asking the above question is just wanna know how long lasting are the plasma/LCD TV as i'm quite a "heavy" user...

my toshiba 34" crt TV is coming to almost 6 years already... repair twice last year, fortunately each time just pay $80 for the service fees... so still using it...

my usage pattern,

weekdays working, so of course not "ON".

after work, 9pm+ will start and off only at 1-2am.

weekends, maybe on at 1pm and off at 1-2am.

inbetween, tv is not off even if i go to the room and do 1-2 hours of surfing...

about 50 hours of usage per week.

i think the better question is "how long can the plasma/lcd tv stay with you before YOU break down and buy a new one because you get itchy"!

;D

had my panny plasma for almost three years...no problem.

Anyway, the sharp LCDs on display at orchard mrt been there for a long time & I think its on 24/7.. so shud not be a problem with long usage..

My sister's LG LCD broke down in less than 6 months. LG replaced the panel on the spot.

at least this is still within warranty, so its ok.

we heard of CRT tv lasting 5-10 years easily...

seldom heard ppl saying their plasma/LCD tv lasting 5-10 years...

of course plasma/LCD tv only really took off in singapore maybe 2-3 years ago??? so maybe also hard to say whether they are long lasting or not...

Haha.. I have a Samsung CRT that has passed the 11 year mark and a Pioneer RPTV that has passed the 10 year mark.  These sets are built like a tank and just refuse to die.  For most LCD/Plasmas, I'll be thankful if they can last beyond 5 years without giving problems.  On the other hand, it give upgrade freaks like us excuses to change more often without incurring the wrath of the CFO.  ;D

My family had a Sony Trinitron CRT which lasted us 20 years before it died (the switches died, the tube was still fine but not worth to repair), and this TV was used for about 4-5 hours daily without hiccup.

Let's see if LCDs and plasma displays can put up with that kind of reliability.

BTW, the Ashahi TV CRT factory in Tuas is closing down due to falling demand for CRTs.  Another page in history closed. Turn the page...

my hitachi plasma lasted 2.5 years already. Spend $400 to extend one year warranty and NOTHING went wrong :(

now just waiting for it to DIE so I can upgrade. But it just won't die. We abuse it pretty much as it is used to watch my wife's korean DVD, Cable TV and 360 gaming.

It is a old 480p panel and I want to upgrade to 720p since 720p panel is like so cheap now. Maybe if it survive for 1 more year I can afford the 1080p panel :)

i feel your pain...pay for extended warranty, and it won't die, so wasted money...even when you want it to die, also won't die, so can't justify upgrade...

isn't built-in obsolescence a wonderful thing?

From my experience, I think the most crtical consideration is where the tv is made. The first few gen were all made in  Japan and Korea and more reliable. I have a JVC tv made in Japan and my friend's from Malaysia and both same model. His conked out a few times already but mine only broke down once since 1992, despite heavy usage.

agreed with Jagdpanzer that country of made is important. my current made in Japan 43" toshiba projection tv has been with me for 8 years liao & never breakdown once. so sad, as hv no reason to buy plasma/lcd tv.  :'(

my brother had the MIC 2nd generation of my 43" toshiba projection tv and brokedown within a year. repaired and brokedown within a week or so.

Anyway, these days products have very short shelve life. BTW, it is usually costly to repair LCD or plasma tv unlike CRT, where you can change tubes and components.Try to top up to a 5 year warranty for your full HD. As for those sub 2k, don't bother as chances one will have it replaced after 3yr.

my panasonic 42" SD plasma had been with me for 7 years, and is still going strong.

7 years???? just curious how much did the SD plasma cost 7 years ago..... I bought my SD 42" plasma at ard $4k 2.5 years back. It must be REALLY rare to have a flat panel screen 7 years ago.

so far, we have

1 plasma - 7 years

and 1 pioneer 504 (i assume its plasma) - 2 y 9 mths..

not much feedback from forumers...

i mentioned in my earlier post that i've had my 42" panny plasma for almost three years. no problems at all.

$17999.  extended warranty is another 1k plus.  early adopters paid a lot huh ..  ;)

btw I was kind of surprised to see LCD has improved so little over the years.  in 2000 my panny already boasted a contrast of 3000:1.  Today's LCD still doesn't have the (native) contrast of my plasma 7yrs ago.  IMHO, if anyone is looking for a panel now between LCD and plasma, without a slightest doubt, plasma has the better PQ.  It's not even close.

i've been harbouring a suspicion that all the hype about LCDs is really because manufacturers make more money from LCDs. Read between the lines of any LCD review - even 5-star reviews - and the message always seems to be "it is almost as good as plasma" or "LCDs have gotten to the point where you barely notice smearing during fast motion" or "even SD TV input looks ok".

My Sony 29" CTV (made in Malaysia) was with me for 11 yrs w/o any problem...but needed to pass it on due to other reason.

My Toshiba 43" Rear projection TV (assembled in Spore)  of abt 5.5 yrs is almost dead ( circuit had gone bonker....problem include..cant turn on,,, if managed to turn on,,realised all the channel had been "shorted" to one channel...so can switch from chn 1 , 2 ,3 and even video channel 1,2,3....are showing the same programe.)

Now need to decide,,,repair or use it as an excuse to change to flat panel !! ;D
