Good find there mate.  However, I will be hard pressed to find 3 titles among them since I would have gotten most of the titles that I wanted previously.  Haiz, this is the problem of being an early adopter.  ;D

just placed an order  ;D

btw steer clear of THE FIFTH ELEMENT. this is the original release that is considered one of the worst blu-rays released so far. it's so bad that sony are releasing a new remastered version later this year.

Thanks for this thread :)

Will be getting a PS3 this week or next week so am ordering my first collection of Blu-Rays :)  So far on my order I have the following... anything else worth buying that I am missing?

Crank

Apocalypto

Blood Diamond

Big Fish

Kung-Fu Hustle

Superman Returns

Happy Feet

Casino Royale

Planet Earth

zapp, I don't mind letting you latch onto my order if you are willing to collect at Novena.  I will be shipping my order to my friend in the US and he will send it over.  How would payment work between you and me?

Thats mighty neighbourly of you bro,

Maybe you can let on about the latest PS3 prices and where to get them.

BTW the latest version of Fifth Element is nice AFAIK.

Well I figure I get to read this forum and gather info for free, the least I could do is help some people out  ;D

I thought PS3 prices in Singapore were all the same at $799?  Is it possible to get it cheaper?

there may be a price cut soon http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/entertainment/view/280561/1/.html

Oh ya, I read about that... but I don't think it will be any time soon... maybe in a couple months.  Plus the PS3 here is already one of the cheapest in the world, if Sony offers a price cut they might skip us  :P

A larg(ish) order like that is an easy target for our customs, so you might want to split it into a few parcels to be less conspicuous.

And my suggestion for "worth buying" recently released titles to add to your list:

1)  the two Pirates movies. Reference quality PQ & SQ.

Thanks to the "magic" of fast-forwarding (esp the awful cannibal island scenes), I find myself enjoying Part2 much more than I did in the cinemas.

2)  Deja Vu

Faultless PQ & SQ (on my humble HT system anyway), great performance by Denzel Washington and the most inventive car chase sequence I've ever seen.

My favorite Blu-ray movie currently.

3) Letters from Iwo Jima

Another BD with exemplary PQ & SQ (using Dolby TrueHD)

This is Ken Watanabe at his finest since hes not burdened by English language dialogs.

(but definitely not for family viewing, esp some scenes involving hand-grenades... )

Btw - Superman Returns BD is getting an upgraded release with multichannel PCM & Dolby TrueHD tracks (and hopefully better video transfer), perhaps you should wait for that, unless you dont mind double-dipping.

Interesting.  I was under the impression that as long as your total isn't over US$300 then you will be fine.  Is there some law against bringing in movies?

Superman is for my girlfriend so I doesn't really affect me.  But any idea when the new upgraded version will be out?

I don't really care for the Pirates movies, but I will give Deja Vu a try.  Thanks for the helpful info! :)

I take it you're not a local?

SG's broad censorship law requires all films in any form (with a few exceptions eg home movies) to be vetted by our censors.

This is something home video enthusiasts here have to contend with for the past decade.

I'll not dwell too much on this, but suffice to say that the authorities are more "understanding" now,  they realise most online dvd purchases are for personal consumption.

However, having large orders at one go is like telling our customs "I'm a dealer and I'm trying my luck without going through the proper procedures"  in which case they won't be as lenient.

As for the Superman Returns upgrade, word is it'll be out "end of the year", about the same time as Batman Begins.

More than S$400, ur parcel will be subjected to GST.  Custom MIGHT keep ur parcel and send u a letter for u to pick them up from Eunos, after paying ur GST.

If u dvds are all available locally from singapore, then there is no harm ordering them from the net (less the GST thing).  Even if custom open up ur parcel, they will not send it to the censorship board if they see the titles are all "clean".  I had a few of my parcels opened up by custom, then they paste a "custom checked" sticker on it, but did not forward it to censorship board.

Small parcel, custom usually will skip the check.

that's basically a good summary of the position. a lot better than it was 4-5 years ago, when online shopping wasn't so common.

Cool, thanks for the info.  I think I will just have my friend open up all the DVDs first and then label the box as used DVDs and put a low price... then I should be ok right?  ;D

you are probably better off leaving the discs packed in the amazon box...the customs seem to give more leeway to amazon boxes, because they are a trusted seller.

besides, provided your order isn't more than S$400 in total, you don't attract GST. just how many discs are you planning to buy? even if you buy 20 10 discs x US$19.95, you still don't hit S$400...

(edited to correct the number 20 to 10 - my maths sucks...)

This is what I ordered... it's barely under S$400.  But I also got a couple of HDMI cables from monoprice so if you add those in I am slightly over  :-X

Yes, the bad old days of having to go down to FPD and pay $ for a bunch of stickers.  Wonder if the skinny guy with the white hair is still there.

Since the new classifications came out, I have not had a single disc checked despite going through USPS, UPS etc etc.

Gst is S$400, inclusive of shipping.  To be safe, try to keep ur order plus shipping to be less than US$250.

The link doesnt work anymore, I guess the promo end already?

Fook Lai

it's been replaced by a new promotion...up to 42% discount on blu-rays and HD-DVDs.

but given that most discs are already discounted by 30-35%, it doesn't really make a huge difference.
