I used to read that Universal, Paramounts and Warner Brother are the main studios which support HD-DVD as the HD format. Lately, I have seen Universal and Warner release their title in Blueray as well.

Is there any studio only support HD DVD format? If no, then it is very tough for HD DVD to remain in business since buying blueray player can play every discs.

Please correct me if I am wrong. I am in the middle to get a Toshiba player, but the new Samsung blueray player which come with HQV Reon looks very interesting as well. If getting Blueray can get all the contents then might give up the idea to get Toshiba player.

Just make sure the BR player will support the new BD PinP interactive stuff

Like tsammy says. You can get a PS3 and an A20 or A2 probably for less than the Samsung.

I wouldn't be surprised if its another year before a decent combo player comes out that is stable and does everything well. I'd be willing to pay up to $2k for such a beast to accompany my 1080p DLP or LCOS projector ;D

Hi Doggie Howser,

The Samsung BD-P1200 will support the BDJ, look at the technical spec below:

http://www.valueelectronics.com/avstc.htm

Terminals/Video: One  HDMI  (480i/480P/720P/1080i/1080P 24/60fps),  One  Composite video out,  One S-video out,  One RJ45 Ethernet Port

Terminals/Audio: One set Audio stereo out (L/R), One set (2CH/5.1CH) Analog Audio out,  One Digital Coaxial, One Optical AC3 Tos link

Other technical information: BD-J interactive enabled,  10-in-2  Memory Card Interface

BD-P1200 Features

With its HQV true 1080i to 1080p HD deinterlacing process, the BD-P1200 delivers the sharpest, most detailed HD images possible. There are no jagged edges with the per-pixel motion adaptive algorithm and a sophisitcated multi-directional diagonal filter. It doesn't get any better than this for viewing enjoyment.

FookLai, I suggest getting PS3 first to play Blu-Ray since it is cheaper than US, local warranty and excellent picture quality. Later, can sell it off to a gamer for not too much loss and buy a really good player. Perhaps combo players are good and reasonable by then. Might even be able to get value for money China players like Oppo.

tsammyc, thanks for the suggestion, I wish to buy PS3 but it has no real 720p output for my sharp. We all know it downconvert the blueray to 480p before sending out the signal. My pj couldnt handle 1080i very well(it will convert to 540p and upconvert to 720p) and couldnt accept 1080p.

Anyway, I guess the samsung is about 300 more than the PS3, still acceptable by me.

Yes, I remember if you uncheck the 1080i when connected to a 720p display, it goes down to 480p. Its a pity also that your PJ doesn't do 1080i properly.

Is LOTR and Matrix Trilogy coming as HD DVD or Blu-Ray?

LotR no news yet

Matrix is coming to HD first. BR no news yet. Maybe when they fix the interactive PinP capabilities.

My bad. After did some further reading in avs, the information shown that none of the Blueray player in current market support the Bluray profile 1.1 except for the possible upgrade of PS3. Although the samsung will do BDJ but it wont support Blueray PIP etc.

Actually, Universal is the solitary hold-out -- they only release stuff on HD DVD.  Warner whilst being an HD DVD supporter now releases on both, and they are also pushing a hybrid disc (not available yet) that contains all three formats (regular SD DVD, HD DVD and Blu-ray).

So basically, you can get everything on Blu-ray, EXCEPT stuff by Universal.  Which also includes a lot of TV shows on NBC, and the SciFi channel (e.g Battlestar Galactica). IIRC The Weinstein Company is also HD DVD-only, but so far they haven't got anything to release anyway.

As a DVD File editorial put it, Universal has the power to end the format war NOW, by releasing stuff on Blu-ray as well, which will basically kill off HD DVD since it will no longer be 'necessary'.  I'm not sure why Universal persists in supporting HD DVD only, though.
