SiriuslyCold Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Digital music portends the death of Hi-Fi By RON HARRIS, Associated Press Writer Tue Apr 17, 4:21 PM ET SAN FRANCISCO - Music lovers remember a familiar advertising image from the past: a man reclined in a chair, head back, blown away by music from his high-fidelity sound system. Like the Marlboro Man before him, Maxell's pitchman is now a relic. With their ability to store vast libraries of music in your pocket, sleek digital music players have replaced bulky home stereo systems as the music gear of choice. But the sound quality of digital audio files is noticeably inferior to that of compact discs and even vinyl. Are these the final days of hi-fi sound? (continue)
hifiluv Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 tis generation still got people play hifi, lps, tube amps, etc the next, looking at my children, i m not too sure about tat, :P
SiriuslyCold Posted April 18, 2007 Author Posted April 18, 2007 even if you leave them a legacy system (legacy = CD player) there might not be any CDs for them to buy...
hifiluv Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 even if you leave them a legacy system (legacy = CD player) there might not be any CDs for them to buy... ha ha.... so who will (or want to) inherit my LPs.... he he.... ;D
IwishIwasToneDeaf Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Not forgetting our next generation of Garang Gunis will deem all our stuff as useless trash and he would not even want it!
dannyhgt Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 I am intrigued by the recent postings on the new formats, True HD/True HD. Are these supposed to be better than the almost dead SACD and already dead DVD-Audio? Or purely video formats only? Are the days of having 2 separate systems for audio and video gone with the release of these new formats?
SiriuslyCold Posted April 18, 2007 Author Posted April 18, 2007 haha interesting point TrueHD is using the exact same lossless compression as DVD-Audio i.e. Meridian Lossless Packing, so a concert disc with TrueHD soundtrack will be = DVD-Audio sonically So - yes, eventually a "video" system will have better audio source than the average audiophile stereo system, unless the record companies revitalize SACD and DVD-A - which isn't likely. Gosh what are audiophiles going to do...? ;D
louco73 Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Gosh what are audiophiles going to do...? ;D Close their eyes and just listen to the audio ;)

SiriuslyCold Posted April 18, 2007 Author Posted April 18, 2007 Close their eyes and just listen to the audio ;) these guys - who are leery of playing music on a DVD player? hah! So that means it'd be like 24/96, 24/192 capable....depending on the source? absolutely - after decompressing the MLP you get PCM as whatever source it came from. DVD-A was 24/48 or 96 at best in multichannel, but I think that was due to limited space on a DVD disc (could do the calculations, but... malas lah) DTS HD Master Audio may be using a different compression algorithm, but they are lossless as well and for all intents and purposes, would be the same as the output from True HD. in computers it'd be the difference between WinZip and WinRAR (yes, zero) The old DD vs DTS argument would/should not arise again as the result would depend only on the mixing I think Does this mean that the audio portion of Bluray is actually DSD/SACD and that of HD-DVD is DVD-Audio? no .. theres no DSD involved (so much for Sony's abandoned baby) both movies on BD or HDDVD can come with either Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD Master Audio or, I imagine, both. (probably not enough space)
dannyhgt Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 both movies on BD or HDDVD can come with either Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD Master Audio or, I imagine, both. (probably not enough space) Eh... these are all new video formats leh. How did the implication of End of Hi-Fi Sound arise? And the question, What are audiophiles going to do? also don't make sens leh. We still have to go back to CD, XRCD, and vinyl. Unless you are implying they are going to release music on True HD or DTS HD? In this case, it will still be back to SACD and DVD-Audio dilemma right?
SiriuslyCold Posted April 18, 2007 Author Posted April 18, 2007 CD and XRCD are nowhere in terms of resolution compared to hirez PCM there's no news that they are ever going to release music on TrueHD, and after the stellar performance of SACD and DVD-A it is not likely. but this does mean that video sound source will always be better than regular CD or XRCD. previously the audio from DVD video was always in compressed (DD or DTS format) but with HD... its tons better plus there'll be none of , since every recording will be to a reference level
