Upconvert CRT RPTV possible?

I intend to get a DVDP with upscale ability over component, like the OPPO 970, to connect my 51" Panasonic CRT RPTV from the pre-HD era to 720p or 1080i.

 

Will it work? And most importantly, will it improve image quality?
