Went over to KEC after the PC Show and saw that the 361, 461 and 661 receivers have been released.  The 661 model is priced at $887 and is equipped with 2 HDMI inputs.  However, this model does not allow for HDMI upscaling and deinterlacing although it will support upcoversion of analog sources through the component output.  HDMI Upscaling, de-interlacing and upconversion will however be supported in an even higher model namely the 861.  Power for the 661 is rated at 130W x 7 and is equipped with BurrBrown DACs.  A demo unit for the 661 is currently available for testing.  One other thing, Yammie has also bundled the iPOD dock for free with the 661.  No ideas when the 861 will be available although it's already seating in the warehouse.  IMO, this receiver will be suitable for those who only have HighDef players connecting to it since it can pass through 1080i/720p/1080p signals.

Whats the difference between Upscaling and UpConversion?

If my DVD player is capable of Upscaling and deinterlacing, do I need the same function on my receiver?

Upconverting is usually used to refer to the capability of a processor to "convert" a lower grade signal like composite, s-video or component to component and/or HDMI.

Upscaling refers to the capability of the processor to process the original signal to a higher resolution eg NTSC/PAL to 720p/1080i and usually includes deinterlacing as well (eg 480i/576i to 480p/576p).

With upconverting only, there is no scaling/deinterlacing.

That said, some upscaling receivers allow you to bypass the upscaling.

Unfortunately the 661 only provides upconversion features for the analog sources up to component out.  You would need the 861 to be able to upcovert all sources out through HDMI.  In addition, the 661 has no upscaling or deinterlacing capability as well.  That is reserved for the 861 which provides both features to 1080i/720p resolutions.

So, in deciding between Onkyo and Yamaha, which sounds better? I've been using Yamaha all these years, but the recently announced Onkyos have very good specs, and it's tempting to try one. Folks who have used both, which brand sounds better? I use my AV receiver for movies, 2ch and multichannel music. Somehow it seems Yammies have better "resale" value...

Perhaps just have to go down to KEC for a listen....

The yammie 661 can.

Extracted from AVS:

"...The thing that stands stands out to me about the 661 is its versatile handling of a 7.1 MC LPCM input and the ability to apply post-processing to it (for example, using DPL IIx to extract 7.1 from 5.1). This, I think, will be more important than HDMI 1.3/onboard decoding for the advanced formats found on HD media...."

But one complaint for 661.  When power on, the surround sound goes back to "Auto" by default.  IE, u cannot default DPLIIx to ur HD-DVD or PS3 input.  Need to press additional button to turn on DPLIIx everytime, unless u want to keep ur 661 power on at all times.

However, the 661 cannot handle 1080p24 bypass properly from the PS3.  :'(

it'll be awhile before all the receivers incorporate everything as standard feature set - certainly PLIIx is more important than native decoding (which is irrelevant, because it has HDMI1.2)

One more bad thing about the 661.  It does not have the "extended surround" button on the remote to toggle on DPLIIx.  Thus, need to use menu to go in and enable the DPLIIx everytime when u power the unit up (from standby as well).
