petetherock Posted May 29, 2007 Posted May 29, 2007 Hi friends There has been a flurry of Toshiba HD DVD player buyers, be it the XA2, the A2 and I suspect a few more will get the local E1 (altough at current prices it is not so VFM) Can I propose a thread which lists owners and also here we can share tips and answer queries for all owners and potential buyers. Owners: petetherock - XA2 (electronics expo via amazon) - 550 USD v1.5 firmware in built, with newstar 1000w transformer
htfreak Posted May 29, 2007 Posted May 29, 2007 Let me add on to the list Owners: 1) petetherock - XA2 (electronics expo via amazon) - 550 USD v1.5 firmware in built, with newstar 1000w transformer 2) jeffong - A1 (ValueElectronics) - 499 USD v2.0 firmware with Powerpac 350w transformer 360 HD-DVD Add-on (ValueElectronics) - 199 USD with universal power adapter A2 (Amazon) - 237 USD v1.6 firmware with TBD transformer
petetherock Posted May 29, 2007 Author Posted May 29, 2007 Cheers jeff :) For those who bought overseas here is the address to send the rebates to if you don't have it: Toshiba: Free HD DVD P.O. Box 72699 Rockford, MN 55572 Seems this address is more effective than the listed one, got this off AVS forum Computation for VPost: Package Wt : 17.42lbs (7.91KG) Volumetric WT: 7.1KG (21.38" x 6.81" x 17.95" - box dimensions) VPost will charge S$12.99+(7.91kg x S$8.99/Kg) = S$84.17 + S$38.25 = S$122.42 for shipment of 1 pc.
htfreak Posted May 29, 2007 Posted May 29, 2007 U mean you got your freebie disks? Don't think your calculation is correct as Vpost has a different charging method for discs.
kzone Posted May 29, 2007 Posted May 29, 2007 Discs r charged at abt $5 for single pc title & $5 for every 2 disc in a box set on top of the base charge. Pete, on the topic of Tosh's free discs, arent u suppose to mail it along with a portion of the box? So how did u managed to get Vpost to deliver it together with the player?
Genesis Posted May 29, 2007 Posted May 29, 2007 There must be a better way of compiling the Tosh owners here than this :P 1) petetherock - XA2 (electronics expo via amazon) - 550 USD v1.5 firmware in built, with newstar 1000w transformer 2) jeffong - A1 (ValueElectronics) - 499 USD v2.0 firmware with Powerpac 350w transformer 360 HD-DVD Add-on (ValueElectronics) - 199 USD with universal power adapter A2 (Amazon) - 237 USD v1.6 firmware with TBD transformer 3) Genesis - XA2, current firmware 1.6, do I have to say I paid 800 USD plus shipping? ;D

Doggie Howser Posted May 29, 2007 Posted May 29, 2007 Mine was bought at US$799 plus Next Day Shipping (+another 50 bucks I think) to my hotel. I didn't submit it for the 3 free HD DVDs, but Value gave me 2 in the box (Lucky Number Slevin and Phantom of the Opera).

petetherock Posted May 30, 2007 Author Posted May 30, 2007 Thanks Tony Can you share how much vpost charged you for shipping? I remember you posted the dimensions and shipping in another thread once :)
tonyhs Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 Hi Pete, I finally ended combining my order with Fook Lai and our XA2s, which were bought from Compuplus were shipped through them. We paid US$159.25 total for shipping the 2 units. Regards, Tony
petetherock Posted June 1, 2007 Author Posted June 1, 2007 Hey Tsammyc I am posting here instead of Phil's thread so he can keep the thread to prices. But DVD upload speed is pretty brisk on a XA2, but HD DVD is slower. So maybe the DVD upload speed is comparable to the Oppo (used a 981 in Oz)? "For region free, I might be willing to pay an extra $300 - the used price of my Oppo but only for the XE-1 because its no point using the E-1 for SD-DVD (takes too long to boot up and worse PQ) over the Oppo."
tsammyc Posted June 1, 2007 Posted June 1, 2007 Hiya Pete, Its not the DVD loading time, but the long bootup delay before you even get to push the Open switch. I'd tolerate it as a compromise to getting REON output (hence XE-1), but not for the E-1 i.e., if I got a region free XE-1, i'd get rid of the Oppo, but not if I got a region-free E-1
yellowhandman Posted June 1, 2007 Posted June 1, 2007 Hiya Pete, Its not the DVD loading time, but the long bootup delay before you even get to push the Open switch. petetherock Posted June 1, 2007 Author Posted June 1, 2007 Yep Essentially it is a R4, R2 and now R3 region version of the XA2 (although it seems the firmware may not work across the board) Also it will play PAL I think. erm...so does XE1 have Reon?
desray Posted June 1, 2007 Posted June 1, 2007 I wonder issit even remotely possible to get Toshiba contacts to modify our XA2 to play all Regions... :P Wishful thinking....
petetherock Posted June 1, 2007 Author Posted June 1, 2007 I am not giving up hope, the Aussies are extremely hopeful if you read DTV forums :) But I didn't realised my XA2 cannot play PAL :( I wonder issit even remotely possible to get Toshiba contacts to modify our XA2 to play all Regions... :P Wishful thinking....
