Hi guys, I know this maybe a posting that someone have ask before.

I would like you guys opinions:-

Is the PS3 a good bluray player for movie at its price point of S$799?

I am thinking of investing one to partner with my Optoma H77 and DVDO VP-30 and MC12B. I am sure I would gain picture quality even if my pj is just 720p. What about audio?

Thanks.

PS3 is the best Blu Ray player you can buy in Singapore. It just happens to be cheap.

Downsides:

noisy

no 1080p24 HDMI output

But otherwise yeah, am happy with the PS3 as a BR player. In fact, I am not sure when I last used it to play games :P

I want to add that it is also a very beautiful machine cosmetically.  Adds to the decor of your living room!!

actually the PS3 has gained a lot of praise for NOT being noisy. from personal use, i find it no louder than a normal DVD player when operating.

With a HDMI-equipped AVR, 5.1 channel PCM is very nice !! After that, it will be very difficult

to go back to normal DD and DTS soundtracks...

Cheers,

I second that. And besides, with WIFI & the wireless controller there's minimum wires around. No fuss and no tripping while you are playing and the kid roaming around.

For video, its quite an improvement over DVD or upscaled SD content even though I am also using a 720p PJ. For audio, dun feel much diff since it is still downmixed DD/DTS for me. No new AVR to experience lossless audio on BR discs...

I am happy with the purchase and overall I feel its worth it.

It is noisier than my XBox 360 and my XA2. And boy! does it create a lot of hot air in the shelf.

no regrets using as a BD player. upscaling of SD-DVD not that great but SQ is soo darn good. U should try playing CD on this baby if u haven't, makes u wanna go thru your CD collection again.  ;D

It is not that quiet, but I am seated far away so the noise doesn't affect me. And yes it generate lotsa hot air, I was placing it horizontally on one of the deck initially, now I move it to the top of the shelf and place it vertically so the hot air goes straight up heh.

Thanks for all the feedbacks..... nice to know majority of you guys are satified with it..... I think I am going to get one on top of my XBOX360 (no HD DVD). Noise is not a problem coz I place my hifi stuff in a remote place at the maid room.

Few more questions.

#1  Is there any place selling Bluray movie in Singapore yet?

#2  How is region coding for PS3? Am I right it is same as Japan and USA or something? How many region now and which one is PS3? I know DVD got 6 and we are code 3, usa code 1 etc.

#3  Audio is only connected via optical? Does PS3 have 5.1 analog or 7.1 analog out? My MC12B can accept that then it will be still good as I don't want to upgrade my Lexicon again.

Thanks again......

#1 HMV orchard selling both BR & HDDVD. BR price range from $51 onwards. Still cheaper to get from amazon if you can wait for shipping time.

#2 Region coding for BR & DVD is different. The local PS3 set is Region 3 for DVD and Region A for BR. US & Japan is also in Region A. For details look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu_ray#Region_codes.

#3 Audio can also be routed thru HDMI. If I am not wrong, all the new HD Audio formats can only be decoded by the player and pump thru HDMI (due to bandwidth, copyright?). Thru optical, it will be downmixed to DD/DTS.

I second that but did not compare with 360 so dont know who is the king  ;D PS3 is quiet at standby mode. Start to play a disc also quiet .But get noiser when the fan really operating . I need to DIY a board to cover the particular shelf for PS3 to reduce the noise . My set is HK set .

If I understand correctly, the US PS3 will enable me to play Code 1 DVD whereas the local one cannot.  What are the benefits and disadvantages if I buy a US PS3 vs a local PS3?  (Besides having to use a transformer?) Thanks.

No worry, I have no maid. I converted the maid room to a hifi room where I store all the equipments and DVD's, CD's.......

You only see my plasma, PJ and speakers.... no hifi's , players, amp etc.....

when i bought my local PS3, the US PS3 that local shops were selling was $400 more. even if you can get one from the US, it will still be more expensive than a local PS3.

so, although it would definitely be more convenient to be able to use the PS3 as a R1 DVD player as well, for the price difference, you can almost buy a local PS3 and a Denon 1930, that will play DVDs much better than the PS3. Reviews generally say that PS3's DVD playback is nothing special.

Then how the remote controls work? Everytime you change disc got to go in and out of the room? Quite troublesome leh  :)

Got IR repeaters/blasters?

How many times you need to change disc per movie? :P

now a US PS3 cost 900 - 1000 and available in SIngapore.

Obvious advantages are the ability to play US PS2 games and play R1 dvd movies.

:)

even if the price difference is only $100-200, i just don't think it's worth it.

1) backward compatibility with US PS2 games may protect your existing investment in PS2 games, but how important is that when the PS3 is so much better? most major PS-platform games will see PS3 versions eventually (e.g Gran Turismo, GTA, sports games), so eventually you'll be playing the new HD versions anyway.

2) PS3 is a really ordinary DVD player and has no upscaling capability whatsoever with SD DVDs. unless picture quality is completely unimportant, you might as well spend the difference in price on an upscaling DVD player, like the Denon 1930 (less than $500). the idea of having one less box, by using the PS3 as a DVD player, is attractive, but not enough. besides, even if it can play your R1 DVDs, most people have at least a few R2 or R3 DVDs in their collection, and those wouldn't be able to play.

Another thing to take note if u going to buy a USA PS3 set, theres no local warranty.

All usa, jap, asia ps3 do not need any step down transformer.

I have tried playing my ps2 games FFX on my ps3,the pic quality is dame bad compare to my ps2 set.So if u got a ps2 set keep it for yr ps2 games.

Most Hk & China dvd are "All Code" region, there is no problem for me to play them on my ps3.

Never notice any noise from my ps3,may be its covered by the wonderful surround sound while playing games n movie.Yes the hot air blows out from the system was very strong,i make use of it to maintain my cup of hot coco heehee........ ;D

Mine is a local ps3 set, using hdmi for my panny 42" plasma, pic quality is perfect for me.Using optical for my old receiver, sound quality still acceptable, waiting

for upgrade to a 1.3 hdmi receiver,ps3 can output 1.3 hdmi sound.
