Hi guys, been away fm this forum for months due to work/travel commitment.. kind of loss in the HD arena.. read thru the recent posting & not so much talks on HD players...

Can anyone recommend a basic HD player? The cheapest or most value for $$ model n preferably no need to use transformer. My setup is as follows:

PJ : 720P Epson TW600

AV preamp : Sony TA - E9000 ES (No HDMI or analog 5.1 input)

Thanks!

The cheapest blu-ray player is PS3 which retails for $799. But note that PS3 does not playback Blu-ray in 720p so you'll have to rely on the video processing in your TW600 to convert 1080i. (PS3 firmware v1.8 has addressed the 720p BR playback)

For HD-DVD, since you do not have a HDMI-capable amp, the cheapest option is a basic XBox360 set + HD-DVD addon, which should not set you back more than $700. Alternatively, you can wait for a short while for Toshiba HD-E1KE that has recently been registered with Spring Sg. I doubt the HD-E1 will cost more than $800.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Order online from US for a toshiba HD-XA2 for about US$600++.

Order online from ValueElectroncis for HD-A2 for US$299 good enough for now.  Comes with 5 free HD-DVD titles plus 5 more free ones from Toshiba directly.  Also includes free HDMI cable, T-Shirt and Double Boxing for added protection.

Some of us have ordered the HD-A2 from Amazon at a low low price of US$238.  Couple that with an Vpost shipping cost ranging from $88 to $112 plus GST.  You are probably looking at a cost of $500+- for it.  Do follow closely Amazon's website for more offers like this but you can also try out that ValueElectronics link i provided.  Quite a number of the folks here including myself bought from them last year for the 1st gen players.
