Those Combo Titles will allow the comparison to be made easily. I also have DVD versions of Batman/King Kong which allows faster A:B switches.
FookLai Posted May 17, 2007 Author Posted May 17, 2007 Doggie, thanks for the reply. My non HT friends will not appreciate AB test, hahaha..... They will only want to watch a movie, that's all, not really to show them the difference between SD and HD. Just let them to appreciate what HD can do to a movie ;) If it is a forumer coming to my house, then it will be more fun to have AB test between SD and HD, they can appreciate this much better ;D ;D ;D Fook Lai
Doggie Howser Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 IMHO King Kong DVD vs SD shows the best improvements. In fast moving scenes (aka being chased by dinos), the SD version lacks the detail of the HD version, especially in background (jungle/trees/leaves etc) I found more detail watching it on my 1080p projector than on my 720p projector. May be because of improved contrast. But the improvement was there.

Just let them to appreciate what HD can do to a movie ;) Then it will be more of which movies they have not seen. But my bet goes to: Batman Begins (great detail with awesome TrueHD soundtrack) and a great movie to boot. Some people dun like that for a movie called Batman, he doesn't really appear until 2/3rd into the show :) but to me, it is Nolan doing what he does best: weaving an intricate story.. that ties up everything and all the loose threads by the final shot. Best of all, he does it while being faithful to the Batman creation movie. Superman has good audio and video and being completely shot on digital definitely helps, though the story did meander a bit. Sad that Singer didn't do as great a job on it as his other XMen series. Matrix sounds like a great showcase, though I haven't seen it (since mine still hasn't shipped from Amazon!). Surprised the review is already out so fast.
muscular27 Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 Italian Job hd-dvd is not consistent in the pq. I'd rather not show that one. Quite alot of soft scenes. Dark scenes are not impressive too. Same goes for Superman Returns which is at least better but still not impressive. Your selection shld include at least an animated feature. For eg., Happy Feet (solid pq). Seeing your selection for your frens are mostly action shows, you'd miss such gem like DreamGirls. Very good pq too. Harry Porter hd-dvd (europe version) is also very good in terms of the pq. For wat you have, Tokyo Drift f&f is impressive for both pq & sq...Colors damn vibrant with good bass. And not slow at all like King Kong's first 1 hour. Mummy Returns is also very impressive in terms of pq.
petetherock Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 Hey Fooklai How about the Planet Earth series, v nice too Can I come too :)
Guest francis woo Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 FL, notice that you don't have the Starhub HD. A pity cos the pq of some of the Discovery Channel nature clips really showcase what HD is all about. Much better than HD movies IMO.
SiriuslyCold Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 Can I come too :) Pete you don't qualify as "non-HT" :P ;D
petetherock Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 Awwww I wanna.... My current HD setup is non-existant until I get a proper display, which may take months since I am waiting for the 1080p Pioneers / Panasonics Pete you don't qualify as "non-HT" :P ;D
FookLai Posted May 17, 2007 Author Posted May 17, 2007 Thanks for all the comments so far, keep the comments coming, the more the merrier ;D ;D ;D Hey Fooklai How about the Planet Earth series, v nice too Can I come too :) Bro, check your pm ;) Fook Lai

game_goondu Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 actually, most of the non HT ppl really do not care about HD or SD. to them most of them will be very happy with the DVD quality. some may even be happy with just VCD quality. most of them will just say "Wah... very clear, very detail, tok-kong" during the screening. but at the end of the day, they will just go back to their DVD and VCD. my suggestion to you, just play the movie that most of them will like... and i guarantee that most of them cannot differentiate between a good HD-DVD or a poor HD-DVD movie...
FookLai Posted May 18, 2007 Author Posted May 18, 2007 game_goondu, you know what? I somehow agree with you, they will go back to their dvds after the movie session, but this movie session is all about sharing what HD can do to a movie. Not asking them to convert to HD like me :) muscular, Amazon has my business thanks for your intro to the dreamgirls ;D I am not fan of anime, neither are my friends, we are all action freaks. doggie, it is hard to find a movie they never watch as they always catch the latest release in cinema. I think Batman Begins might be a good choice, tokyo drift a close second. Anyone watch world trade centre in HD? How is the picture quality and how is the content? Fook Lai
