Hi,

Could someone kindly share is there any advantage of HDMI through receiver to TV, assuming receiver has no upscaling.

Many thanks.

In my old HTS, I connected DVD player component direct to TV and optical to receiver; while for my VCR, I connected composite direct to TV (VCR did not leverage on receiver because it is mono anyway). My existing LCD TV accepts only component and not HDMI although it could process 720p (if I remember correctly) - no intention to replace it until it kapoo.

For my new HTS, I am likely to retain my DVD and VCR players (may be replacing DVD with HD DVD depending outcome of format war). No intention to get other gadgets like xbox, etc. In this case, do you think I should still connect DVD HDMI to receiver and then component out to TV?

I'm not advocating you connect one way or the other - but here are your options, and considerations.

1. some HD(/BD) players do not have multichannel analog outputs - therefore the only way to get hirez audio is via the HDMI. you can still get normal (DTS audio through the optical output)

2. Even if the player and your receiver did have multichannel analog connections - one good HDMI Cable could be cheaper than 6 (or 8) good interconnects.

3. If your receiver upconverts composite to component it might be a better idea to connect both the VCR and DVD player through the receiver (using DVD player component connections). If it doesn't there's no benefit other than being able to use a single button to switch sources (instead of having to change source at the receiver, then change source at TV - using 2 remotes)

4. I'm not sure if any receiver does HDMI to component (does yours?)

5. Also, have you tried running the VCR audio through the receiver's prologic processing?

Since the system is at your disposal - why not try the various connections - some ways may work for you and others may not give the desired result; take enjoyment in finding out ;)

Thanks SiriuslyCold.

Am aware that some HD does not have component out, so if getting one, will be getting one with HDMI + component at least.

Not sure if my target receiver (Denon AVR3806) can do HDMI to component. Worst come to worst, will do a component input to component output at receiver for DVD and composite input to component output for VCR.

Have not tried running the VCR audio through the receiver's prologic processing because I am still deliberating AVR3806.

Anybody has any idea if 3806 can do above? How much is 3806?

Any idea what are they, so I could start reading them at cnet or other sites?

Wonder if they will have 3806 equivalent but with better HDMI?
