Kong1624705737 Posted April 22, 2007 Posted April 22, 2007 Heard that Sony PS3 does not have coaxial digital output, is it true? If that is the case, may have problem connecting it to my Marantz SR8300, no HDMI support leh, dun feel like upgrading the amp at the moment.. :'(

Although PS3 has no coaxial digital out, there is an optical digtal out (aka toslink) which you can use to connect to SR8300.
Kong1624705737 Posted April 22, 2007 Author Posted April 22, 2007 Thanks.. :) but heard that the sound of optical output is not as good , is there noticeable difference actually? Does shops here sell optical connection cables? Think I rarely see them.. Does marantz sell any processor (pre only) that support HDMI? Price affordable?
petetherock Posted April 22, 2007 Posted April 22, 2007 Hi Right now Marantz does not have a pre And most processors are not cheap anyway (see a recent thread on pre-power) Some schools believe coaxial is better and vice versa.Best to audition. I am happy with my glass cable I got from USA. Actually optical cables are pretty pervasive. Cheers P Thanks.. :) but heard that the sound of optical output is not as good , is there noticeable difference actually? Does shops here sell optical connection cables? Think I rarely see them.. Kong, optical toslink cable are sold everywhere. Best Denki/HN/Courts all have. Just a matter of how much you willing to pay. cheers
Kong1624705737 Posted April 23, 2007 Author Posted April 23, 2007 OK, thanks guys! Went looking at Funan and Adelphi during lunch time today, yup, indeed those optical cables are much more common than I tot, think I never pay attention to them b4.. paiseh :-[ But wonder since coaxial are better and more common, why dont ps3 just provide a coaxial connection rather than optical.. ???
petetherock Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 Some people think coaxial is better, but there are many happy people using the glass optical cable, so I wouldn't knock optical as inferior. Audition and see, a glass cable won't set you back more than 60$
tsammyc Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 I think the main reason why people think coax is better is that to get optical, you have to go through yet another stage of processing i.e., to convert to light. Having said that, glass optical cables probably vary less in quality than interconnects. I've always found optical to be a bit brighter.
darkeststar Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 with regards to co-ax vs toslink optical, most of the Jap HT magazines seems to recommend co-ax over toslink, and in some cases, even over HDMI.
