tsammyc Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 On SC's recommendation, I imported The Carpenters 1969-1981 Singles SACD produced by Richard Carpenter. It was actually quite difficult to find as Amazon doesn't carry it and I had to order it from Ebay. The surround track appears to be 5.1 and truly sounds super clear from my Oppo 981HD going via LPCM HDMI and the Yamaha 2700 set to "Pure Direct" model. I actually set it by accident because I thought pure direct mode was limited to two channel, no sub. However, when you are getting a 5.1 LPCM stream, it directs to the full 5.1 speakers... It was a new experience.

Doggie Howser Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 Btw, can the 2700 convert the 5.1 into 7.1? It can with my XA2 and PS3 over HDMI MPCM

tsammyc Posted April 24, 2007 Author Posted April 24, 2007 It can with my XA2 and PS3 over HDMI MPCM Yes, but not in Pure Direct. Switching between Pure Direct and PLIIX on the 5.1 stream, it was VERY clear that Pure Direct provides more detail than the processed output. If you can get this SACD, because it is so clear and almost perfectly mastered by one of the singers himself, you can really hear small differences. I actually found it on Amazon, but it doesn't turn up when you try to search for it directly. Googled it and found it. http://www.amazon.com/Singles-1969-1981-Carpenters/dp/B00067Z2VY
Doggie Howser Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 Have you tried the same thing with your PS3?

tsammyc Posted April 25, 2007 Author Posted April 25, 2007 Have you tried the same thing with your PS3? Never thought of using the PS3 as a SACD player, but why not. I'll do a shootout... in pure direct...
SiriuslyCold Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 for SACD, the PS3 HDMI LPCM output is 24/176 compared to Oppo's 24/88 right?
Darthfunk Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 be careful, 5.1 pure direct music can be very addictive. Pure direct for 2 channel is already very addictive talk about 5.1! :o
tsammyc Posted April 25, 2007 Author Posted April 25, 2007 for SACD, the PS3 HDMI LPCM output is 24/176 compared to Oppo's 24/88 right? Woooo! Now I can't wait to get home to try. The Oppo's is definitely 24/88 because that is what I see on the 2700. Lets see if the 2700 can really accept 6 channels of 24/176 without keeling over ;D
SiriuslyCold Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 it'd be interesting to find out if the2700 will process that if u press PLIIx
tsammyc Posted April 25, 2007 Author Posted April 25, 2007 Yes, it will process, but according to the manual anytime you engage processing, it will downsample to 48Khz. The Pure Direct mode is much clearer indicating that downsampling does affect the music perceptibly. Anyway, just tried the Carpenters SACD on the PS3 and can confirm that the Yammy 2700 is receiving 5.1 channels MPCM in 24/176.4 and it sounds great. Can't A/B with the Oppo because its raining and I can't keep the noise out. Interesting question. I know that the Marantz 8001 can receive 24/192 MPCM, but can it receive in both 2 channel and 5.1 channel? If someone with a 5.1 SACD has a PS3 connected to the 8001, can they take a look to see if SACD is being received at 24/176 on all six channels.

The Yamaha can accept 5.1 24/192 as well IIRC the PS3's Auto Detection correctly. It's just that 176.4 is a direct multiple of the sampling rate used in the SACD IIRC.
SiriuslyCold Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 tsammy want to borrow my Zephyr: Voices Unbound DVD-Audio? ;) I wish i had more AIX recordings
tsammyc Posted April 26, 2007 Author Posted April 26, 2007 Sounds interesting. Did you order it at that link or buy it in Singapore? I can get used ones only on Amazon and E-bay
SiriuslyCold Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 ordered it - through ebay IIRC. although now I'd order it through AIX themselves - you get a free demo DVDA as well
Garydrums Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 can I know how you check if your AVR can accept 24/192 in pure direct mode?
Doggie Howser Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 can I know how you check if your AVR can accept 24/192 in pure direct mode? Try Pure Direct Mode and use PS3 to do Auto Detect? Or Read the manual, if it is detailed enough. The Marantz one is.
tsammyc Posted April 26, 2007 Author Posted April 26, 2007 On the Yamaha 2700, while the 5.1 LPCM is coming in over HDMI, you switch to AMP mode and press SET MENU. Scroll down to SIGNAL INFO and press enter. You can then toggle between displaying the HDMI Audio Info and Video Info. For me, I checked this while connected to a PS3 playing a 5.1 SACD to see if I got a high bit rate. It read 24/176.4. I extrapolated that it could handle 24/192. Otherwise it would display 24/96 ro 24/48 I'm not sure how its done on a Pioneer or Marantz
SiriuslyCold Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 you need a DVDA with 24/192 on 2 channels - AFAIK there are not 24/192 multichannel DVDAs Sam if you are not a member of AVS register, then send email to AIX records when you are buying something http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=834710 If there are any AVS visitors that have not experienced our HD surround audio tracks, I would like to offer the following deal for our award-winning 29 track sampler disc. I usually provide this disc free with any $50 purchase...but I will gladly include it with any order of a single disc. This is only for AVS forum readers...but if you mention in the comments field the deal for the free High Resolution Audio Experience disc, I will send it along without any additional charge. Take a listen to the tracks [including the Demmy Award winner "Mosiac" by Laurence Juber] and let me know what you think. I'm also willing to refund your money, including the shipping costs, if you don't agree that the sampler contains some of the best recordings you've ever heard.
