yellowhandman Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 finally received my first few blu-ray titles from amazon (casino royale, kingdom of heaven, superman returns, rocky balboa)... wow. simply...wow. i don't think i'm going to buy another standard dvd ever again. i'll just have to live without universal/nbc titles. there's no point buying dvds when i know eventually i'll end up on blu-ray...and pretty much everything significant is nowadays released on blu-ray at the same time as dvd, with back catalogue stuff lined up already.
weibchen Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 thats nice to hear, can you post some pics so that we can ogle at it?
yellowhandman Posted April 14, 2007 Author Posted April 14, 2007 thats nice to hear, can you post some pics so that we can ogle at it? errr...how? i'm playing them on a ps3... i guess i could use my handphone to take photos, but i don't think that would do justice to the quality... ;D ;D ;D
htfreak Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 Ahhh.. another convert to the dark side of High Definition. However, don't write off the HD-DVD format as you will be missing out on what it has to offer. Embrace both formats and complete your HD entertainment.

You connect to LCD or Plasma ? Is your LCD HD Ready or Full HD ? If Plasma , what is the resolution ?
yellowhandman Posted April 14, 2007 Author Posted April 14, 2007 You connect to LCD or Plasma ? Is your LCD HD Ready or Full HD ? If Plasma , what is the resolution ? connected to plasma via component...output from PS3 is 1080i. my old panny 1024x768 plasma is a bit strange...can handle 1080i, but not 720p (which some people feel is better than 1080i).
Guest francis woo Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 Well, I belong to those who believe that 1080i is better than 720p. The more pixel count the better IMO.

SiriuslyCold Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 assuming they do better than the LG product...
darthmax Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 connected to plasma via component...output from PS3 is 1080i. my old panny 1024x768 plasma is a bit strange...can handle 1080i, but not 720p (which some people feel is better than 1080i). Wait till you upgrade to full HD panel 50" and above, you will see things even more clearly... ;D

yellowhandman Posted April 15, 2007 Author Posted April 15, 2007 btw i notice that the sound also seems to be much better on blu-ray, even though i'm using the same dolby digital that's found on dvd, being processed by my denon 2807. but the surround just seems more open and with a wider soundstage. bass also tighter. is it because the DD audio on blu-ray is less compressed?
tsammyc Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 Should be the same. Casino Royale has a lossless 5.1 PCM track so if your receiver supports LPCM 5.1 over HDMI, be prepared to be blown away again.
yellowhandman Posted April 15, 2007 Author Posted April 15, 2007 i guess the sound quality difference with DD could be because the PS3 is doing a better job reading the data than my rudimentary DVD player. tried setting up HDMI for audio out, but had some problems configuring my amp. will try again.

Casino Royale has a lossless 5.1 PCM track so if your receiver supports LPCM 5.1 over HDMI, be prepared to be blown away again. i was trying to setup my receiver (denon 2807) to receive LPCM 5.1 over HDMI, but nothing seems to be coming out of my PS3. i set the PS3 to output PCM audio from blu-rays over HDMI, and also did the settings on my denon. but nothing came out. is it because the denon is only HDMI 1.1? or because i have nothing connected to the HDMI output of the denon (since my TV is still connected via component).
tsammyc Posted April 15, 2007 Posted April 15, 2007 I doubt the 2807 can convert HDMI into component. Perhaps you have both HDMI and component hooked up at the same time. HDMI is quite finicky about talking to other devices (HDCP etc), so I suggest that if you have both hooked up, take out the component and toslink and just hook up HDMI striaight through and you should get the lossless. My Yamaha 2700 is HDMI 1.2 and my PS3 works fine through it, outputting lossless audio.

tsammyc Posted April 16, 2007 Posted April 16, 2007 obviously hooking up just the HDMI is not an option, unless i don't mind watching movies without pictures! ;D I guess you don't have an HDMI input on your display?

Well, never say never, there might be obscure or cult-following-only catalogue stuff that never gets onto hi def, leaving standard DVD as the only format it's on. But I take your point, for new stuff there's no point getting SDVD if a hi def alternative is already available, or will be available shortly thereafter. Big kicker for no Universal/NBC -- Battlestar Galactica and Heroes...
Kopi Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 Well..this seems to be really a discovery topic. I am connecting my PS3 to my 720p projector via HDMI for video. Connecting my PS3 to my Rotel processor(no hdmi) via optical cable for Audio. Trial and error the following : 1. Sound Setting : Bitstream. Blu ray disc language selection: English DTS 5.1 Outcome - this is the worst setup for sound perspective. Worst transfer rate too. With muffle sound and poor bass and clarity. 2. Sound setting : Bitstream. Blu ray disc language selection : English Uncompress LCM5.1 Outcome - slightly better. But still lack depth. I suppose in this case, it is actually 2.1 channel PCM going into optical cable instead of 5.1. 3. Sound setting : LPCM. Blu ray Disc language selection : English DTS 5.1 Outcome - slightly better than 2. More open. Not sure why. 4. Sound setting : LPCM Blu ray Disc language selection : English uncompress 5.1 LPCM Outcome - this is the best set up so far ...guess my processor Dolby Logic is doing a good job 5. Sound setting : LPCM Blu ray Disc language selection : English uncompress 5.1 LPCM and Sound processor setup - 2-channel PCM. Outcome - this is not bad. Good clarity and depth. Too directional from 2-channel front speaker. So, it seems that with optical cable as an audio connection option, the best is still to go LPCM and uncompress...not sure why a 2-ch lossless audio transmitted over cable can be better than DVD quality 5.1 output. Those with a sound receiver who can get LPCM 5.1 lossless via HDMI, is this 50% better that my setup. Not willing to spend $ for temporary solution while waiting for a HDMI-ready v1.3 receiver.
SiriuslyCold Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 Kopi do you mind if i ask - is the system calibrated/ recalibrated after installing the PS3?
Kopi Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Nope.. i did not go back to my receiver to fine-tune the setup. Did not do "tonal setup" or "speaker setup" again since my Rotel receiver cannot saved multiple customised set-up for different source inputs. Any advice here will help.
lustforlife Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 what is the definitive blu-ray disc title that I should buy to see the magic of HD? I am planning to buy a US PS3 as the player. Thanks!
