eggz Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 Anyone else has been hit by blu-ray disc rot? I've just discovered it in my The Prestige blu-ray disc. I've only watched it once, on the PS3, about 1.5 months ago. Couple of days ago, I tried it again and realised that the PS3 wasn't able to read it. The surface of the disc looks like it has lots of blotches or specks, but when you run your fingers over the surface, its smooth, which means that the problem is happending below the top surface layer. Here are some photos
Jag Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 That really looks bad........Now I'm worried about BRD andHD-DVD rotting away prematurely... really becoming like perishable goods eg, fruits and vegs.
Jedi R Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 OMG .... that looks bad.... I doubt you can do anything to remove it.... Hope its just one off....
Doggie Howser Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 Shit!! I thot BRs were supposed to be indestructable?? innit? That was one of their selling points against HD DVDs
Heng Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 I suspect could be the same CD/dvd disc-rot issues, e.g. oxidation of the aluminum metal reflective layer or rapid deterioration due to some inferior quality materials used in the pressing plant... but 1.5 month lifespan is really shocking!
Khooktd Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 Eggz, what a coincidence! Two nights ago i had also tried playing this and had a problem reading the disk on my PS3. Upon inspecting the disk, i found exactly the same problem like yours. So i emailed Amazon yesterday, and within an hour, they responded that they will re-ship me a new replacement disk. "Thanks for contacting us at Amazon.com. I am sorry for the problem you experienced with the item "The Prestige [blu-ray]". I've placed a new order for the item and also upgraded the shipping speed for free to Expedited shipping in order to deliver this package as soon as possible. As the cost of return shipping is prohibitively expensive in this case, you do not need to return the original item. " I had bought from them in late Feb, so it's really great service on their part. Read in AVSforum that this title had quality issues and could be batch related.
Audio Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 Oh No! I better go check my copy of the Prestige tonight.... Almost like magic...don't you say? (Audio)

Genesis Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 Prestige means status, reputation and esteem....how ironic that Warner would screw this one up ;D
SteinigerGE Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 Prestige means status, reputation and esteem....how ironic that Warner would screw this one up ;D If you've watched the movie, you'll also know the Prestige is the result of the masterful sleight of hand that draws you away from the truth about what is really happening! So here's the Warner Brothers' Prestige: Put it in a transparent blue box, and wallpaper it with words like "Beyond High Definition" and "HD Picture/HD Sound" so the consumer doesn't realize we were forced to press the discs before the manufacturing process was perfected! Maybe they won't notice that it skips more than a pirated VCD. Well done WB, your Prestige worked on me. The shocking climax is we've been screwed because we're early adopters...
yellowhandman Posted June 10, 2007 Posted June 10, 2007 same problem on my copy. will be emailing amazon immediately.
Malleaus Posted June 11, 2007 Posted June 11, 2007 Same problem but at the moment its still playable. I got mine in March during the sale. Quality problem?
yellowhandman Posted June 11, 2007 Posted June 11, 2007 same problem on my copy. will be emailing amazon immediately. amazon responded almost immediately. sending a new copy, FOC.
Malleaus Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 Amazon also reverted that they will send me another one FOC. Great service!
kennyboy1624705781 Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 i guess they've known of this problem and have a ready stock of the replacement from the makers.
yellowhandman Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 actually amazon is pretty good at reshipping things once a complaint is made. it's first-world service culture - no questions asked, customer is always right. i once received a crow boxed set that had two copies of crow 2 and one copy of crow 3, but no crow 1. i emailed them, and they immediately sent a new copy of the boxed set, without even needing to see a photograph of the original (stlll unwrapped) boxed set which i offered them. so i ended up with one copy of crow 1, three copies of crow 2 and two copies of crow 3.
dXter Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 The replacement disc has arrived. No anomalies found. :)
eggz Posted June 15, 2007 Author Posted June 15, 2007 The replacement disc has arrived. No anomalies found. :) I got my replacement as well. Haven't checked it, but I quite sure it'll be OK. 3 Cheers for Amazon!
eggz Posted June 21, 2007 Author Posted June 21, 2007 Wah, I got a private message on avsforum (my nick there is Venom5) from some guy working in Microsoft, check this out: Howdy. I just saw your posting regarding the problems with Prestige. We had heard stories about this kind of problem for a while but never had pictures of it as you were kind enough to post. You have gotten our replicator contact so interested that he is offering to analyze it using their special equipment to see if they can identify the true defect and any theories as to the cause. So if it would be great if you could send it to us. We would be happy to compensate you for the cost and effort. If you are a PC or Xbox customer, we can get you some nice gifts related to those (just let me know what kind of thing you like, or what you already have so we don’t duplicate it). I can also send a good copy of the same disc if you like plus a thank you gift. Of course, as you see below, we are in the opposing camp. But I suspect if you want to really know what is wrong with the disc, you have a higher chance of learning it through us, than the other side . Just let me know. Thanks! __________________ Amir Microsoft (HD DVD insider) VC-1 video codec insider in BD/HD DVD Ask me questions about HD DVD here Interesting eh? The war is hotter than I thought, obviously, the HD-DVD camp is trying to use this as more ammunition against Sony and Blu-ray. They even offer gifts….amazing!
eggz Posted June 21, 2007 Author Posted June 21, 2007 BTW, look at this link: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=774635 This guy Amir, is a Corporate Vice President in Microsoft.....
