaHome here. From my experience, the streaming of divx and xvid clips takes forever on YDL :( However to overcome it, the preferred method is actually copy-n-paste the clip over to YDL for playback! I know it sounded silly but apparently there's some issue here on the networking portion for VLC or MPlayer to stream such files seamlessly...

Hopefully there will be more updates to address these issues at a later stage. :)

Hi Desray, Wow great write up...thanks for it.

Nope. You will need to perform a backup for all your existing SAVED GAMES DATA and other stuff like Movie and Game trailers etc...to an external USB thumb drive or HDD. Remember its must be using FAT32 file system and not the Microsoft-based NT file system. Only the former will be recognized by PS3. Do take note.

If you have any problem getting the external storage media devices to work, let me know and I'll tell the ways to make the external device work on PS3.

Ok, thanks, I assume the backing also works for games bought from PSN? It'll be painful to loose those.

Hi Desray, thx for the comprehensive writeup.

2 questions:

1. how do you get the wireless to work w YDL ? There don't seem to be any security settings to select WEP or WPA?

2. I can't find the option in Application ->System Tools-> to change boot up to PS3

any ideas ?

thx
