cavemanng Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 Guys I am looking for a compact set of 5.1 speakers for my A/V receiver Yamaha RV440. I wonder whether there is any recommendation for a budget of $500 - 600. Is the Tannoy EFX5.1 good? What is the price like?
JT Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 How about this: Mission M3c1 (center - satin silver) Mission M70 (front - satin silver) Yamaha flat speaker (rear - silver) Yamaha YST-SW320 subwoofer @ 600sgd (negotiable).
cavemanng Posted April 9, 2007 Author Posted April 9, 2007 Hi Are they new? I am wondering whether a speaker with higher impedance is better as it is easier to drive?
cavemanng Posted April 9, 2007 Author Posted April 9, 2007 Sorry, where is a good place to hunt for mission speakers?
JT Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 Sorry, where is a good place to hunt for mission speakers? Mission set you can get at KEC, Adelphi. Now got M3c1 and M30 models only. Each about 300sgd. Im selling this set I posted.
cavemanng Posted April 9, 2007 Author Posted April 9, 2007 Hi Thanks for the info. I wonder whether the mission cube is good as compare to your recommendation? any idea what is the price like?
JT Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 Hi Thanks for the info. I wonder whether the mission cube is good as compare to your recommendation? any idea what is the price like? Mission mcube is around 2k. check the review for m70: http://202.186.86.35/audio/story.asp?file=/2002/2/7/audiofile/07mission&sec=audiofile I have paired this with yammy 440 before and its really good esp for movies.
cavemanng Posted April 10, 2007 Author Posted April 10, 2007 Hi I dont really like bookshelf. I wonder is there any recommendation based on a set of ready made 5.1?
petetherock Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 Hi bro Maybe giving more info will help bros here give you info. Room size? You don't want bookshelf speakers, so floorstanders? Or "lifestyle sizes minis? A PSB intro 5.1 sells for $6xx at Merdeka - SLS Mission M30i X 4 plus centre is not bad. Try Alpha Audio and KEC at Adelphi for ideas. Bear in mind your $600 budget for an entire 5.1 system doesn't give you that many choices. Good luck bro. Hi I dont really like bookshelf. I wonder is there any recommendation based on a set of ready made 5.1?
cavemanng Posted April 10, 2007 Author Posted April 10, 2007 Hi I intend to use it for my living room. In general, I only watch movies. I prefer mini series. I can stretch my budget to $800 or $1k if needed. I am also considering Jama A102 series. Seems to be small, compact and pricewise, it is reasonable. I wonder whether it is good
petetherock Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 Size matters, the sound from a small centre will sound - small May I suggest auditioning some of these mini lifestyle sized setups first, rather than wait for opinions? That way you get an idea of what they can do, then you se if you stil want that kind of sound. Paradigm Atom, JBL control series and Monitor Audio Radius are other choices to consider Audition a few first for an idea and you can find out more prices and post them here.
cavemanng Posted April 10, 2007 Author Posted April 10, 2007 Hi So where is a good place to try out? does KEC carry all the brands u mention?
SiriuslyCold Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 KEC carries some brands of speakers. For Paradigm you have to go to Asia Sound equipment - same building, level 4. I can vouch for the Atoms :)
blackburn Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 http://www.xtremeplace.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=44430.0
petetherock Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 I think this one is out of the poster's budget :) http://www.xtremeplace.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=44430.0
SiriuslyCold Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 the Q Acoustics (I keep getting them confused with QSound) 1010 - the bookshelf speaker - looks really solid. its $300 a pair though
cavemanng Posted April 10, 2007 Author Posted April 10, 2007 Hi The Q acoustic 1010 looks great! I wonder KEC carries them? I gg down to take a look tomorrow. Today I tested the sound of Jamo A102. Sound fine to me. Looking thru a few more sets before I make my decision. Guys, if u have anything more compact than the Q acoustic 1010, pls let me know. Thanks for all the information! Cheers!
blackburn Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 if you notice the quality of the binding posts for the q-acoustics speakers, the contoured cabinet, etc, $300 a pair seems quite ok for a small room. but most importantly i wonder how do they sound ?
cavemanng Posted April 10, 2007 Author Posted April 10, 2007 I am wondering whether it is possible to get reasonable good satellite speakers (5pcs) + 1 center with a budget of $800 - 1000.
petetherock Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 Someone reviewed the Q: http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=506905 If you find that your budget is too restrictive (lifestyle ones costs more and sound worse usually, get the front 3 first plus a sub, then upgrade later, rather than settle for something you don't like) P
SiriuslyCold Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 pete good suggestion. I'd also go as far as getting the front 3 and a cheap pair of whatever just for surround effect - you can find cheap pairs of satellite speakers at Yahoo or eBay sg auctions
blackburn Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 or you can wait for the sharp bd-mpc70 htib featuring a blu-ray player with a kef ht3005 lookalike subwoofer ;D http://www.cinenow.com/uk/news-2298.html
SiriuslyCold Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 the sub is made by KEF 105 ten thousand yen = 1,050,000 = S$13,373.30 (:o !) actually the talboys look like Missions, the sats look like Gallos and of course the sub is made by Kef. mish mash and definitely not for 13K
cavemanng Posted April 13, 2007 Author Posted April 13, 2007 Hi guys Thanks for all the valuable information. I have manage to get my 5.1 speakers after listening to a few systems so I will share some of my listening experience: - 1) Jamo A102 Sound reasonable ok if u just play home theatre. However, I tested this side by side with Dtech Cinema Pro60 at KEC. Notice the major difference in terms of music listening. 2) Q acoustic 1010 Sound good in home theatre and music but nothing to compare with in the same shop. However too bulky for my liking. Out of the 4 system i tried, this has the most bulky design. 3) Definitive technology Cinema Pro60 Sounds good. Definately worth buying but at $1200, it is over my budget. For those who are keen, you can also wait for the Cinema Pro600 which is expected to be available to distributor in July 07 according to Definitive tech in US. 4) Paradigm Cinema90 I try this out at Asia Sound. Basically, it sound quite nice, the size and the budget just suit me. In the end, got this unit. Sorry, I am still considered a novice thus cant really provide a lot of listening experience. Hope the above info is useful for newcomers. Lastly, a big thanks to everyone who provide all the valuable suggestions.
